Chapter 4

We reached the hotel, and we were shown to our table. We were brought for a bottle of wine. An old bottle from the 17th century. A chateau de ville. “Excellent choice,” I complimented. I loved wine dearly. “I only know of a few bottles. I am not much of a wine drinker.” “I absolutely adore them. Wine is just a soulful drink,” I say with a smile. He ordered a glass of whiskey for himself. “I hope you don’t mind but I had asked the chef to prepare something before we arrived.” “Not at all,” I picked up my glass and savored the taste of the wine. “Tell me about yourself Carlie,” Mateo said as he leaned in closer to me. “Well, I’m an only child. My parents passed when I was still a child and now, I live with a guardian. I work as an office worker in the building opposite your law firm. But you already know this since you watch me all the time,” I joked at the end, and he laughed. “you’ve been inquiring about me?” he asked. The meal was placed in front of us as I answered him, “I hear things here and there.” I shrugged my shoulders and took a taste of the food. “it’s delicious.” “I’m glad you like it.” “What about you Mateo?” I asked him. “I have an older brother.” That was all he said. Nothing else. “that’s it?” I was surprised. “that’s just how my life is. Me and my brother. Just the two of us. You already know about my law firm.” He changed the topic away from family after that and talked about something else. I found out that we both liked jazz. He hated winter and loved summer while I was the opposite. He enjoyed travelling as much as possible, he wanted to discover new lands. I on the other hand was satisfied at one place as long as I was happy. We both like different things but don’t opposites attract? After dinner, we drove to the park and walked around. Talking and laughing in the chilly air. Our breaths leaving white smoke in the air as we laughed together. It was a serenity I had never experienced before. I don’t think I had ever been this happy. As we walked, we passed a mime. I loved mimes. “May I join you?” I asked the mime. He nodded his head and I knocked on a door. He opened the door and his eyes widened in surprise. I did a low curtsy and got in after he bowed. He mimed a bouquet of flowers and I received them kindly. I blew a kiss towards him, and he jumped up to catch it. A larger crowd gathered around to watch our performance. I mimed that I was trapped in a box. I held my hand above my face and brought it down with a sad look on my face. He did the same thing. Then his face glowed up as if he had an idea. He raised up his hand up before bending down. Rolling up his sleeves he picked up a mallet. I clapped my hands in joy. He hit the box thrice and then it shattered. Happily, I went to him. he took my hand and we bowed to the crowd. They all clapped and put money in his hat. I could feel Mateo’s gaze on me the entire time. He also put something for him in his hat. “Thank you miss,” he said once the crowd had dispersed. “My pleasure.” He placed a kiss on the back of my hand and left with his money. “You were pretty good up there,” Mateo compliment me as we carried on with our walk. “You think so?” I stopped and looked at him. “I used to mime in high school theater. I loved it; it was wonderful.” “You were wonderful Carlie.” We looked at each other and it was like he wanted to hold me in his arms but couldn’t bring himself to. I wanted to kiss the man in front of me. I wanted to taste him. Was it selfish of me to want to? Was selfish of me to want this man even if it will only be for a second? He was the first man I had agreed to spend my time with like this. He is the only man who can make me lose control of myself. And because of that, anything that I do with him wouldn’t last. But would I die not knowing how this handsome man in front of me tasted? Deciding for once in my life to take a risk, a risk that could turn out horribly wrong, I kissed him. Mateo’s POV I felt her cold hands on my face before she connected her lips with mine. I had to pull away or I would hurt her. I would burn her, but I didn’t move back. I was a selfish bastard who wanted what he couldn’t have. Pressing her back against the wall, I kissed her fiercely. My hot breath met her cold one and I pulled away from her. She had the same look at me on her face. Confusion. “you’re like me,” she stated. “What do you mean like you?” she looked around before turning to the wall and touched it. It began to freeze. It was like ice had appeared there in a second. “Gifted. Touch the wall Mateo,” she coaxed me into doing as she asked. I touched it and the ice thawed. I glanced at her face once more. We were the opposite of each other. She was the ice to my fire. The only one who could handle these burning flames that was brimming inside me. “that’s why nothing happened when I kissed you. I thought I would freeze you to…” I kissed her again shutting her up as I caressed her cold face. I could finally hold something while feeling so passionate and not burn it up. My hands trailed down her body teasing her. She tasted even better than I imagined. She was meant for me. The only one who could cool this fire within me. I looked at her, she seemed glad that she couldn’t hurt me. I welcomed the feeling of her cold hands on my face. That was the first time I’ve ever felt the cold at all, and I loved it. “This is the first time I’ve ever felt heat. Its…soothing,” she said. “I never thought that there were others like me. Another who could tame my fire,” I said softly to her. It was the truth. She could tame my fire. Now that I had her I don’t think I’d ever want her gone from my life. The truth elapsed, daunting and haunting He was the fire, and she was the ice. Happily, ever after? It’s what most would assume but the world simply doesn’t work like that. They were happy only for the short time they had managed to share in each other’s arms. They both learnt how their emotions work. They learnt about love, sadness all the emotions that they were afraid of. They were able to experience them with each other. The emotions that yearn within each of their souls, but it was only for a moment. And she learnt the meaning of pain when he faded away from her. All because his emotions tapped into the fire within. Was he not strong enough to control it? Was that why he disappeared without a trace? She couldn’t understand it. He couldn’t control his gift and it ended him. That’s what she believed. It was the only thing she could believe. Gordon told her that it wasn’t the case, but her pain blinded her. Her emotions were taking control of her in a way she even feared herself. Emotions were the enemy. Her gift was an enemy to her. Just like she thought when she was a child. It was a curse. What would happen if she tapped into the ice within? Only a part of it, would she disappear like he did? Would she turn into a block of ice? Not wanting to know she decided to close herself off from the world. Carlie told Gordon to make her a home in the earth. A place where she would bring her heart to rest in a deep sleep until she felt ready. Not wanting to go against her wished, he built her a casket and she froze her body. The pain in her heart made the truth in her mind to be hidden. She never got her answers on what happened to him. No one did. Not until the time when she decided she had had enough of the darkness that engulfed her.
