CHAPTER 13 — A Bond She Never Asked For

781 Words
Mirabel stood frozen, Lucian’s words echoing in her skull like a distant thunder she couldn’t escape. Mate. Not friend. Not ally. Not savior. Mate. Her breath staggered out of her chest as she shook her head slowly. “No,” she whispered. “No, that’s impossible. I didn’t choose this. I didn’t even know you existed.” Lucian’s gaze didn’t waver. “True mates are not chosen,” he said, voice rich with something ancient. “They are destined.” Mirabel stepped back from him, the cold dampness of the fog pressing against her skin. “Destiny?” she laughed shakily. “My destiny was to be betrayed, poisoned, thrown away like trash? You expect me to believe this is some grand plan?” For the first time, Lucian’s expression softened—just a hint, like a crack in stone. “No,” he said. “Those things happened because humans can be cruel. Your destiny began the moment you survived what should have killed you.” Mirabel felt a shiver crawl up her spine. “Explain,” she demanded. Lucian lifted his hand slightly—not to touch her, but to gesture toward her, like presenting evidence. “You should not be standing,” he said. “That poison they forced into you was enough to stop your heart. It did stop your heart.” His voice grew quieter. “But your soul reached out. To me. And I answered the call of a dying mate.” Mirabel swallowed hard. “I didn’t call anyone.” “You didn’t need to,” Lucian replied. “The bond did.” A flicker of anger pulsed through her chest. She didn’t want a bond. She didn’t want fate. All she wanted was her own life back—the one Esther and Kelvin had ripped from her. “You saved me,” she said. “Fine. I’m grateful. But you don’t own me.” Lucian’s eyes glinted with something unreadable. “I never claimed ownership. I claimed connection.” “I don’t want it,” she hissed. The air shifted sharply. Lucian stiffened—not offended, but… wounded? His jaw tightened, and for the first time his control cracked. “You don’t know what you’re rejecting,” he said quietly. “The mate bond is rare. Sacred. Powerful enough to tie two souls beyond death. Rejecting it is—” “Your problem, not mine.” Silence fell. Thick. Heavy. The fog wrapped around them like a curtain. Then Lucian inhaled slowly, visibly reining himself back in. “Very well,” he said. “If rejection is what you desire, I will not force anything on you.” Mirabel blinked. She hadn’t expected him to yield so easily. “But understand this,” Lucian continued. “Bond or not, danger surrounds you now. You are changing. Evolving. Your body is no longer fully human.” Her stomach dropped. “What do you mean?” “You will feel it soon,” he said. “Your senses sharpening. Your emotions intensifying. Your instincts… shifting. You are between worlds, Mirabel. And the humans who betrayed you will not be the greatest threat you face.” “What is?” Lucian turned his head slightly, listening to something she couldn’t hear. His eyes darkened. “News travels fast in my world,” he murmured. “And some have already sensed your awakening. Power like yours… attracts attention.” Mirabel felt cold fear grip her. “Who’s coming?” she whispered. Lucian’s expression hardened like iron. “Rogues. Hunters. And those who want what you could become.” Her heartbeat quickened. “And what exactly is that?” Lucian met her gaze—and this time, there was no softness. No mystery. Only truth. “A hybrid,” he said. “A being blessed by the moon and reborn in blood. Something rare. Something powerful. Something many would kill to possess… or destroy.” Mirabel stepped back as the weight of his words crushed the air from her lungs. “No,” she whispered. “No, this can’t be real…” Lucian moved closer—not touching her, but grounding her with his presence. “Whether you believe it or not,” he said, “this is your reality now. And I will protect you… bond or no bond.” Mirabel stared at him, her world twisted beyond recognition. But before she could speak, a distant howl echoed across the night. Not a dog. Not a wolf. Something darker. Closer. Searching. Lucian’s eyes snapped toward the sound. “They’ve found you,” he said. And for the first time since her rebirth, Mirabel felt real fear. ---
