Chapter Five LOS ANGELES—DAPHNE’S APARTMENT Daphne wakened the following morning with a song in her heart. She felt a bit giddy as she accomplished her morning ablutions and slipped on a thong and pants that emphasized her long legs. She stood before her mirror and slipped a light sweater over her unsupported breasts. As she brushed out her red tresses, Max bumped her leg and mewed softly. “Gimme a sec, Max,” she said as she tossed her hair over her shoulder. “You cut a fine figure, Girl,” she said to the mirror image as she stepped into the kitchenette to feed Max. “Yessir, Braxton Thorpe,” she said to no one in particular as she measured cat food onto a saucer, “too bad you’re not flesh-and-bone. I’d teach you a thing or two.” She winked at Max and left for the Lab humming to herself.
