Chapter Three Matilda found it difficult to fall asleep in the unfamiliar environment, as the early sun shone through the see-through curtains, casting a soft light in her room. She was still shaken from the previous night's events, her heart racing after encountering the intruder. Staring at the ceiling, she pondered how much longer she could conceal her real identity. She couldn't rid herself of the feeling that the danger was still present, and that the secret she held was on the brink of intersecting with her present situation. The sound of footsteps near her door caused her to quickly sit up, her heart racing. The door opened and Theo came out, with a look that showed both confidence and curiosity. His dark hair fell over his forehead as he leaned casually against the door frame, arms folded across his chest. "He pointed out that your ongoing presence was emphasized by his sarcastic comment." I almost thought you would have left already. Matilda clenched her jaw, growing increasingly unsettled by the frustration he caused. "Where can I go?" Theo entered and shut the door after him. I am not sure. Could it be a shelter? I don't understand why you would choose to remain in this place. Taken aback by her own courage, she responded, "Perhaps I'm not the one desiring to be present." "You don't know about my life." "I have knowledge," he responded, a sly smile beginning to form on his face. "You are an enigma wrapped in a puzzle, and eventually you will be unraveled." His words lingered in the atmosphere, filled with significant meanings. Matilda desired to respond, to insist he stay away, but she understood deep inside that he was correct. She concealed herself, avoiding her past and the disorder it caused. However, by remaining here, she put everyone in this house at risk of the looming danger. She started to speak, her voice shaking a bit. "You have to realize that I didn't request this." Theo arched an eyebrow, his face showing skepticism. "So, what was your question?" In my opinion, you're in a difficult situation and it will only get more complicated. His words carried a heavy weight on her. He only knew half of the story. The risk wasn't solely hers alone, but it would in the end endanger all those nearby. She had to devise a strategy, but the anxiety of uncertainty consumed her. "What is the true reason for your presence here?" Theo inquired, his tone changing. "What are you trying to escape from?" Matilda paused, the truth lingering just out of her grasp. She was unable to disclose all details to him at the moment. "I simply... I have no other place to go." I believed I would be protected in this place. Theo's face briefly showed a softer look before returning to its initial hardened state. Is it secure? Is this house the one? Do you have any clue about the real situation? His words sent a shiver down her spine. There was a hidden aspect to this family, to Thomas's business transactions, and to the lingering shadow that had troubled her for years. However, given that the intruder was still around, her survival instinct was triggered, and she realized she needed to defend herself. As time went by, Matilda stayed indoors, slowly becoming an integral part of Thomas's daily routine. He cared for her with compassion, making sure she had all the necessary resources for her healing. Still, as time went on, the tension between Theo and Matilda intensified, with both being stubborn and cautious around each other. While cooking dinner in the large kitchen one evening, she sensed Theo standing behind her. With his arms folded, he stood by the doorway, gazing at her with such intensity that it sent shivers down her spine. He inquired with a blend of amusement and irritation, "What do you believe you are up to?" "Preparing food," she answered abruptly. "What is the appearance of it?" Sure. "Definitely." An impoverished girl without a place to live quickly rises to become a skilled chef. He moved away from the structure and advanced. “What is the true reason for your presence?” Matilda experienced a rapid beating in her heart. "Do you believe that I am not telling the truth?" I've shared all the information with you that I am able to. "Anything you are able to," he repeated, speaking softly. "Which is very little." I believe you are keeping a secret, and I plan to uncover it. A sharp knock echoed through the house before she had a chance to respond. Startled, Matilda leaped while Theo's playful expression quickly turned serious as his eyes darted towards the door. He ordered to stay in that place and walked confidently towards the entrance. Matilda felt her heart racing as she saw him walking away. She found herself in a risky situation and the last thing she wanted was additional disorder. The company is implementing new strategies to improve its performance and remain competitive in the market. Thomas stood outside with two of his men, their serious expressions showing as they quietly talked about something. Matilda could feel the tension in the air, causing her stomach to twist with unease. She pressed her back against the wall, attempting to overhear fragments of their discussion. "…discovered a path that goes towards the abandoned warehouse," one of the men whispered quietly. "It is evident that they are continuing to pursue her." Thomas had a tense expression on his face, showing signs of worry. "We must ensure they don't reach her." She is unaware of the importance of the situation. Matilda's breathing caught as she fully grasped the weight of their conversation. The discussion revolved around her - the menacing threats and the peril she faced. She was already aware of her lack of safety, but the straightforward confirmation sent a chill down her back. "What happens if we can't locate him?" Theo's voice cut through her mind. Her attention returned to him as he moved nearer, a hint of worry seeping through his confidence. "So, what's next?" OR "And what follows?" Thomas responded with confidence that they would locate him. He won't vanish suddenly. He desires her, but I will not allow it. Matilda felt her heartbeat quicken. What were they prepared to do in order to defend her? She was an unwelcome challenge, a responsibility they didn't choose, but they were ready to protect her well-being. However, taking a chance on her was not justifiable. Not for them. At that moment, the front door made a creaking noise as it opened, revealing a tall man who exuded confidence and a serious expression. He was smartly dressed, immediately grabbing everyone's attention with his commanding presence. "Thomas," he spoke with a smooth tone tinged with urgency. We must have a conversation. "It's more severe than we anticipated." Matilda sensed the tension in the room increase, her instincts suddenly alert. The woman was unsure of the man's identity, but his urgent tone caused concern. Thomas nodded, his face becoming more rigid. "I will arrive shortly." Matilda's thoughts raced when she discovered that the threat was actually much nearer than she had anticipated. She had to comprehend the situation. Her safety and future were on the line; this was her life in jeopardy. "Urgency clawed at her throat as she whispered, "Theo." I require information regarding the current situation. However, Theo's gaze was fixed on his father, a blend of worry and dread filling his expression. "We have to leave this place," he finally stated, with a hint of desperation in his voice. "I'm unsure how much longer we can prevent this from escalating beyond our control." Matilda experienced a surge of nervousness when she considered departing from the place that had provided her with protection. However, she comprehended the potential consequences. The situation was larger than her, and if she didn't confront it, she would lose everything. She inhaled deeply, gathering the bravery she didn't realize she possessed. "She declared that she would not flee, maintaining a calm tone," "I refuse to be defeated without putting up a fight." Theo was surprised as her eyes widened, and she noticed a glimpse of respect for the first time. He mentioned that you appear more courageous than you actually seem, with a touch of admiration coming through his sarcasm. "Perhaps just overly adamant," she answered, sensing the gravity of her choice sinking in. She needed to face whatever was approaching her. She was no longer fighting only for herself; she was fighting for Thomas, for Theo, and for the life she wished to regain. With the tension in the room escalating, she realized they were all united in the situation, regardless of their feelings.
