Chapter Nine: Inside His Room

986 Words
ANGEL’S POV The door closed behind me softly. But it sounded loud in my head, I stood there for a moment, not moving, not speaking. Just there. The room felt different, too quiet, too still. His scent filled the air instantly. Stronger than before. It wrapped around me before I could prepare for it. My chest tightened. Mate… I swallowed hard. “Stop,” I whispered, "It didn't”. I stayed close to the door, my fingers lightly touching the handle like I might open it again. Like I might leave. But I didn’t. Because I knew I couldn’t. He walked further into the room like none of this affected him. Like I wasn’t standing there, trying to breathe, trying not to fall apart. I watched him for a second. Then I looked away. I didn’t want him to see anything on my face. Not confusion, not fear, not this. “Close it properly.” His voice broke through. Low and Calm. I turned and locked the door. The click echoed. And just like that it felt more real. I slowly stepped away from the door. My heels are quiet against the floor now. Careful steps. I didn’t know where to stand, so I stopped near the edge of the room. Not too close, not too far.He loosened his cuff again, Slow and Controlled. Like everything he did. Silence filled the space between us. Heavy, Uncomfortable. I could feel his presence too strongly. Like the room wasn’t big enough for both of us. My wolf stirred again. Restless, Uneasy. Mate… I pressed my lips together. I hate that word now. I hated how it made me feel. “How long are you going to stand there?” I looked up. He was watching me now. His eyes are sharp. Unreadable. “I don’t know where to stand,” I said quietly. And he said “Anywhere.” That didn’t help. I exhaled slowly and took a few more steps forward. Closer, But not too close. I stopped again. He didn’t look away. Not once. It made my chest tighten. “Look at me.” He said My breath caught. Slowly… I did. Our eyes met, And just like before— Everything shifted. That pull, Stronger, Closer. My heartbeat picked up. I could feel it in my chest. In my throat, Everywhere. His jaw tightened slightly. Like he felt it too. But didn’t want to, didn't accept it. I looked away first. I couldn’t hold it. Not like that. “From tonight,” he said, “this is where you stay.” My fingers curled slightly. “I know.” He stepped a little closer, Not much, But enough. Enough for me to feel it. That shift. That closeness. My breath slowed… then sped up again. “I don’t like repeating myself,” he added. “I heard you for the first time.” My voice came out softer than I expected. Silence again. So “You were talking downstairs.” He said My chest tightened, so he heard. Of course he did. “About her,” he added. I hesitated. Then nodded slightly. “Yes.” His expression didn’t change. “She won’t do anything.” I almost laughed. But I didn’t. “You don’t know that.” “I do.” His voice was firm. Certain. But I shook my head. “No.” That word came out stronger than I expected. He noticed. His eyes narrowed slightly.“You think I’m wrong?” I swallowed. “I think you’re ignoring it.” Silence, Thick, Heavy. “I saw the way she looked at me,” I continued, quieter now. “That wasn’t just anger.” He didn’t respond. But he didn’t interrupt either. “That kind of look…” I added, “it doesn’t just disappear.” I wrapped my arms around myself slightly. “I’ve seen it before.” Linda. The memory hit quickly. Sharp, Painful, I pushed it away. I didn’t want to think about that now. Not here, not with him. “You’re overthinking,” he said. I shook my head again. “No.” Because I knew what I felt. And this— This wasn’t nothing. A small silence fell. Then he turned away from me. Like the conversation was over, Like it didn’t matter. That made something in my chest tighten again. “Why don’t you care?” I asked. The question slipped out. Before I could stop it. He paused. Just slightly. Then he said “I do.” I frowned. “That’s not what it looks like.” He turned his head a little. Not fully. “Control doesn’t mean I don’t care.” I didn’t respond. Because I didn’t understand that. Not fully, not yet. I looked around the room. Trying to focus on something else. Anything else. The bed is large, too large. My stomach dropped slightly. “Where am I supposed to sleep?” I asked quietly. “Figure it out.” He said Of course. I nodded slowly. Even though he wasn’t looking. I walked to the bed. Sat at the edge. My hands resting on my lap. Still trying not to shake, trying not to think. But my mind didn’t listen. It kept going back. To her, to that look, to that silence. To the way everything changed in one night. I lay down slowly. Keeping distance as much as I could. Even if it didn’t feel like enough. Because I could still feel him. That presence, that pull. That connection I didn’t want. I turned slightly. Facing away. Trying to create space. Even if it didn’t work. The room stayed quiet. But not empty. Never empty. My eyes stayed open, Staring into nothing, Listening, Feeling and thinking one thing. Clear, Unavoidable. Tonight didn’t end anything. It started something. And I was already inside it. Without knowing how to get out.
