**Chapter Thirteen: The Unforeseen Setback**

1511 Words
The sunlight filtered through the tall windows of their penthouse, casting long shadows across the sleek, minimalist furniture. The city sprawled beneath them, its hum and bustle seemingly distant in the tranquility of their space. Ella stood by the kitchen counter, her fingers absentmindedly twirling a pen as she looked over the wedding plans. After months of navigating through family expectations, their unpredictable whirlwind romance, and her own journey through school, they were finally here. The wedding. The thought of finally marrying Asher had been a dream she hadn’t dared to entertain too seriously, not until it was right in front of her. Now, the excitement was real. They had both agreed on a small, intimate ceremony, away from the prying eyes of the world—a day where they could focus entirely on each other, where the pressures of Asher’s empire could temporarily be forgotten. But as much as she tried to ignore it, the doubt still crept in—things had been almost too perfect lately. She and Asher were on the same page about so many things. They had made incredible strides together, both personally and professionally. She had completed her degree, and they had found a new rhythm as a couple. Their love felt deeper and more solid than it ever had, and yet, something about today felt different. She glanced up from her plans as the sound of Asher’s footsteps approached. His tall frame appeared in the doorway, his usual confident demeanor replaced with a subtle tension she hadn’t seen in weeks. He was dressed casually—a navy blue sweater and jeans—but there was something about the way he stood there, his jaw tight and his gaze focused elsewhere, that made her heart skip a beat. “Hey,” Ella said softly, setting down the wedding plans on the counter. “What’s going on? You look like you’ve got something on your mind.” Asher let out a slow breath and crossed the room toward her, his eyes meeting hers. He took a moment before responding, his voice unusually measured. “I… I need to talk to you about something,” he said. There was a heaviness in his tone that made Ella’s stomach tighten with uncertainty. He was never this serious unless something was wrong. “Okay,” she said, her heart rate picking up. “What’s going on?” Asher’s eyes flicked toward the window, as though searching for the right words. Finally, he met her gaze again, his expression unreadable. “It’s about my ex… Sophie,” he began, using her name as though it pained him. Ella felt a sharp pang in her chest, but she forced herself to remain calm. “I thought we’d talked about her before,” Ella said, trying to keep her voice steady, though she couldn’t hide the undercurrent of apprehension. Sophie had always been a point of tension for Ella, but she’d tried to put those feelings aside, trusting in the love she and Asher shared. “We have,” Asher said, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “But there’s something I didn’t tell you—something I should’ve told you sooner.” His eyes locked on hers, his expression filled with guilt. “Sophie… she’s pregnant.” Ella’s heart stuttered in her chest, her breath catching in her throat as she processed his words. A thousand thoughts rushed to her mind in an instant, but none of them seemed to make sense. “She’s what?” Ella whispered, her voice barely audible. Asher winced as if the words themselves were painful to say. “I didn’t find out until a few days ago. She reached out to me, told me she’s expecting. It’s… it’s mine.” He let out a long breath, watching her carefully, waiting for her reaction. Ella felt the ground shift beneath her feet. She was in shock, unable to fully grasp the gravity of what he was saying. A baby? With Sophie? Her chest tightened as a rush of emotions flooded in: confusion, fear, anger. A thousand questions clamored for attention, but one stood out above the rest: *Why hadn’t he told me sooner?* “I… I don’t understand,” Ella finally managed, her voice trembling. “Why didn’t you tell me about this right away?” Asher’s face softened, his eyes apologetic. He moved closer to her, but she stepped back instinctively, her arms crossing over her chest as if to protect herself from the emotional blow. “I didn’t want to burden you with this,” he said quietly, his voice low. “You’ve already had so much to deal with—your studies, the wedding plans, everything. I wanted to wait until I had more clarity about what was going to happen. I wanted us to focus on *us*—on our future.” Ella shook her head, the hurt swelling inside her. “You should’ve told me sooner, Asher. We’re about to get married. This is a huge part of your life, of *our* life now. You can’t just keep something like this from me.” “I know,” he said, his voice pleading. “I know. I was wrong. But I didn’t know how to bring it up. I didn’t want to ruin everything we’ve built. You mean everything to me, Ella.” Ella looked at him, her heart heavy with the weight of his words. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to hold on to the love they shared, but the fear and doubt gnawing at her were hard to ignore. She felt betrayed, though she knew he had made this decision with the best of intentions. “What does this mean, Asher?” she asked quietly, her voice hoarse. “What does it mean for us? For our wedding? For our future?” Asher’s face tightened as he stepped forward again, taking her hand in his. “I don’t know. But I’m going to do everything I can to make sure this doesn’t affect us. I’m going to be there for her, for the child, but I want you to know that you’re still my priority. I love you, Ella. You are my future.” Her mind was racing. She had been so focused on the wedding plans, on their life together, that this new reality felt like a punch to the gut. A child—his child—with his ex. Sophie’s presence had always loomed in the background, but now, it was something she couldn’t avoid. The baby would tie Asher to Sophie in a way that nothing else could. No amount of love or commitment could change that. Ella swallowed hard, her chest tightening as she looked up at him. “I don’t know what to think right now. I love you too, Asher. But this… this is a lot to take in.” “I know,” he said, his voice raw with emotion. “And I’m sorry for springing this on you. But please, let me prove to you that you are still my number one priority. We can work through this, together. We’ll figure it out.” Ella’s mind was still spinning, and though she wanted to believe him, part of her was afraid. Afraid that this new complication would change everything. That it would create a rift between them, one that they couldn’t close. But then, there was a voice inside her that told her to trust him. He had always been there for her. Maybe this was a test—a challenge that they could face and overcome, together. She closed her eyes, trying to steady her breath. “I just… I need some time, Asher,” she whispered. “Time to process this. This is a huge shock, and I can’t just pretend everything is fine.” “Take all the time you need,” he said softly, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. “I’ll be right here. And when you’re ready, we’ll talk about what comes next. No pressure, I promise.” Ella nodded, the weight of the situation settling deep in her chest. She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew one thing for sure: she couldn’t make any decisions in haste. As much as she loved Asher, she had to figure out what this meant for her. What it meant for their marriage, for their life. As she stood there, her mind whirling with a thousand thoughts, one thing became clear—she had to make sure she was okay first. Only then could she decide if their love could withstand this new challenge. And, more importantly, if she could still walk down the aisle to marry the man she loved, knowing that the life they were about to build might be even more complicated than she ever imagined. And so, for the first time in a long while, Ella didn’t know what to do next. But she had to trust that, in time, the answers would come.
