The moment Kael released control, the air changed. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t dramatic. It was worse. Everything in the room felt like it exhaled at the same time—like reality itself had been holding its breath waiting for that moment.
The hunters stepped back instinctively. Even they felt it. Something inside Kael was no longer restrained. But it wasn’t wild. Not yet. It was a controlled collapse.
Kael stood still for half a second. And then— His eyes shifted. Not fully human. Not fully lost. Something in between. My heart slammed violently in my chest.
“Kael…” I whispered.
He didn’t respond. His head tilted slightly, like he was listening to something only he could hear. The resonance disruptor pulsed again in the hunters’ hands.
But this time— Kael didn’t react like before. He adapted. Slowly. Like something inside him had stopped resisting and started recalculating.
One of the hunters stepped forward cautiously.
“He’s unstable,” the man said. “Contain him now.”
Kael moved. Not fast. Not slow. Just… certain. In a single motion, he crossed the distance between them.
The first hunter didn’t even finish raising his weapon.
Kael grabbed his wrist and twisted. Not violently. Efficiently. The weapon dropped. Then Kael pushed him back. Not a strike. A removal.
The hunter hit the wall and slid down, unconscious. Silence followed instantly. My breath stopped. That wasn’t random power. That was precision under collapse.
Kael turned slowly toward the remaining hunters. And for the first time— I saw fear on their faces.
“He’s adapting to suppression,” one of them whispered.
Kael tilted his head slightly again. Then spoke. His voice was lower now. Different. Not fully him. But not fully gone.
“You should have left when you had the chance.”
A pulse of silence followed that. Then the hunters attacked together. Three at once. The room exploded into motion again. But this time— Kael wasn’t just fighting them.
He was reading them. Predicting them. Every movement they made seemed to arrive too late. One hunter swung— Kael stepped aside before the motion even finished forming.
Another lunged— Kael caught him mid-air and redirected him into the third. Bodies collided. The wood cracked. Dust filled the air. My chest tightened painfully. This wasn’t a fight anymore. The collapse turned into a strategy.
But something was wrong. I felt it before I saw it. Kael’s breathing. Heavier now. Uneven. Controlled—but slipping at the edges.
“Elira!” he suddenly called.
I flinched.
“Move!” he ordered sharply.
I didn’t think so. I ran toward the back of the room. But the floor shook violently. Another pulse from the disruptor hit the air. Pain shot through my chest. I stumbled. Kael turned instantly. Too fast. Too reactive.
He caught me before I fell completely. For a second—
Everything froze. His hand was on my arm again. And the moment he touched me— The resonance flared violently. Heat. Pressure. Something alive between us. Kael froze.
His expression tightened instantly. Then he let go like it burned him.
“Don’t get close to me,” he said sharply.
I stared at him.
“You’re the one holding me up!”
“That’s not what I mean.”
His voice lowered. Strained again.
“I am not stable right now.”
The words hit differently this time. Because I could see it. The shift in his eyes. The cracks forming in control. The hunters recovered again behind him. One of them smiled.
“He’s breaking,” the man said.
Kael’s jaw tightened. Then— Something changed. Not violently. Not suddenly. But deeply. Like something inside him accepted a decision. He exhaled slowly. And turned slightly toward me.
“Elira,” he said quietly.
My chest tightened at my name again.
“I need you to do something.”
My throat went dry. “What?” He looked at me fully now. And this time— There was no command in his voice. Only clarity.
“When I say run,” he said, “you run without looking back.”
My heart dropped.
“No.”
He didn’t argue. Just nodded slightly. Like he already expected that answer. The disruptor pulsed again. Kael flinched slightly this time. Barely visible.
But I saw it.
The hunters noticed too.
“He’s weakening,” one said.
Kael stepped forward again. But slower now. Controlled collapse was turning into strain. He attacked again. But something had changed. Each movement cost more. Each strike took effort.
The hunters realized it immediately.
“He can’t sustain it,” one of them said.
Kael didn’t deny it. Because it was true. Another pulse hit the air. Kael staggered. This time more visibly. My stomach dropped.
“No…” I whispered.
One hunter moved toward me. Kael reacted instantly.
Too fast. He intercepted the man mid-step. But this time— He didn’t finish cleanly. He hesitated. Half a second. That hesitation changed everything.
The hunter struck him. Kael hit the ground. Silence shattered in my chest.
“Kael!” I ran forward without thinking.
He lifted a hand immediately.
“Stop,” he said sharply.
But I didn’t.
I reached him anyway. And the moment I did— Everything snapped again. The resonance surged violently through my chest. Kael froze.
So did I.
His hand was on the floor. Mine hovered near him.
And the world around us felt like it stopped again. The hunters saw it.
“What is that reaction?” one whispered.
Kael looked up at me slowly. And for the first time— I saw something terrifying in his expression. Not fear of enemies. Fear of connection.
“Elira…” he said quietly. His voice was strained now. Almost breaking.
“You are interfering with my collapse control.”
“What does that mean?” I whispered. But he didn’t answer.
Because the hunters attacked again. This time faster. Kael pushed himself up—but not fully recovered. He moved to intercept them again. But I saw it now. He was losing synchronization. Not power. Control.
And I realized something worse. He was still fighting.
Not for victory. For time.
“Elira!” he shouted suddenly. This time louder.
“RUN!”
The command snapped something in me. I hesitated— But the ground beneath us cracked suddenly from another disruptor pulse. Kael turned fully toward me.
And something inside him broke just slightly.
“Now,” he said softer. And I ran. This time I didn’t think.I ran. Behind me, chaos erupted again. Kael moved to hold them back. I didn’t look. I couldn’t. Because if I did— I might stop.
The exit door burst open ahead of me. Cold air hit my face instantly. The Shadow Forest waited outside. Dark. Thick. Alive.
I stepped into it just as the house behind me collapsed into sound again. And for the first time— I realized I wasn’t sure if Kael was following me… or holding them back alone.
I ran deeper into the forest. Branches scratched my skin. My breath burned in my chest. The ground was uneven. Unfamiliar. Everything inside me screamed to stop. But I didn’t.
Because something worse was behind me. Or maybe— Someone. A sound erupted behind me. Not footsteps. Impact.
Something massive hitting the ground. My chest tightened.
“Kael…” I whispered without meaning to.
And then— A voice came from behind me. Close. Too close.
“Elira…”
I froze. Because it wasn’t a hunter. It was him.
But his voice— Was different. Lower. Strained. And unstable. I turned slowly. And saw him standing between the trees.
Breathing heavily. Eyes flickering again. Not fully human anymore. Not fully anything. And when he spoke again— My blood turned cold.
“I told you not to look back.”
