"NO!" Luke pushed through until he got to Lola. He and Dad switched places and he began beating her chest. I held my breath until she suddenly sputtered.
She gasped as Luke turned her on her side and began pounding her back. It was the scariest s**t I'd ever seen. She was retching and choking and it was a few minutes before she was able to breathe normally. She was so pale. Luke grabbed her and began sobbing, cradling her like a baby.
There was an eerie silence, broken only by the wails of Luke's mother that were soon drowned out by sirens of the approaching emergency vehicles.
"CLEAR OUT!!"
I snapped back to reality and moved so Luke could carry her limp figure off the dock. I followed behind, not knowing what to do or say to comfort him. What could I say?
