I had been in plenty of awkward situations in my life but sitting on a couch in Emmy’s parents’ lounge room while they all stared at each other in silence was by far the most awkward to date. It was like none of them wanted to be the first to speak.
Emmy hadn’t told me too much about her home life, but the way they looked at her now, I understood while she felt like she didn’t belong. She had been gone for over a month, and there had not been one tear, one hug, nothing. If that had been my kid, I would have been so relieved to see them alive and well that nothing else would have mattered.
