Chapter Three.
Kelly fiddled with her phone, her mind was a jumbled mess. The room windows were open, the wind flapping her hair sideways as she lay in bed contemplating on whether to give Ian a call or not. She didn’t want to believe what Selene had told her however, she did and right now, the only thought on her mind was how?, when?, and how soon this would happen. She also thought about Elyse, her sister. What if the two occurrences happening to them were connected? Something or someone was up against them and she had no idea why? A problem was definitely brewing and she knew not what to do to stop it. She grabbed the sheets of the mattress tightly as her thoughts delved deeper. Knowing she had no control of what would happen in the future. She couldn’t even be sure that she and Ian would get back together, if ever they separated.
She exhaled, a sudden knock came on her door intruding her thoughts as she sat up in bed, slowly opening her eyes.
“Who is it?” She asked with precaution.
The door creaked open revealing Eleanor’s face.
“Mum?” Kelly quipped as her mum’s face peeked out.
“Dinner is ready. You should join us.”Eleanor said.
“What’s for dinner?”
“Wagyu beef and truffle mashed potatoes.” Eleanor replied giving her a warm cozy smile. “Your favorite.” She added afterwards as she noticed her daughter’s reluctance.
Kelly hissed slightly, she wasn’t interested in the food, not with every d**n thing that was bothering her. She didn’t feel hungry by the way. All her thoughts were directed on something else and it was something she didn’t want to think about.
“Aren’t you coming downstairs to eat?” Eleanor asked when she noticed her daughter’s apathetic behavior.
Kelly shook her head. No. She was uninterested.
“Why not?”
“Nothing. I’m just not feeling hungry.” She replied with a hiss portraying her frustration.
“Are you still thinking about Elyse?” Eleanor asked with concern etched across her jaw.
“What’s there to not think about?” She snapped back.
“You really don’t have to trouble yourself. I know Elyse, she can handle this and the moon goddess is watching her. Keeping her safe for me, okay?” Eleanor reassured her.
Kelly palmed her face in despair, she couldn’t be convinced by what her mum had just said. The moon goddess was watching them truly but…, probably not in this way.
“Okay mum.” She sighed not wanting to say anything more. “I just want to be left alone and maybe I would try talking to Elyse this night.” She told her mum and Eleanor smiled. She had tried talking to Elyse earlier this morning again but she was blocking, she also didn’t pick her calls either.
“Is Ian back?” She asked Eleanor a moment later.
“No, he isn’t. Not yet but he would be back soon.”
“I would wait till he gets back.” She said and lay back in bed closing her eyes not opening them again until she was sure that her mother had left.
How was she supposed to survive this? The weight of it all settled deep in her mind. Living without Ian? Even if it was for a few days she would never survive it.
She picked up her phone again. The very same thing she had been considering was up on her mind again. She could warn him about it right? Let him know it was bound to happen, this wouldn’t have any effects in the future, would it?
She stared at Ian’s contact info for a while before pushing the button that would place the call. First ring, second ring, there was no response. She sighed and placed her phone back on the bed. If he found her missed call, he would call back, she was sure about that.
It wasn’t long before she heard her phone beep, probably five minutes later. She picked it up.
“Hello.” Ian’s deep voice resonated in her ears, raw, deep, hoarse and it was also… cold?
Kelly pursed her lip skeptically, why on earth did he sound like this?
“Is something wrong?” She asked first ignoring the reason she had been so desperate to call him. The concern was evident in her voice. There was a long pause on the other side of the line, long enough that Kelly thought their connection had been severed.
“I would like to see you.” Ian said ignoring her earlier question.
“Why? For what? And where are you?” She asked all the questions on her mind at the same time.
“At the Emeralds suites. You would know why I asked you to come her when we meet. It can’t be discussed on phone.” He said curtly.
“But is something wrong?” Kelly asked again. She wanted to know the answer to this one. Since she and Ian had been together, she had never heard or seen him talk this way. Not to her, not to anyone. He was always gentle and kind, not this cold and stiff. His voice usually gave her chills but right now she felt nothing, if not fear.
“I don’t know yet but you coming would determine that.” He said and cut off the line leaving her confused.
Kelly took a deep breath, anxiety settling within her as she thought. She didn’t waste time anymore and reached for her cloth which was hanging on the stand. She hurried out of the room and out of the pack house with only one thought on her mind.
What exactly was Lilith up to?
~**~
Ian Garfield sat in the VIP bar lounge of the emerald hotel and suites. This was where he always planned his meetings but today he was here for something entirely different. He had received a call, particularly from Elyse. After she told him she wanted to see him privately, he had wasted no more time before he booked a lounge at the Emeralds.
Now, here he was sitting right before Elyse unable to believe what was happening. D**n, he couldn’t believe it. Kelly was his mate! But how come he felt a deep connection to Elyse? Was that right? Or was this is mind playing jokes on him?
“I don’t believe her and you shouldn’t. This bond is fake.” His wolf argued within his mind but Ian shut Warrick out. He didn’t like disturbances, they didn’t prove useful especially in moments like this. As much as he wanted to believe Warrick , he couldn’t quite deny this bond. It was the same as what he felt with Kelly, only this one was stronger, more intense and he could feel Elyse’s emotions as much as he felt his own. Not that he couldn’t feel Kelly’s, just that this one was more intense and it was bordering on being implausible.
“I don’t want to believe this.” He muttered to himself but it seemed Elyse had heard him as she replied.
“Me either.” She said with tears in her eyes. “She has never showed any interest in you before. I don’t know why she would do this.” Elyse lamented.
If what Elyse was saying was true, then he had no choice but to do the needful and dreaded what that entailed.
“It’s okay. I’ve given her a call. I’m sure she’s on her way here. We would talk about it once she arrives.” He consoled her.
Ian assumed a rigid composure, he couldn’t afford to be swayed. He and Kelly and spent more years together and he couldn’t easily believe that she would stoop as low as to forge a mate bond between them. She didn’t look like the desperate one to him but then, what he felt for Elyse proved otherwise and if truly Elyse was his real mate. How come he only felt it now? Why hadn’t he felt it prior.
The bond he shared with Kelly was more like the flicker of a candle compared to this bond Shying away at the sight of the real deal. Now that he thought about it, his bond with Kelly was weak and it was diminishing, if that was possible. He had made his decision, he would believe in what he felt and not what he saw. He would handle the situation perfectly, without noise, no one had to know about this. Besides, he didn’t like being the center of attraction.
His phone buzzed in his pocket and shoved it on his ears.
“I’m here.” He heard Kelly’s voice.
“Tell the guards to show you in.” He said to her. He didn’t want to speak much, talk much. Any protrusion and he would unleash his pent up anger.
The door opened and Kelly walked inside with deliberately slow steps as she wore a confused expression.
“Why did you call me here?” She asked and walked up to him failing to notice that Elyse was also there.
She was taken aback by Ian’s remoteness as he remained impassive.
“Just stay back.” He said calmly. But he wasn’t calm, she could see that.
“What is it?” She asked in an incredulously low voice.
“I want an explanation.” He declared.
“What explanation?” She asked with a raised eyebrow. It was then she noticed Elyse.
“Elyse? You’re back?” She asked in surprise, a smile replacing the look on her face. Elyse stood up.
“Yes I’m. Ian asked a question which you should give a reply to.” Elyse replied not matching the enthusiasm on her sister’s face.
Kelly turned to Ian again basically not understanding what was going on anymore.
“What is happening?” She asked no one in particular but expected someone to reply.
“ I need you to speak the truth. Are you my mate? I mean my fated mate?” Ian asked stoically. He was handling this fine, at least that was what he thought. He didn’t want to show emotions and the best option was to stay neutral. He loved Kelly, he had loved everything about her but he would choose the mate bond over anything else.
“I’m quite confused. I don’t understand you Ian.”
“You don’t have to understand me. I just want a simple answer to my question.” His voice grew louder with every word that he said. “Are you my fated mate?” He asked for the second time.
“What are you saying? Of course I’m your mate, your fated mate. Do you think I would forge a bond with you?” She yelled angrily at him. Her face contorting in anger, Where was all of this coming from?
“I never said you forged a bond with me but you already said that so I think it’s best with separate.” He deadpanned.
Kelly’s eyes widened in bewilderment, her lips shivered in terror.
“What?” She asked in the lowest whisper.
“Oh please, you heard him right.” Elyse said not meeting Kelly’s eye.
Kelly ignored her and turned to face the person who mattered most. Ian. He mattered to her and she couldn’t afford to loose him.
“You’re joking right?” Even she couldn’t believe what she was sayin. With how serious Ian looked, this was obviously not a joke and then there was Elyse. She had left two years ago. Why was she suddenly here?
With the warning Selene had given her, she didn’t think it would happen soon.
“I don’t want s separation, we lived a happy life. Please! I’m your mate.” She cried out trying to convince Ian. She wanted a chance with him. She wanted to live with him. Together.
“I can’t accept you.” Ian’s voice was a mix of emotions.
“Why?” She choked out.
“You’re not my mate. My life would be happier if I spent it with my mate and my future would be even better and I’ve found her.” Ian tried his best to be as composed as ever. He had know Kelly, ever since they were kids and he had loved her. He just couldn’t fathom why she had taken this path. D**n, he still loved her but he respected the mate bond over anything else. He chose her because he believed she was mate, he didn’t know she had forged the bond between them.
“Who is your mate?” Kelly’s voice was brittle and a bit croaky. She wasn’t about to cry but she would anytime soon.
“Elyse.”
