Chapter 4 His Call

862 Words
Scarlett's POV The next morning, I appeared at the office right on time. Professional attire, hair meticulously groomed, deeply suppressing everything that had happened in the ballroom last night. I sat down and opened my work files, acting as if nothing had ever occurred. But even though I had prepared completely, I never anticipated that Alexander would bring Faye to work. Faye wore a cream-colored loose blouse, following closely behind Alexander with a timid, delicate demeanor. Her eyes were half-lowered, her slender hand gently caressing her abdomen. Alexander walked ahead, carefully protecting her. Employees in the hallway stopped their work, their gazes following them closely as they whispered among themselves. Nothing more than the same tired phrases from last night repeated over and over. I didn't even spare them a glance, walking directly to my office. "Coby, pull up last quarter's financial reports. I need to carefully re-examine the procurement data." Coby understood immediately, quickly bringing up the reports and quietly adjusting the screen angle to ensure only I could clearly see the content. Using the cover of reviewing documents, I quietly marked several obviously abnormal figures with my pencil—those large expenditures had all been categorized under "strategic reserves" budget items, but searching my memory carefully, I had never signed any related approval documents. These suspicious pieces of evidence would be kept secretly for now—they would prove useful eventually. Just then, Alexander walked directly into the office and stopped in front of my desk. "We need to have a proper conversation." I set down my pen and slowly raised my eyes to look at him. "About what?" "Faye will stay here and safely deliver the child," he began, his tone carrying what he believed was the kind of deliberate steadiness that could control everyone. "But as I said last night, this will absolutely not affect your current position. Your noble title as Luna will not change in any way—I give you my solemn promise—" "Alexander," I stared at him, making each word clear and distinct, "you know in your heart that your promises are meaningless. You simply don't have the ability to influence my position." Alexander's facial expression stiffened for half a second, but he couldn't refute it, because anyone would know I was speaking the truth. At that moment, Faye gracefully emerged from behind him, deliberately softening her voice as if stating something any reasonable person should readily understand and accept: "Scarlett, you don't need to treat us as enemies. You must know that someone needs to bear the responsibility for the pack's succession. The pack cannot exist without the continuation of the next generation's bloodline. You should understand this principle..." "Of course I understand," I turned to face her, my tone neither elevated nor hurried. "I also understand another more important matter. The Northern Packs had a bloody precedent thirty years ago—the Alpha at the time brought in a bastard from outside. The birth mother was executed after the child's first month under the high-sounding reason of 'severely threatening internal pack stability,' and that poor child was subsequently forced to grow up miserably with the Alpha's official mate, living a fate worse than death." A visible crack appeared in the smug smile on Faye's face. "You willingly make yourself a mere breeding tool and take pride in it," I picked up my pen again and lowered my head to continue working. "This kind of regression is the real tragedy and setback for this pack." The office fell into several seconds of dead silence. I continued making necessary notations on important documents, not looking up at either of them again. Calmly, I said, "I won't do anything to the child, nor will my daily work be affected or halted because of this. But if irrelevant personnel come to disturb my private office without cause again, next time I absolutely won't limit myself to just words." Alexander stared intently at my profile. I could clearly feel that complex gaze resting heavily on me, but I resolutely refused to look up and respond. After a moment of silence, he finally walked toward the door with Faye. Just as they reached the office doorway, my phone suddenly began vibrating. Buzz, buzz The screen instantly lit up, displaying a completely unfamiliar number. Based on instinct, Alexander quickly turned back—but I had already answered the call agilely before his gaze could reach the screen content, simultaneously turning toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. "Hello," I said in as calm a voice as possible. A low, magnetic male voice came through the phone, carrying obvious authority: "Hello, this is Lucien Nightshade calling." "Hello, please hold on." After speaking, I slowly turned around. Alexander and Faye were indeed still standing in the doorway, Alexander's face written with wariness and unease. I covered the receiver and said quietly, "Please leave. I have an important call." Alexander looked at me deeply, a flash of wariness I had never seen before crossing his eyes. Only when Faye pulled at him did he finally leave my office. The moment the door closed, I felt some long-dormant power within me beginning to awaken.
