Gerald dropped Lily off at the estate and walked her only as far as the front entrance. Two of his men stood waiting. He gave them clear orders in a low voice.
“No one comes in without my word. No one leaves. If anything feels wrong, you call me first.”
The men nodded. Lily stood a few steps away, still moving carefully because of the bruises. She did not look at him when he turned toward her.
He drove straight to his office after speaking to Mako on the phone who told him he was back at the office.
The city lights passed in silence. His mind kept returning to the hospital fire and the fact that someone had tried to reach her again. By the time he walked into the office, his mood was already dark.
Mako was waiting inside, jacket still on, a folder in his hand.
“You got her settled?”
