The council’s challenge

1098 Words
The council chamber was nothing like Aria expected. No medieval stone walls. No torches. Instead, it was hidden beneath one of Damon’s corporate buildings — sleek, circular, and dimly lit. Steel and glass. Modern power wrapped around ancient instincts. But the energy inside? Primitive. Predatory. Every wolf in the room turned when Damon entered. And every single one stared at her. Judging. Measuring. Dismissing. Damon’s hand rested firmly at the small of her back as he guided her forward. Not gentle. Not subtle. Claiming. “You don’t have to stand so close,” she whispered. “Yes, I do.” His voice was low, controlled. But she could feel the tension in him. He was coiled tight. Ready to snap. At the center of the chamber stood a curved table of dark stone. Five wolves sat behind it — three men, two women. Power radiated from them. The woman from the penthouse stood among them. Cold eyes locked on Aria. “Alpha Wolfe,” one of the older men began. “You were summoned to explain.” “I don’t answer to summons,” Damon replied calmly. The temperature in the room dropped. “You bring a human into pack territory,” another council member said sharply. “You claim she is your mate.” “She is.” Aria’s stomach flipped at how certain he sounded. The woman leaned forward. “Humans cannot survive our world. They cannot lead beside an Alpha.” Damon’s arm slid fully around Aria’s waist. Firm. Possessive. “She will not be leading alone.” A murmur rippled through the chamber. The older male’s eyes narrowed. “You risk instability. Rival packs already question your strength.” “Let them,” Damon said. One of the younger wolves stood abruptly. “Strength? You tie yourself to prey.” The word sliced through the room. Prey. Aria stiffened. Before she could react— Damon moved. Faster than thought. One second he stood beside her. The next, the young wolf was on his knees. Pinned. Damon’s hand wrapped around his throat. Eyes blazing gold. “You will never refer to my mate as prey again,” Damon growled. The sound wasn’t fully human. It vibrated in Aria’s bones. The council rose instantly. “Alpha!” someone barked. The young wolf struggled. “You prove my point,” he choked. “You’re compromised.” Damon’s claws began to press into skin. A thin line of blood appeared. The entire room froze. Aria’s heart slammed against her ribs. “Damon,” she said quietly. He didn’t move. His wolf was dangerously close to taking over. “Damon,” she repeated, firmer this time. His eyes flicked toward her. The gold didn’t fade. But something inside them shifted. He released the wolf violently. The man collapsed, gasping. Damon straightened slowly. Smoothing his suit like nothing had happened. “If anyone questions my strength again,” he said evenly, “I will answer without restraint.” Silence. Heavy. Terrified silence. The older council member spoke carefully. “You cannot let instinct rule you.” Damon’s gaze hardened. “I am Alpha because I rule my instinct.” Aria wasn’t so sure. The woman from before stood. “Then prove it.” All eyes shifted. “Prove you can prioritize the pack over a human.” Damon’s arm tightened around Aria automatically. “What are you suggesting?” he asked coldly. “A trial.” The word echoed ominously. Aria’s stomach dropped. “What kind of trial?” she asked before she could stop herself. The woman looked at her like she was something fragile and disposable. “A test of survival.” Damon’s body went rigid. “No.” “You refuse?” “Yes.” Murmurs erupted. “You risk division,” the older male warned. Damon stepped forward slightly. Placing himself more fully between Aria and the council. “She will not be tested like an animal.” The woman’s expression sharpened. “Then you will face challenge.” The implication was clear. A challenge for Alpha. Power could be contested. Fought for. Taken. The air thickened with anticipation. Aria felt it. The possibility of violence. Of blood. Of Damon losing everything. Her throat tightened. “You would fight your own pack over me?” she whispered. His response was immediate. “Yes.” No hesitation. No doubt. The certainty shook her more than the threat. The older council member sighed heavily. “Damon. Think carefully.” “I have.” “You endanger all of us.” Damon’s voice dropped to something lethal. “No. You endanger yourselves.” A beat of silence. Then— He stepped forward, fully releasing Aria for the first time since entering. Power radiated off him in waves. “You want proof of strength?” he said quietly. The lights above flickered. Every wolf in the room tensed. His wolf surfaced. Not partially. Not subtly. Fully. Golden eyes blazing. Aura crushing. Dominance suffocating. Several lower-ranking wolves instinctively lowered their heads. Even council members stiffened. “This pack survives because I allow it to,” Damon continued. “Not because you question me.” The air felt too heavy to breathe. Aria watched him in awe and fear. He wasn’t just powerful. He was terrifying. “If any wolf believes I am weakened by my mate,” Damon said slowly, “step forward.” Silence. No one moved. The woman’s jaw tightened. But she didn’t step forward either. Damon’s gaze swept the room. Satisfied. “Good.” His eyes dimmed back to normal. But the message lingered. Unmistakable. He returned to Aria’s side. Placed his hand at her back again. Not aggressive now. Protective. Possessive. “You will accept her,” he said calmly. “Or you will find a new Alpha.” The threat hung in the air long after he turned and walked out. The chamber doors shut behind them. Only when they reached the private elevator did Aria finally exhale. “You were going to kill him,” she said quietly. “Yes.” Her heart skipped. “And you’d fight all of them?” “Yes.” She searched his face. “Why?” His gaze softened just slightly. Because you are my mate. Because my wolf would tear the world apart for you. Because losing power means nothing compared to losing you. But what he said was: “Because you are mine.” The elevator doors closed. And for the first time— Aria realized something dangerous. The council wasn’t the biggest threat. His obsession was.
