The house was quiet after Gabriel walked away.
Too quiet.
Prisca stood in the middle of the living room, her arms wrapped around herself, her body still shaking from the words he had thrown at her. The sound of the door closing upstairs echoed in her head again and again.
I regret meeting you, Prisca.
Those words did not just hurt.
They broke something inside her.
She slowly sat down on the couch, staring at the floor like she could still see him standing there, angry, disappointed, tired of her.
For the first time in years, she felt like she had lost control.
Gabriel had never spoken to her like that before.
Never.
No matter how angry he was, he always came back to her.
Always.
But today felt different.
Today he looked like a man who had nothing left to hold on to.
Her chest tightened.
“What if he really leaves…” she whispered to herself.
The thought alone made her breathing faster.
She stood up suddenly and started pacing around the room.
“No… no… no… he can’t leave… he won’t leave… he can’t…”
Her mind was racing.
Victoria.
That woman again.
Everything always went back to her.
Ever since she came back, nothing had been the same.
Gabriel changed.
The way he talked changed.
The way he looked at Prisca changed.
Even the way he stayed in the house felt different, like his heart was somewhere else.
Prisca stopped near the window and looked outside.
Her hands were shaking.
“If he goes back to her… what happens to me… what happens to my children…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
She quickly wiped them away.
“No… I won’t let that happen.”
She said it slowly.
Firmly.
“I didn’t fight all these years just to lose everything now.”
She sat down again, thinking.
Thinking hard.
She needed something strong.
Something that would stop him.
Something that would make him feel guilty.
Something that would make him remember that she was the one who stayed with him all these years.
Her heart started beating faster as an idea entered her mind.
At first, she shook her head.
“No… that’s too much…”
She stood up again.
Walked to the kitchen.
Came back.
Sat down.
Stood up again.
Her breathing became uneven.
“But what choice do I have…”
She whispered.
“If he signs those divorce papers… I’m finished.”
Her fingers tightened slowly.
Then she said it.
“An accident.”
Silence filled the room.
She stared at nothing for a few seconds.
Then she nodded slowly.
“Yes…”
“If he thinks he almost lost me… he won’t leave.”
Her lips trembled, but she forced herself to stay strong.
“He still cares… I know he does…”
She grabbed her car keys from the table.
Her heart was beating so loud she could hear it in her ears.
She stopped at the door for a moment.
Took a deep breath.
“This is the only way…”
Then she walked out.
Outside, the evening air felt cold.
Prisca entered the car and sat behind the wheel.
Her hands were shaking again.
She held the steering wheel tightly.
For a moment, she almost changed her mind.
Almost.
But Gabriel’s voice echoed in her head again.
I regret meeting you.
Her jaw tightened.
“No… you don’t get to say that and walk away.”
She started the engine.
The car moved slowly out of the compound.
She drove without a clear direction at first.
Just moving.
Thinking.
Her eyes were full of tears, but her face was hard.
After a few minutes, she reached a quiet road.
Not many cars.
Not many people.
Perfect.
Her heart started beating faster again.
She slowed down.
Looked around.
No one close.
She whispered to herself.
“Not too much… just enough…”
Her hands tightened on the steering wheel.
She pressed the accelerator slightly.
Then suddenly turned the wheel toward the side barrier.
The car hit the metal rail with a loud sound.
BANG.
The airbag opened immediately.
The car stopped.
Everything went silent.
Prisca sat there breathing hard.
Her heart was racing like she had just run for miles.
Her head hit the airbag lightly, but she wasn’t seriously hurt.
She stayed still for a moment.
Then slowly started crying.
Real tears this time.
Not because of the accident.
Because of everything.
Her shaking fingers reached for her phone.
She stared at Gabriel’s name on the screen.
Her lips trembled.
She pressed call.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
He didn’t pick.
Her breathing became faster.
She called again.
This time he answered.
His voice sounded tired.
“What is it, Prisca?”
She started crying louder immediately.
“Gabriel…”
Her voice was weak.
Broken.
“Gabriel… I… I had an accident…”
Silence.
“What?”
“My car… I hit the rail… I don’t know… I feel dizzy…”
His breathing changed.
“Where are you?”
She told him the location.
He didn’t say anything for a second.
Then he spoke quickly.
“Stay there. Don’t move. I’m coming.”
The call ended.
Prisca dropped the phone on her lap.
Her tears kept falling.
Not all of them were fake anymore.
Because deep down…
She knew she had gone too far.
Gabriel threw the phone on the bed and stood up immediately.
His heart was beating fast.
Accident.
Prisca.
For a moment, all the anger disappeared.
He grabbed his keys and rushed out of the house.
His mind was full.
Confused, angry, and worried.
He hit the steering wheel once before starting the car.
“Why now…”
He drove fast.
Faster than he should.
His hands were tight on the wheel.
He kept remembering her crying voice.
He hated himself for caring.
But he couldn’t stop.
No matter what happened between them…
She was still the mother of his children.
And he was not a heartless man.
He reached the road she mentioned.
He saw the car from a distance.
His chest tightened.
He parked quickly and ran out.
“Prisca!”
She was still inside the car.
Head down.
Crying.
He opened the door fast.
“Are you hurt?”
She looked up slowly, tears on her face.
“I… I’m okay… I think…”
He checked her quickly.
No blood.
No serious injury.
He exhaled deeply.
Relief hit him before he could stop it.
“Why were you driving like this?” he asked, his voice still hard.
She started crying again.
“I wasn’t looking… I was thinking…”
He froze.
“Thinking about what?”
She looked at him.
Her eyes full of tears.
“You.”
Silence.
He looked away immediately.
“Let’s go to the hospital,” he said.
“I’m fine…”
“We’re going.”
His tone didn’t allow argument.
He helped her out of the car.
She leaned on him slightly.
He didn’t push her away.
That alone made her chest tighten.
He put her in his car and drove.
Neither of them spoke for a while.
The silence was heavy.
Finally she whispered.
“I thought you left me…”
He didn’t answer.
“I thought you hated me…”
Still no answer.
Her voice broke again.
“I got scared…”
His jaw tightened.
“Don’t do this again,” he said quietly.
She looked at him.
“What?”
“This… whatever this is… don’t do it again.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I almost died, Gabriel…”
“You hit a rail, not a truck,” he replied.
His words were cold.
But his hands on the steering wheel were shaking.
She noticed.
And that gave her hope.
Small.
But enough.
She leaned her head back and closed her eyes, still crying softly.
Gabriel kept driving, his face hard, but his heart not as strong as he wanted it to be.
When they reached the hospital, he helped her out again.
He stayed.
He waited.
He signed papers.
He talked to the doctor.
He didn’t leave.
And Prisca saw it.
Even after everything…
He didn’t leave.
That meant something.
It had to mean something.
Later, when they finally left the hospital, the night was already deep.
They walked to the car slowly.
Prisca stopped before entering.
She looked at him.
Her voice low.
“Gabriel…”
He didn’t look at her.
“What.”
“I’m sorry.”
He closed his eyes for a second.
Then opened them again.
But he didn’t reply.
He just opened the car door.
She entered quietly.
He walked to the driver’s side.
Started the engine.
They drove home in silence.
When they reached the house, he stopped the car but didn’t get out immediately.
His hands stayed on the wheel.
His face tired.
Prisca watched him carefully. Hoping he would react or say something.
But he finally spoke without looking at her.
“Go inside. You need to rest.”
Her chest hurt hearing the distance in his voice.
She nodded slowly and got down.
She walked toward the house alone.
When she reached the door, she stopped.
Her shoulders started shaking.
Tears fell again.
Not fake.
Not planned, but real.
Because she knew the truth.
She had stopped him tonight.
But she had not fixed anything.
And deep inside…
She was more afraid than ever.
She held herself tightly and whispered,
“What if this time… I really lost him…”
