THE ASCENT OF GLASS

522 Words
The air grew progressively thinner and sharper with every hour Elara marched upward, leaving the giant of the foot far below. The winding path, which had begun as dirt and loose gravel, gradually gave way to a strange, treacherous substance. The ground beneath her feet was no longer solid rock, but a thick, shimmering sheet of absolute ice that looked exactly like shattered glass. Each step she took resulted in a high-pitched, metallic ringing sound that echoed eerily off the sheer cliff faces. The climb became a grueling physical test. The wind, fueled by Malakor’s growing power, did not just blow; it roared down the slopes like a physical wall, actively trying to push her off the narrow ledge. The freezing temperature bit cruelly at her nose and cheeks, turning her breath into instant frost upon her woolen scarf. Her lungs burned with the effort of drawing oxygen from the thin, frigid air, and her calves throbbed with a dull, persistent ache.To prevent her mind from focusing on the sheer, bottomless drop to her left, Elara pulled her heavy woolen cloak tightly around her frame and fixed her eyes entirely on the ground directly in front of her. She began to use her environment to her advantage. Instead of fighting the slippery terrain, she looked for the small, frozen ridges in the glass-like ice, planting the heels of her boots firmly into the grooves. As the hours dragged on and her physical strength began to flag, Elara turned to the only comfort she had left: her memories. She began to hum, her voice small and fragile against the immense roaring of the mountain wind. She chose the rhythmic, cheerful baking songs she used to sing in her cozy stone cottage while kneading massive troughs of dough. The songs were metered to the steady, repetitive motion of her hands, and now, she timed her footsteps to that same ancient rhythm.“Fold the flour, catch the fire, lift the bread up high,” she whispered-sang, her frozen lips moving with difficulty. “Warm the heart and feed the soul, under winter’s sky.”The familiar, domestic melodies acted like a shield against the hostile wilderness. They reminded her exactly why she was here: not for personal glory, or because she desired to be a warrior, but to protect the simple, beautiful lives of the people who sang those songs with her. The music transformed the terrifying, cold silence of the high peaks into a space of quiet, internal resilience.By mid-afternoon, she encountered a particularly dangerous stretch where the path narrowed to a mere foot in width, completely coated in a smooth, frictionless glare of ice. There were no ridges to catch her boots. Instead of panicking, Elara lowered her center of gravity. She dropped to her hands and knees, using her fingers to find tiny imperfections in the rock face to her right. She crawled inch by inch, her numbed fingers gripping the frozen stone until she finally reached a wider, safer ledge. She sat back against the solid mountain wall, gasping for breath, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her spirit remained unbroken.
