Chapter 4

The results of the amniocentesis would only come out after three days. Winnie's face was pale and weak. She avoided Stanley's hand when he tried to help her and limped out of the ward step by step. Stanley grabbed his car keys and moved to follow her. "Winnie..." An arm stopped him. Andy said, "Go home first." Stanley watched Winnie's small figure fade into the distance. He spoke quickly. "She looks really bad. I will drive her back." Andy replied firmly. "I will take her." "She is not feeling well right now..." "I know. She is my girlfriend. I will get her home safely." Andy's sharp tone cut through the hospital corridor. Stanley took a deep breath. "Andy, are you starting to care about Winnie?" Andy gave him an annoyed look. Stanley raised both hands. "Fine. I take it back." "As long as you are not falling for her." Andy looked at him coldly. His face became calm again. "You better not either." Stanley froze for a second. Then he looked away and forced a light tone. "A toy is just a toy. Why would I care?" "Then go home." Andy took his keys and quickly went after Winnie. Stanley stood still for a long time. Then he gave a quiet "yeah" and walked away. Winnie's thin figure stood out in the crowd. Andy caught up to her in a few steps. "I will drive you home." Winnie looked up slowly. Her eyes were tired and empty. "Not done playing yet?" Andy shot back. "And you? Not done taking advantage yet?" His eyes dropped to her stomach. "Using a child? That is clever." Winnie's throat tightened. "This child has nothing to do with you." "Stop spouting nonsense." Andy grabbed her arm and pulled her toward his car. "Get in." Winnie had no strength left to resist. She was forced inside. She tried to get out, but he stopped her. "Stay put. If you are going after money, then act like it." Winnie's anger finally burst. She slapped him hard. "Going after money? Andy, what proof do you even have? You have nothing to back it up, so what right do you have to accuse me like this?" "Nothing to back it up?" Andy turned his head slightly. Her handprint was clear on his face. He gave a low laugh and started the car. The motion felt familiar, like slipping into an old memory. When he was eighteen, he had just gotten his first car. He could not wait and secretly drove it to the garage. He had overheard his father praising Winnie. Well-mannered. Smart. Capable. Curious, he started watching her. Then he saw her in a dark alley with a baseball bat. Several injured men lay on the ground, groaning. Winnie looked cold and sharp. "Anyone who ruins chance at getting more money will regret it." Money. To him, that could only mean Leo's sponsorship. From that moment, Andy believed her kindness was fake, just a mask for climbing up. He gripped the steering wheel tighter but said nothing. "Winnie, you know exactly what you did." Winnie sat in the passenger seat, glaring at him. "Andy, the biggest mistake I ever made was falling for you." The words came out fast. Andy slammed on the brakes. He turned to her. His cold eyes sharpened, almost warning, almost something softer. "Stop saying things like that." Silence filled the car. Andy looked at her again. Curled up in the seat, she looked fragile. Pregnancy made her seem softer, like the girl from university. Back then, she had only looked at him. Now, her eyes were full of cold hate. Something strange stirred in Andy's chest. He wanted things to go back. He cleared his throat and softened his voice. "What do you want to eat?" Winnie let out a cold laugh. "If I am just a toy, why do you care?" Andy frowned. "You are pregnant. You need nutrition. I can have someone send food." Winnie shook her head. "No. I am afraid you will put abortion pills in it." "Suit yourself." Andy was used to being obeyed. Rejection clearly annoyed him. He spoke coldly and kept driving. His eyes still drifted to her. Winnie closed her eyes and turned away. Back at home, Stanley kept thinking. The more he thought, the more something felt wrong. After graduation night, Winnie had disappeared. Now she was back half a year later with a child. Could it really not be his or Andy's? He pushed the thought away at once. Impossible. Winnie had only ever been with them. No one else. If she wanted to climb up, she would not miss a chance to get Andy's child. Still, just in case, he sent someone to check her time overseas.
