LEVI She was a school teacher. A girl who had barely been in this town for two seconds, whose life I could dismantle with a single phone call. By every rule of the game, she should have been terrified of me. Instead, she had reached into my trousers, gripped me without a single tremor in her fingers, and told me to make her my pet. I ran a hand over my face, a rough, dry laugh escaping my throat into the silence of the room. She knew exactly what I was capable of. She had openly acknowledged that I was a monster with an entire territory at my back, and yet she still had the audacity to stand on her own two feet, look me dead in the eye, and dismiss me from her apartment. "Let's see how long that fire lasts, Claire," I murmured. The phantom heat of her hand still burned right through my skin. My phone buzzed against the desk. I swiped the screen, the familiar voice of my assistant cutting through the quiet. "Doc." "Send in the usual," I murmured. "The hotel penthouse or your estate?" "The estate," I replied, staring at the empty expanse of my king-sized bed. "And make it quick." I needed to see someone crawl. I needed someone who knew how to play the submissive role perfectly. But as I closed my eyes against the rhythm of the rain, the only thing I could see was Claire's unyielding gaze, challenging me to break her. --- CLAIRE The bass vibrated violently through the floorboards, matching the frantic beat of my own heart. The air hung thick with the scent of gin, sweat and expensive perfume. I looked down at my phone and typed out a single message. " I’m at Vault Lounge. You have exactly one hour to find me, Levi. If you aren't here by midnight, I’m leaving with the first man who buys me a drink." I tossed the phone into my bag, lifted the glass to my lips, and leaned my lower back against the bar to face the pulsing crowd. I knew exactly what I was doing. I was fully aware that I possessed no real power over a man who ruled an entire criminal territory, but I also knew his fatal flaw. Levi Hilton was an alpha predator driven by absolute possession. He couldn't stand losing, and he couldn't stand another man touching what he had already claimed. I checked my watch. 11:58 PM. Two minutes left of the hour. Right on cue, a tall, dark-haired guy in a leather jacket detached himself from the edge of the dance floor. He stepped up to the counter right next to me, leaning an elbow on the sticky wood. "Let me get her whatever she’s drinking." He turned to me, flashing a confident smile. "A girl like you shouldn't be drinking alone on a Saturday night." "I'm not alone," I replied smoothly, a dangerous thrill sparking in my chest as I tilted my chin up. "I'm just waiting on a deadline." "Well, if he's late, he's an i***t," the guy murmured, stepping closer. His hand reached out, resting on the bar right behind my hip. I offered him a slow smile. "And his time is officially..." "I wouldn't touch that if I were you." The low warning sliced through the noise of the club. Before the guy could even turn, Levi’s massive frame completely blocked out the flashing lights, casting a dark, heavy shadow over both of us. He wore a heavy black leather biker jacket over a dark t-shirt. The guy next to me stiffened, his smirk vanishing instantly as he took in Levi’s sheer size and the lethal danger radiating off him. "Hey, man, I didn't know—" "Now you do," Levi growled. "Get lost." He disappeared into the crowd within seconds. Levi stepped into the empty space, invading my boundaries just like he had in my apartment. His breath was hot against my skin, smelling faintly of expensive tobacco. "Eleven fifty-nine, Claire," he murmured. His large fingers wrapped firmly around my waist. "You have a lot of f*****g nerve." "Eleven fifty-nine," I purred, tilting my head back to meet his furious, obsidian gaze. A cocky smile spread across my lips as the bass thudded around us. "I knew you'd make it on time." He let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated against my ribs. "You really are a piece of work, Claire," he murmured. His grip shifted, his thick fingers sliding down to lace tightly through mine. He leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of my ear, his breath a dangerous, intoxicating warmth against my neck. "You wanted to see if I'd blink. Congratulations. You got my attention." She tilted her head back, watching me with that same unyielding spark I’d seen in her apartment. A slow smile touched her lips. "You’re punctual, Levi. I’ll give you that. I wondered if you were the type to let a deadline pass or if you’d show up to settle the score." "You knew exactly which one it would be," I replied, my gaze narrowing as I studied her."You went out of your way to ensure I had no other choice." "Maybe I just wanted to see if the monster in the stories was as attentive as they say," she countered, her voice smooth and entirely too calm for someone standing in my shadow. "Is he?"I stepped closer, the noise of the club fading into a dull hum as I focused entirely on her. "He's more than attentive. He's thorough. And you've just made yourself the centre of his focus." " Good," she whispered, her eyes locked onto mine. "Because I don't think I’d find a quiet life nearly as interesting." "Careful what you wish for, little teacher," I growled. My hand slid up her bare leg, bunching the fabric of her dress in my fist until I felt the searing warmth of her skin. " You wanted my attention, Claire? You have it," I whispered. "I’m looking at you, Levi. And I’m still waiting." "Then let’s give them something to look at," I murmured. "Tell me right now, before I ruin you on this sticky wood in front of this entire room—are you going to walk out of here on your own, or am I going to have to show every soul in this city exactly who you belong to?"
