Intercepted

LEVI A low, dry groan tore from the centre of the bed. Claire stirred, her dark hair tangled across her face as she slowly pulled herself upright. She winced instantly, her fingers flying to her temples. Her emerald eyes fluttered open, blinking against the light before locking onto me. "Good morning, little teacher," I murmured, my voice a smooth purr. "On the nightstand ,two aspirins and a glass of water." "Levi," she rasped, her voice thick . "What... what happened?" "You tell me," I replied, I offered her a slow, blank smile. "We were right in the middle of a very promising conversation against my dresser, and you decided to take a nap." A flash of genuine panic crossed her face. She checked under the sheets, her mind clearly racing to piece together the blank spots of her night. "I didn't... we didn't..." "No," I cut in . "I don't take from the unconscious, Claire. I prefer my targets awake. You passed out cold." She let out a shallow breath, relief washing over her expression. She reached down, grabbing her clutch bag from the floor, her fingers digging inside. "Is everything alright?" I asked. "Fine," she whispered , wrapping the comforter around her. "Just a headache. I need to get to my apartment. I have papers to grade before Monday." "Of course," I whispered, standing up smoothly. I reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear, letting my fingers linger against her skin. "I'll have my driver take you back. We wouldn't want the town's favourite school teacher being late for her civilian life." "Yeah.Yeah sure," she murmured, turning towards the adjoining bathroom to dress. CLAIRE A cup of black coffee sat steaming on the desk, entirely untouched. My head still throbbed with a dull ache from the hangover, but my mind was entirely focused on the terrifying blank spots of the previous night. “Infiltration successful. Spent the night inside the Hilton Estate. No breach of protocol detected. Target remains entirely oblivious to my positioning.” A smug, confident smile touched my lips as I finished the transmission. ------------------------------ The digital intercept on my desk terminal chirped, a single line of decoded text blooming across the black screen. Docile. She actually thought she had fooled me. "Monday it is, little teacher," I murmured to the empty room, a wicked, lethal smile spreading across my face. CLAIRE Every time a car rumbled past the courtyard windows, my chest tightened, expecting to see the heavy line of his dark SUV idling in the drop-off lane. "Earth to Claire. Are you planning on eating that apple, or just staring it to death?" I blinked, the bustling noise of the faculty breakroom slamming back into focus. Sarah was sitting across from me , a smirk playing on her lips as she unwrapped a sandwich. "Sorry," I murmured, forcing a small smile as I took a sip of my lukewarm coffee. "Just thinking about the curriculum." "Right. The curriculum," Sarah mocked gently, leaning forward, "Because I'm sure your sudden distraction has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that this school just hired the most ridiculously attractive human being alive." My fingers froze against my coffee mug. "What are you talking about?" "The new janitor," Sarah purred, her eyes wide with genuine excitement. "He started this morning. Claire, I am not kidding. He looks like he belongs on a runway, not mopping the third-floor hallway. He’s got this mysterious, quiet vibe, dark hair, and arms that could lift a vending machine. Half the math department has already invented a reason to spill their coffee just to see him clean it up." I forced a soft, casual laugh, rolling my eyes to match her energy. "Sarah, he’s a janitor. Let the poor man do his job." "Oh, just wait until you see him," she giggled, leaning back. "His name is Max. He's quiet, though. Barely says two words to anyone. But trust me, with a face like that, he doesn't need a personality." Sarah and I walked out of the heavy double doors together, heading down the concrete steps towards the faculty parking lot. The afternoon air was crisp, the sky a dull, flat grey. "Oh, look," Sarah whispered suddenly, violently nudging her elbow straight into my ribs. "Look, look! Right there by the main maintenance garage. That’s him. That’s the cute guy I was telling you about." I casually turned my head, my eyes scanning the side of the brick building. A tall, broad-shouldered man in dark blue janitorial coveralls was rolling a heavy industrial bin toward the garage doors. Slowly, the man turned around to face the parking lot. My breath instantly trapped itself in my lungs. Every muscle in my body locked into solid stone. Max. The sharp, striking jawline. The cold, calculated dark eyes. My face remained a perfectly blank, polite civilian mask for Sarah’s sake, but inside, my mind was violently spinning out of control. "See?" Sarah murmured, entirely oblivious to the sudden shock wave crashing through my chest. "Am I right, or am I right?" "Yeah," I choked out smoothly, forcing my feet to keep moving towards my car. "He’s... definitely not what you expect for a school janitor." My fingers trembled against the screen as I pulled up the encrypted database network, typing in his descriptive markers and the school employment log. The screen blinked, loading the secure clearance file. Asset Identified: Max Evans. Status: Active. Division: Deep Cover Counter-Intelligence. A sharp wave of panic washed down my spine. The agency had been completely dark all morning. Infiltration protocol strictly stated I was the sole operative assigned to the Hilton territory. Why the f**k was Max here? Did the agency send him to spy on me? Were they tracking my movements because I passed out in Levi's bedroom on Saturday night? Before I could even process the thoughts, my phone violently buzzed against my palm. An incoming text message from the agency network flashed across the screen. “Target acquired. Phase Two initiated.”
