Fools

CLAIRE "We’re leaving," he finally commanded, throwing a handful of bills onto the table. The dashboard clock ticked down the agonizing minutes as the quiet luxury of the dining district gave way to the pitch-black, winding roads leading to his property. A sharp, electronic ring shattered the silence. "Speak," Levi muttered, his eyes never leaving the dark road ahead. "Change of plans," he growled. The massive SUV veered hard to the right, tires screeching as he pulled onto the gravel of a desolate, unlit stretch of highway—miles away from his estate. "Get out, Claire," he ordered coldly. "What? Levi, it's pitch black out here—" "I don't have time for this," he snapped, his rouge eyes flashing with a lethal glare. "My driver will be here in ten minutes to pick you up. Stay on the shoulder. Don't move." The SUV roared to life, kicking up a blinding cloud of dust and small rocks as it tore down the highway, its red taillights quickly bleeding into the darkness. I slipped my hand into the hidden lining of my jacket, pulling out a slim, military-grade tracking terminal. A single red dot blinked on the digital grid. He wasn't heading back to the estate as expected. "Let's see what you're hiding, Doctor," I whispered to the empty night. Sprinting through the tree line, I hotwired a parked, rusted sedan outside a nearby diner and shadowed the coordinates. Thirty minutes later, I was crouching in the rafters of an abandoned, cavernous iron foundry at the edge of the docks. The air smelled of rust, stagnant river water, and heavy industrial grease. ----------------------------- Massive wooden crates were being offloaded from a cargo container. One of them had been pried open, revealing the dull, terrifying gleam of illegal, military-grade anti-aircraft weaponry and black-market assault rifles. An iron arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me backwards into the deep shadows of the steel beam.I drove my elbow back hard, but the blow was cleanly caught by a solid, muscular palm. "Is this how you greet all your colleagues, little teacher?" a smooth, infuriatingly familiar voice whispered directly against my ear. The grip loosened just enough for me to twist around. Max was crouching in the shadows beside me. "What the hell are you doing here, Max?" I hissed under my breath, ripping his hand away from my face. "The agency explicitly stated this was my territory. You’re compromising my footprint." "Your footprint?" Max let out a low, cynical chuckle, leaning closer ."Claire, you spent your Saturday night passing out in the target's bedroom and your Thursday night letting him drag you out on a romantic date. If I hadn't stepped in at the school, you'd probably be playing house with him by now." "It's called deep-cover infiltration, you arrogant bastard," I snapped back."I had Levi exactly where I wanted him until you showed up with a recycling bin and a savior complex." "Yeah? Well, your deep cover is missing the bigger picture," Max countered, his dark eyes narrowing as he pointed down toward the warehouse floor. "Look at those crates. That's a Tier-1 illegal arms shipment. Levi Hilton isn't just a wealthy elite with a bad attitude—he's anchoring a black-market supply line that could arm a small militia. The agency sent me because they knew you were getting too close to the flame to see the fire." "I am completely fine—" "Right. Which is why you're standing on an unreinforced steel beam, arguing with me while two sentries are walking directly beneath us." I froze. Below us, the heavy clinking of tactical boots echoed against the concrete. Two of Levi's heavily armed guards had stopped right beneath our catwalk, their flashlights cutting wide, sweeping arcs through the darkness. One of the beams flicked upward, illuminating the rusted iron columns just three feet to our left. "Hear anything?" one of the guards grunted below. "Just the rats," the second one replied. "Let's finish checking the perimeter before Hilton gets back. If he finds a single breach, we're dead men." We remained completely frozen until the heavy footsteps finally faded down the southern corridor. I exhaled slowly, realizing Max's arm was still pinned securely over my waist. I swatted it away, glaring at him through the gloom. "We're going to get caught because you can't keep your mouth shut." "Me?" Max raised an eyebrow, a slow, wicked smirk playing on his lips despite the near-miss. "You're the one whose heart is beating loud enough to wake the dead, Claire. Now, are we going to keep bickering, or are we going to figure out how Phase Two fits into this?" LEVI I tapped the screen, pulling up the live telemetric link to the thermal imaging drone idling high above the shipping yards. "Got you, little teacher," I murmured to the empty space , a slow smile cutting across my face. She was fast. I’ll give her that. She had bypassed my driver, hotwired a civilian vehicle, and tracked my micro-RF transmitter to the docks in under thirty minutes. She truly believed that pathetic little tracking chip she slipped into my collar at dinner was a tactical victory. But as the drone's infrared camera adjusted its contrast, a second thermal bloom slowly materialized right beside her in the rafters. They were pressed tight against the steel beams, their body heat bleeding together into a single, sharp silhouette. "Well, look at that," I whispered. "Another one joins the party." I tapped the console, patching directly into the earpieces of my two guards on the floor. "Stand down," I commanded coldly into the mic. "Ignore the rafters. Finish checking the manifest on the southern crates and clear out. Let our guests think they’re invisible." "Copy that, Boss," the guard's muffled voice replied. I hit the accelerator, the massive SUV roaring as I neared the outer gates of the shipping yard. It was time to give the little teacher and her partner exactly what they came to see. "Pathetic fools," I breathed, watching them adjust their positions on the digital layout.
