Chapter 17Theo, truly exhausted, headache worse, made his way back to his tower through melancholy dollops of rain well after the Library’s closing time. The thunder had mostly gone, but the clouds were letting out their emotions in random bursts of wet. Theo’s boots did have a mud-repelling charm, but not a strong one, and he was too tired to do much reinforcing. One foot in front of the other. He could do that. He did feel accomplished, in a damp and enervated way. He’d got everything ready for the upcoming student demonstration, which meant that at least he was doing his job, which meant he might temporarily keep his job, assuming that satisfied the Headmistress. The Library was locked up and clean and tidy—he’d stayed late, and had walked through the stacks and corridors and archways
