Henry supposed that possibility wasn’t entirely unrealistic. On the more probable side of things, however, he’d likely been caught in an illusion. A very accurate and specific illusion of that godforsaken brothel in France. To test his theory, Henry reached out to take hold of the doorknob and, sure enough, it rippled beneath his touch. The illusionist casting the spell no doubt had counted on Henry not being able to see through it—not without using magic, which he’d proved he wouldn’t when he hadn’t used it to track down whoever’d sent him the rose petals. What they hadn’t expected was the magic he shared with Theo, and this worked to his advantage. Let them believe he’d be trapped helplessly in this illusion. Play the weak and hapless victim.
