I immediately rush to catch him, barely supporting his weight as Amara hurries to help me. “Get him on the couch,” I say, urgency threading through my voice. Layton’s face is ashen, his breaths shallow and strained, and his eyes flutter, caught between consciousness and darkness. “This is all my fault,” Selene whispers, panic seeping through her words. “He told me to let go if it was too much, but I… I didn’t.” Her voice trembles, and her eyes begin to fill with tears. “I can feel the pain he’s in.
