The Betrayer's Gambit

The car screeched to a halt in a forest clearing. Vance jumped out, his Sig still in his hand. His team followed, scanning the trees for threats. The night was dark, silent. "We need to find a new safe house," Echo said. "Somewhere your father doesn't know about." "There's no such place. He built the Phoenix. He knows every safe house, every contact, every asset we have." "Then we go off-grid. Completely. No phones, no computers, no trace." Vance nodded. "Do it." --- They walked through the forest for hours. The terrain was rough, the darkness absolute. Vance led the way, his instincts guiding him. Hawk was on his flank, Flint covering the rear. Echo and Kai were in the middle, their laptops dark. "We need to find shelter," Hawk said. "Dawn is coming, and we're exposed." "There's a cave up ahead. I saw it on the satellite images before we left." They reached the cave as the sun began to rise. It was small, shallow, but it offered protection from the elements. Vance sat against the wall, his eyes closed. His body was exhausted, but his mind wouldn't stop. His father. The Phoenix. The betrayal. Echo sat beside him. "Vance, we need to talk." "About what?" "About your father. About what happens next." "I don't know what happens next. I don't know if I can trust anything anymore." "You can trust us. Your team. Your family." Vance looked at her. "Thank you, Echo." "We're in this together." --- The days passed slowly. They stayed in the cave, hidden from the Phoenix's network. Echo worked on her laptop, trying to find a way to penetrate the Phoenix's communications. Kai searched for safe houses, contacts, allies. Vance sat at the entrance, watching the forest. His father was out there. Planning. Building. Preparing. And Vance had to stop him. "I found something," Echo said. "A weakness in the Phoenix's network. A backdoor that wasn't properly secured." "Can you use it?" "I can. But I need access to a terminal. A Phoenix terminal." "Then we find one." --- The search took three days. Echo traced the backdoor to a facility in the Swiss Alps. A small research station, used by the Phoenix for communications. "We go in at night," Vance said. "Hit the facility, get the data, get out." Hawk checked his rifle. "Security?" "Minimal. They're not expecting anyone." "That's what they said last time." "Last time we didn't have a backdoor." --- The facility was a small building, nestled in the mountains. Vance approached through the snow, his team behind him. The building was dark, silent. "Echo, give me the layout." "One floor. The communications room is in the center. One guard on duty." "One guard? That's it?" "Like I said, they're not expecting anyone." Vance moved to the door, picked the lock. They slipped inside. The guard was at the end of the hall, his back turned. Vance hit him from behind, dragged him into a closet. They reached the communications room. Echo connected her laptop to the terminal. "I'm in," she said. "Downloading everything." "How long?" "Five minutes." "We don't have five minutes." The door exploded inward. Guards poured into the room. Vance fired, Hawk fired, Flint fired. The guards fell, but more kept coming. "We need to go!" Hawk shouted. "Not yet! I need two more minutes!" Vance fought through the chaos, his Sig blazing. He reached the door, held off the guards. "Done!" Echo shouted. "Move!" They ran. Through the corridor, out the back door, into the snow. The guards followed. Vance fired, keeping their heads down. They reached the car, piled in. Flint started the engine. The car screeched away, bullets pinging off the rear. Vance collapsed in the back, his chest heaving. "Did you get it?" he asked. "I got it," Echo said. "Everything. The Phoenix's entire network." "Then we can stop them." "Not yet. The network is protected by a kill switch. If we try to shut it down, it'll self-destruct." "Then we disable the kill switch." "That's the problem. The kill switch is in your father's personal terminal. The one he carries with him." Vance's blood went cold. "We need to get to my father." "We can't. He's protected. He's always surrounded by guards." "Then we find a way." --- The flight back to the safe house was silent. Vance sat in the back, his mind racing. His father. The kill switch. The endgame. Echo was beside him. "Vance, I need to tell you something." "What?" "When I was in the facility, I found something else. A message from your father. To Nyx." "What does it say?" Echo pulled up the message on her laptop. It was brief. *The Phoenix is ready. Initiate the final phase. My son will understand, or he will be dealt with.* Vance stared at the screen. His father. Planning to deal with him. "He's going to kill me," Vance said. "If I don't join him, he's going to kill me." "It looks that way." "Then we stop him first." --- They landed at a private airstrip. A car was waiting. They drove to a new safe house, a cabin in the Canadian wilderness. Off-grid, no records. Vance set up a command center in the main room. Echo connected her laptop to the cabin's systems. "Echo, I need you to find my father. I need to know where he is." "I'll try. But he's careful. He doesn't leave traces." "Then find the traces he doesn't know he's leaving." --- The days passed slowly. Vance worked with Echo, tracking his father's movements. They found fragments, pieces of a larger puzzle. "I found something," Echo said. "A meeting. Your father is meeting with the Phoenix's leaders in three days. A summit in Dubai." "That's where they'll all be." Vance stood up. "We go to Dubai. We take them all out." Hawk stepped forward. "Vance, think about this. We're talking about the most powerful people in the world. They'll have an army." "Then we bring an army too." "What army? We're a handful of people. We can't match their resources." "Then we don't match their resources. We match their cunning." Vance looked at his team. "We're going to Dubai. We're going to the summit. And we're going to end this." --- The flight to Dubai took fourteen hours. Vance sat in the back of the plane, his mind racing. The summit. The leaders. The end. His father was at the center of it all. Echo was beside him. "Vance, I need to ask you something." "What?" "If it comes down to it. If you have to choose between stopping the Phoenix and saving your father... what will you do?" Vance was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke. "I'll do what I have to do." --- The summit was at a private resort on the Palm Jumeirah. Vance approached through the shadows, his team behind him. The resort was heavily guarded, but they had a plan. "Echo, give me the layout." "The summit is in the main ballroom. Your father will be there, along with the Phoenix's leaders." "Then we hit them fast." They breached the resort through the service entrance. The fighting was fierce, but brief. Vance reached the ballroom, kicked the doors open. His father was at the center of the room, surrounded by the Phoenix's leaders. "Vance. I knew you'd come." "Then you know why I'm here." "I know you want to stop me. I know you think you can win." "I don't think. I know." Vance raised his Sig. His father smiled. "You're too late. The Phoenix is already in motion." "I don't care." Vance pulled the trigger.
