The Dubai resort was a battlefield.
Vance stood in the center of the ballroom, his Sig still smoking. The Omega Initiative's leaders lay scattered around him—dead, wounded, or unconscious. The table where they'd been plotting global domination was splintered, the documents scattered like confetti.
Echo was at the command console, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "I'm downloading everything. Communications, financial records, future plans. This is everything."
"Get it all. We need to know who else is out there."
Kai was at the side door, his laptop connected to the resort's network. "I'm seeing signals. The remnants are scattering. They know we hit them."
"Let them scatter. We'll find them."
Flint walked over, his face grim. "We have a problem. The security team is mobilizing. We have maybe five minutes before they're here."
"Then we leave in four."
Vance moved through the room, gathering documents. His father's face was on one of them—a photograph from years ago. A younger Elias, standing with the Omega Initiative's founders.
He pocketed the photograph.
"Vance, we need to go," Echo said.
"Let's move."
---
They retreated through the service entrance, into the night.
The resort was in chaos. Security teams were scrambling, guests were fleeing. Vance and his team slipped through the shadows, reaching the dock where a boat was waiting.
They climbed in. Flint started the engine. The boat pulled away from the island.
Vance watched the resort disappear in the distance. The lights of Dubai glittered on the horizon.
"We did it," Echo said. "We stopped the Omega Initiative."
"Did we?" Vance looked at the photograph in his hand. "These people had been planning this for decades. They don't just disappear because we killed a few of them."
"Then we find the rest."
Vance nodded. "We find the rest."
---
The flight back to the safe house was long and quiet.
Vance sat in the back, the photograph in his hand. His father's face stared back at him. A younger man, ambitious, idealistic. A man who had believed he was building something important.
Echo sat beside him. "Vance, are you okay?"
"I don't know. I keep finding out new things about my father. Things that make me question everything."
"He was trying to do the right thing."
"Was he? Or was he just trying to protect himself?"
Echo was silent. She didn't have an answer.
Vance put the photograph away. "I need to talk to him. When we get back."
"I understand."
---
The safe house was quiet when they arrived.
Vance walked inside, his parents waiting. His mother was in the kitchen, his father in the command center.
"Dad, we need to talk."
Elias looked up. His face was pale, tired.
"About what?"
"About the Omega Initiative. About your role in it."
Elias was silent for a moment. Then he spoke.
"I was a founder. I helped create the infrastructure. I thought I was building a better world."
"And now?"
"Now I know I was wrong. I was a fool."
Vance sat down across from him. "Dad, why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was ashamed. I didn't want you to know what I'd done."
"But I needed to know. I needed to understand."
Elias nodded slowly. "I know. And I'm sorry."
Vance was silent. Then he spoke.
"I forgive you, Dad."
Elias looked up, his eyes filled with tears. "Thank you, Vance. Thank you."
---
The days passed slowly.
Vance worked with Echo, analyzing the data from the Dubai resort. They found names, locations, communications. The Omega Initiative was vast, but it had been decapitated.
"We've taken out most of their leadership," Echo said. "But there are still remnants out there. Cells in Europe, Asia, South America."
"Then we find them. We stop them."
"And then?"
Vance looked at her. "Then we rest. We rebuild. We move on."
Echo smiled. "That sounds good."
---
The first cell was in Berlin.
Vance and his team moved through the city, silent and fast. The cell was operating out of a warehouse in the industrial district.
They breached the warehouse at dawn. The fighting was brief. The cell was small, poorly armed.
Vance stood in the center of the warehouse, his Sig smoking. The remnants were on the ground, bound and unconscious.
"Is that all of them?" Hawk asked.
"Echo's checking the records. There's one more cell. In Tokyo."
"Then we go to Tokyo."
---
The Tokyo cell was harder.
They were embedded in a corporate office, using legitimate business as cover. Vance and his team infiltrated at night.
The fighting was fierce, but they prevailed.
Vance stood in the command center, the cell's leader at his feet.
"Where are the others?" Vance asked.
"I'm the last one," the man said. "There's no one else."
"You're lying."
"I'm not. The Omega Initiative is finished. You won."
Vance studied him. The man was telling the truth.
"Then it's over," Vance said.
"For now."
---
They flew back to the safe house.
Vance sat in the back of the plane, his eyes closed. The war was over. The Omega Initiative was in ruins.
But he knew it was never really over. There would always be another threat, another conspiracy.
He was tired. So tired.
Echo sat beside him. "Vance, you need to rest."
"I can't rest. Not yet."
"You've done enough. You've saved the world."
"Have I? Or have I just delayed the inevitable?"
Echo took his hand. "You've made a difference. That's what matters."
Vance looked at her. "Thank you, Echo."
"Don't thank me. Just promise me you'll rest."
"I promise."
---
They landed at the safe house at dawn.
Vance walked inside, his parents waiting. His mother hugged him. His father stood in the corner, his face pale.
"Vance, you're back," his mother said.
"I'm back, Mom."
"Did you find what you were looking for?"
"I found the remnants. They're gone. The Omega Initiative is finished."
His mother hugged him tighter. "I'm so proud of you."
Vance looked at his father. "Dad, I need to talk to you."
Elias nodded. "I know."
---
They sat in the command center.
"Dad, I've been thinking about what you said. About the Omega Initiative. About your role in it."
Elias nodded slowly. "I know I made mistakes. I know I hurt people. But I was trying to do the right thing."
"I believe you."
"Thank you."
"But I need you to understand something. I'm not going to let the past define me. I'm not going to let your mistakes define me."
Elias looked at him. "I understand."
"I'm going to move on. I'm going to build something new. Something better."
Elias nodded. "That's all I ever wanted for you."
---
Vance walked to the window. The sun was rising over the mountains.
His family was safe. His team was alive. The war was over.
For now.
But he knew there would always be another battle. Another fight.
And he would be ready.
