The New Beginning

610 Words
The cabin was quiet for the first time in months. Vance stood on the porch, watching the sun rise over the mountains. The sky was painted in shades of orange and pink. The air was cold, clean. His mother was inside, making breakfast. His father was in the command center, monitoring the screens. The team was scattered around the cabin, resting, healing. The war was over. But Vance couldn't shake the feeling that something was coming. Echo walked out, joined him. "You're up early." "I couldn't sleep." "Same." She stood beside him, watching the sunrise. "It's beautiful." "It is." "Vance, I've been thinking. About what comes next." "And what comes next?" "I don't know. But I know I don't want to keep fighting forever." Vance looked at her. "Neither do I." "Then what do we do?" "We build something. A new life. A new purpose." Echo smiled. "That sounds good." --- The days passed slowly. Vance worked with his father, going through the files from the Omega Initiative. They found evidence of corruption, conspiracy, and crime. They handed it over to the authorities. The world was slowly healing. The power grids were restored. The governments were stabilizing. The chaos was fading. Vance watched it all from a distance. He was tired. So tired. His mother walked in, a cup of coffee in her hand. "Vance, you've been staring at that screen for hours. You need to rest." "I can't rest, Mom. Not yet." "You've done enough. You've saved the world." "Have I? Or have I just delayed the inevitable?" His mother sat beside him. "Vance, I know you've been through a lot. We all have. But you can't keep carrying this burden alone." "I'm not alone. I have you. I have the team." "Then let us help you." Vance looked at her. "I don't know how." "You start by trusting us. By letting us in." Vance was silent. Then he spoke. "I'll try." --- The team gathered in the main room. Vance stood at the center, his family around him. Hawk, Flint, Echo, Kai. His mother and father. "I want to thank all of you," he said. "For everything. For risking your lives, for standing by me, for believing in me." Hawk nodded. "We're a team. That's what we do." "Then I want to ask you something. I want to keep this team together. I want to keep fighting for what's right." Flint raised an eyebrow. "Against what?" "Against whatever comes next. There will always be threats. There will always be people who want to destroy what we've built. I want to be ready for them." Echo stepped forward. "Then we're with you." "All of us," Kai said. Vance looked at his team. His family. "Then let's get started." --- The months passed. Vance and his team worked together, building a network of allies and informants. They tracked threats, exposed conspiracies, and protected the innocent. They were a shadow force, operating outside the system. They answered to no one but themselves. Vance stood in the command center, watching the monitors. The world was still chaotic, still dangerous. But they were making a difference. Echo walked in. "We have a lead. A new threat emerging in Eastern Europe." "Then we go to Eastern Europe." "Vance, you need to rest. You've been working nonstop." "I can rest when I'm dead." Echo shook her head. "You're impossible." "I know." She smiled. "That's why I love you." Vance looked at her. "What?" "I said that's why I love you." Vance was silent for a moment. Then he spoke. "I love you too, Echo." She walked over, kissed him. "Then let's go save the world."
