The safe house in Prague was a crumbling apartment above a butcher shop.
Vance stood at the window, watching the street below. The city was beautiful, medieval, steeped in history. But history had a way of repeating itself. And right now, history was brewing something ugly.
Echo was at the table, her laptop open. "I've been tracking the signals. They're coming from a facility outside the city. An old Soviet bunker, retrofitted with modern technology."
"Who's running it?"
"A man named Viktor Volkov. Former KGB, turned oligarch. He's been building a network of operatives across Eastern Europe. He's connected to the Omega Initiative remnants."
"Then we take him out."
Hawk walked in, his rifle over his shoulder. "I've been watching the facility. Heavy security, but there's a blind spot on the north side. We can get in through there."
"Then that's our entry point."
---
The night was cold, the sky clear.
Vance moved through the forest, his team behind him. The bunker was a concrete structure, built into the hillside. Lights blazed from its windows.
"Echo, give me the layout."
"One level below ground. The command center is in the center. Security is heavy, but they're not expecting us."
"Then we hit them fast."
They breached the bunker through the north side. The fighting was fierce, but brief. The guards were caught off guard.
Vance reached the command center. A man was standing at the console, his back to the door.
"Mr. Volkov. I presume."
Volkov turned. He was tall, gray-haired, with cold eyes.
"Mr. Cole. I've been expecting you."
"Then you know why I'm here."
"I know you want to stop me. I know you think you can win."
"I don't think. I know."
Vance raised his Sig. Volkov smiled.
"You're too late. The Omega Initiative is already in motion."
"I don't care."
Vance fired. The bullet hit Volkov in the shoulder. He went down.
"Where are the remnants?" Vance asked.
Volkov laughed. "You'll never find them."
"Then I'll kill you."
"Go ahead. I'm dead either way."
Vance pulled the trigger.
---
They searched the bunker, but found nothing.
"No files, no records, no communications," Echo said. "He wiped everything before we got here."
"Then we find another way."
"There is no other way. The remnants are gone. We lost them."
Vance was silent. Then he spoke.
"We didn't lose them. They're still out there. We just need to find them."
"And how do we do that?"
"We follow the money. The Omega Initiative had billions in assets. Someone is managing those assets."
Echo nodded slowly. "I can trace the financial transactions. It'll take time."
"We have time."
---
The days passed slowly.
Vance worked with Echo, tracing the financial transactions. They found patterns, connections, and leads.
"I found something," Echo said. "A shell company in the Cayman Islands. It's been receiving payments from the Omega Initiative's accounts."
"Who's running it?"
"A woman named Nyx."
Vance's blood went cold. "Nyx? She's dead."
"She's not dead. She's been hiding in the Caribbean. She's been managing the Omega Initiative's assets."
"Then we go to the Caribbean."
---
The flight to the Caribbean took eight hours.
Vance sat in the back of the plane, his mind churning. Nyx. Alive. Managing the Omega Initiative's assets.
Hawk was beside him. "This is a trap."
"I know."
"Then why are you going?"
"Because Nyx has the answers. And I need those answers."
The plane landed on a small island. A boat was waiting.
Vance and his team crossed the water, reaching a private villa. The villa was opulent, surrounded by palm trees and white sand.
"Echo, give me the layout."
"One floor. The main room is in the center. Security is light—she's not expecting us."
"Then we hit her fast."
---
They breached the villa through the front door.
Nyx was waiting. She was sitting in a chair, a glass of wine in her hand.
"Mr. Cole. I was wondering when you'd arrive."
"Then you know why I'm here."
"I know you want the Omega Initiative's assets. I know you want to stop the remnants."
"Then give me what I want."
Nyx smiled. "I'll give you the assets. But I want something in return."
"What?"
"Protection. The remnants are hunting me. They want to silence me before I talk."
"Then talk."
Nyx reached into her pocket. Vance tensed. She pulled out a small drive.
"Everything is on here. Names, locations, communications. The remnants' entire network."
Vance took the drive. "Why are you helping me?"
"Because the remnants are going to fail. And I want to be on the winning side."
---
Vance walked out of the villa, the drive in his hand.
His team was waiting.
"Did you get it?" Hawk asked.
"I got it."
"Then let's go."
---
They flew back to the safe house.
Vance sat in the command center, analyzing the data on the drive. The remnants' network was vast, sprawling, and deeply embedded.
"We can take them all out," Echo said. "One by one."
"It'll take years."
"Then we take years."
Vance shook his head. "We don't have years. The remnants are still active. They're still planning."
"Then we hit them fast. Hit them hard."
Vance looked at the list. Dozens of names. Dozens of locations.
"Let's start with the leaders," he said. "The ones at the top."
---
The next three months were a blur of operations.
Vance and his team moved across the globe, hitting remnants' safe houses, taking down leaders, destroying networks. Each mission was a success. Each mission brought them closer to victory.
But each mission also took a toll.
Hawk was wounded in a firefight in Moscow. Flint was nearly killed in a car bomb in London. Echo was captured in Paris and barely escaped.
Vance was exhausted. His body was battered. His mind was frayed.
But he couldn't stop. Not until it was over.
---
They returned to the safe house after the Paris mission.
Vance collapsed into a chair, his eyes closed. His mother was at his side, tending to his wounds.
"Vance, you need to rest," she said.
"I can't rest. Not yet."
"Then at least let me help you."
She cleaned his wounds, bandaged them. He winced but didn't complain.
His father walked in, his face pale. "Vance, I need to talk to you."
"About what?"
"About the remnants. I found something in the files. Something you need to see."
"What?"
"The remnants aren't just remnants. They're a new organization. They're calling themselves the Phoenix."
Vance's blood went cold. "The Phoenix?"
"They're rebuilding the Omega Initiative from the ashes. They're stronger than ever."
Vance stood up. "Then we need to stop them."
"Vance, you can't. You're exhausted."
"I don't have a choice."
---
The flight to the Phoenix's headquarters took ten hours.
Vance sat in the back of the plane, his eyes closed. His body was screaming for rest, but his mind was focused.
He had one mission now.
Stop the Phoenix. End this war.
The plane landed at a private airstrip outside the city. Vance and his team moved through the night, toward the headquarters.
The headquarters was a skyscraper in the heart of the city. Vance approached through the shadows, his team behind him.
"Echo, give me the layout."
"Fifty floors. The command center is on the top floor. Security is heavy."
"Then we take the stairs."
---
They fought their way up the skyscraper.
Vance led the way, his Sig blazing. Hawk and Flint covered the flanks. Echo and Kai were at the command console, uploading kill codes.
They reached the top floor. The command center was in the center.
Vance kicked the door open.
A man was standing at the console, his back to the door.
"Mr. Cole. I've been expecting you."
"Then you know why I'm here."
"I know you want to stop the Phoenix. I know you think you can win."
"I don't think. I know."
The man turned. It was Soren.
"Soren? You're the leader of the Phoenix?"
"I'm the leader. I've been building this organization for years. The Omega Initiative was just the beginning."
Vance raised his Sig. "Then I'm going to kill you."
"Go ahead. But if you do, you'll never find the truth."
"What truth?"
"The truth about your father. He wasn't just a founder of the Omega Initiative. He was the one who started the Phoenix."
