The skyscraper's top floor was silent.
Vance stood frozen, his Sig still trained on Soren. The words echoed in his mind. *Your father started the Phoenix.*
"That's a lie," Vance said.
"Is it? Ask your father. Ask him about the Phoenix Initiative. Ask him about the real plan."
Vance's hand shook. His left hand. The nerve damage.
"Dad wouldn't do that. He was trying to stop the Omega Initiative."
"He was trying to stop them because they betrayed him. He was the founder of the Phoenix. He created it as a backup. If the Omega Initiative failed, the Phoenix would rise."
Vance's blood went cold. His father. The founder of the Phoenix.
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because I want you to understand. Your father isn't the victim you think he is. He's a mastermind. He's been playing everyone—you, the Collective, the Omega Initiative—from the beginning."
"You're lying."
"I'm not. And I can prove it."
Soren reached into his pocket. Vance tensed. Soren pulled out a small drive.
"Everything is on here. Your father's communications, his plans, his records. He built the Phoenix years ago. He's been running it from the shadows."
Vance took the drive. His hands were shaking.
"If this is true," he said, "then everything I believed was a lie."
"It's true. And now you have to decide what to do with it."
---
Vance walked out of the skyscraper, the drive in his hand.
His team was waiting. Hawk, Flint, Echo, Kai. Their faces were pale.
"We heard everything," Echo said. "Through the comms."
"Then you know what I have to do."
"Vance, you can't just confront your father without proof."
"I have proof. Soren gave it to me."
"Or he gave you a lie. Soren is a master manipulator. He's been playing both sides for years."
Vance looked at the drive. She was right. Soren couldn't be trusted.
"Then we verify it. Echo, I need you to analyze the drive. I need to know if it's real."
"I'll get started."
---
The flight back to the safe house was tense.
Vance sat in the back, the drive in his pocket. His mind was churning. His father. The Phoenix. The lies.
Echo was beside him, her laptop open. "I've been analyzing the data. It's extensive. Communications, financial records, planning documents. If it's fake, it's an incredibly elaborate fake."
"Is it real?"
"I don't know yet. But there's a lot of detail. Details that only someone inside the Phoenix would know."
Vance closed his eyes. His father. The mastermind.
"Vance, I need to ask you something," Echo said.
"What?"
"If it's true. If your father really is the founder of the Phoenix... what are you going to do?"
"I don't know. I don't know if I can trust anything anymore."
---
They arrived at the safe house at dawn.
Vance walked inside, his parents waiting. His mother was in the kitchen, his father in the command center.
"Dad, we need to talk."
Elias looked up. His face was pale, tired.
"About what?"
"About the Phoenix. About your role in it."
Elias's face went still. "The Phoenix?"
"Soren gave me a drive. It has records of your communications. Your plans. You founded the Phoenix, didn't you?"
Elias was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke.
"Yes. I did."
Vance's heart sank. "Why? Why would you do that?"
"Because the Omega Initiative was flawed. I knew it would fail. So I created a backup. A contingency plan."
"You created a whole organization. A secret organization."
"I was trying to save the world. I was trying to build something better."
"You were building an empire. A power base."
Elias shook his head. "No. I was building a failsafe. If the Omega Initiative succeeded, the Phoenix would be there to stop them. If it failed, the Phoenix would be there to pick up the pieces."
Vance stared at his father. "Dad, I don't know what to believe anymore."
"Believe this: I love you. I've always loved you. Everything I did was to protect you."
"By lying to me? By manipulating me?"
"I didn't have a choice. I was trying to keep you safe."
Vance was silent. Then he spoke.
"I don't forgive you, Dad. Not yet. But I understand."
Elias nodded slowly. "That's all I ask."
---
Vance walked to the window. The sun was rising over the mountains.
His father. The founder of the Phoenix. The master of lies.
He didn't know what to do.
Echo walked in. "Vance, I need to show you something."
"What?"
"I analyzed the drive. The data is real. But there's more. There's a message. From your father to Soren."
"What does it say?"
Echo pulled up the message on her laptop. It was brief.
*Soren. The Omega Initiative is failing. Activate the Phoenix. Protect my son. He's the only one who can stop them.*
Vance stared at the screen. His father. Trying to protect him.
"He was trying to protect me," Vance said. "All along."
"It looks that way."
Vance walked to his father, hugged him. "Dad, I'm sorry. I didn't understand."
Elias hugged him back. "It's okay, Vance. It's okay."
---
The days passed slowly.
Vance worked with his father, going through the Phoenix's files. They found evidence of the organization's plans, its members, its strategies.
"We need to take control of the Phoenix," Vance said. "We need to use it to stop the remnants."
"Are you sure?" Elias asked.
"I'm sure. It's the only way."
Elias nodded slowly. "Then I'll help you."
---
The next few months were a blur of operations.
Vance and his team worked with his father, taking control of the Phoenix's network. They used it to track down remnants, expose conspiracies, and protect the innocent.
The world was slowly healing. The chaos was fading.
Vance stood in the command center, watching the monitors. His father was beside him.
"Dad, I want to thank you."
"For what?"
"For everything. For protecting me. For building the Phoenix. For giving me the tools to fight."
Elias smiled. "You're welcome, Vance."
