The Hunt

The Phoenix network was vast. Vance stood in the command center, staring at the screens. His father had built an organization that spanned the globe. Operatives in every country, assets in every sector, information on every threat. And now it was his to command. Echo walked in, her laptop open. "I've been going through the Phoenix's files. There's a lot here. More than we ever imagined." "Like what?" "Like a list of the Omega Initiative's remaining operatives. Dozens of them, scattered across the world." "Then we find them. We take them out." "That's going to take time." "We have time." --- The hunt began. Vance and his team moved across the globe, using the Phoenix's network to track down the Omega Initiative's remnants. They found them in safe houses, in corporate offices, in government buildings. Each mission was a success. Each mission brought them closer to peace. Hawk was in Berlin, taking down a cell of operatives. Flint was in Tokyo, neutralizing a financier. Echo was in London, gathering intelligence. Vance was in Moscow, tracking a target. The target was a man named Ivan Petrov. Former KGB, turned oligarch. He'd been funding the Omega Initiative's remnants for years. Vance followed him through the streets of Moscow. The city was cold, gray, filled with shadows. Petrov entered a building. Vance followed. The building was an old Soviet-era apartment block. Vance climbed the stairs, his Sig in hand. Petrov's apartment was on the fifth floor. Vance kicked the door open. Petrov was waiting. He was sitting in a chair, a glass of vodka in his hand. "Mr. Cole. I've been expecting you." "Then you know why I'm here." "I know you want to kill me. I know you think it will stop the Omega Initiative." "Won't it?" "No. The Omega Initiative is dead. What's left is something else. Something new." "What?" "The Phoenix. Your father's organization. It's been rebuilding the network, strengthening the infrastructure. It's more powerful than ever." Vance's blood went cold. "The Phoenix isn't rebuilding the Omega Initiative. It's stopping it." "Is it? Ask your father. Ask him about the Phoenix's real purpose." Vance raised his Sig. "You're lying." "I'm not. And I can prove it." Petrov reached into his pocket. Vance tensed. Petrov pulled out a small drive. "Everything is on here. Your father's communications, his plans, his records. He's been building the Phoenix into a global power. He's not stopping the Omega Initiative. He's replacing it." Vance took the drive. His hands were shaking. "If this is true," he said, "then everything I believed was a lie." "It's true. And now you have to decide what to do with it." --- Vance walked out of the apartment, the drive in his hand. His team was waiting outside. Hawk, Flint, Echo, Kai. Their faces were pale. "We heard everything," Echo said. "Through the comms." "Then you know what I have to do." "Vance, you can't just confront your father without proof." "I have proof. Petrov gave it to me." "Or he gave you a lie. Petrov is a former KGB officer. He's been playing both sides for years." Vance looked at the drive. She was right. Petrov couldn't be trusted. "Then we verify it. Echo, I need you to analyze the drive. I need to know if it's real." "I'll get started." --- The flight back to the safe house was tense. Vance sat in the back, the drive in his pocket. His mind was churning. His father. The Phoenix. The lies. Echo was beside him, her laptop open. "I've been analyzing the data. It's extensive. Communications, financial records, planning documents. If it's fake, it's an incredibly elaborate fake." "Is it real?" "I don't know yet. But there's a lot of detail. Details that only someone inside the Phoenix would know." Vance closed his eyes. His father. The mastermind. "Vance, I need to ask you something," Echo said. "What?" "If it's true. If your father really is building the Phoenix into a global power... what are you going to do?" "I don't know. I don't know if I can trust anything anymore." --- They arrived at the safe house at dawn. Vance walked inside, his parents waiting. His mother was in the kitchen, his father in the command center. "Dad, we need to talk." Elias looked up. His face was pale, tired. "About what?" "About the Phoenix. About your real purpose." Elias's face went still. "What do you mean?" "Petrov gave me a drive. It has records of your communications. Your plans. You're building the Phoenix into a global power, aren't you?" Elias was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke. "Yes. I am." Vance's heart sank. "Why? Why would you do that?" "Because the world needs order. The Omega Initiative was chaos. The Phoenix is order." "You're becoming what you fought against." Elias shook his head. "No. I'm becoming what the world needs. A leader. A protector." "You're building an empire." "I'm building a future. A future where no one has to suffer the way we did." Vance stared at his father. "Dad, I don't know what to believe anymore." "Believe this: I love you. I've always loved you. Everything I did was to protect you." "By lying to me? By manipulating me?" "I didn't have a choice. I was trying to keep you safe." Vance was silent. Then he spoke. "I don't forgive you, Dad. Not yet. But I understand." Elias nodded slowly. "That's all I ask." --- Vance walked to the window. The sun was rising over the mountains. His father. The builder of empires. The master of lies. He didn't know what to do. Echo walked in. "Vance, I need to show you something." "What?" "I analyzed the drive. The data is real. But there's more. There's a message. From your father to the Phoenix's operatives." "What does it say?" Echo pulled up the message on her laptop. It was brief. *The Omega Initiative is dead. Long live the Phoenix. Prepare for the next phase.* Vance stared at the screen. His father. Planning the next phase. "Dad, what's the next phase?" Elias looked at him. "The consolidation of power. The Phoenix will become the new world order." Vance shook his head. "I can't let that happen." "You don't have a choice. The Phoenix is already in motion." "Then I'll stop it." "You can't. It's too big. Too powerful." "Then I'll find a way." Vance walked out of the command center. His team was waiting. "We have a new mission," he said. "We're going to stop the Phoenix."
