The safe house in the mountains was quiet.
Vance stood at the window, watching the snow fall. It had been two weeks since his escape from the First Order's prison. Two weeks of healing, planning, and waiting.
His daughter was playing in the next room, her laughter echoing through the cabin. His mother was cooking dinner. Echo was at the makeshift command center, monitoring the Sentinel Network's scattered intelligence feeds.
"We have a problem," Echo said.
Vance turned. "What is it?"
"The First Order is making their move. Multiple attacks across the globe. Synchronized. Coordinated."
"When?"
"Forty-eight hours. They're going to hit government buildings, financial centers, and communication hubs simultaneously."
"How many targets?"
"Dozens. We can't stop them all."
"Then we stop the source. Where are they coordinating from?"
Echo pulled up a map. "A command center in the Arctic. It's buried in the ice, completely off-grid. They've been building it for years."
"Then that's where we go."
"Vance, it's a fortress. Heavily guarded, isolated, with no way in except through the front door."
"Then we go through the front door."
---
The flight to the Arctic took ten hours.
Vance sat in the back of the plane, his mind focused. His team was with him—Hawk, Flint, Kai, and Echo. His mother and daughter were safe at the bunker.
"We have a window," Echo said. "The command center's security rotates every six hours. We're hitting them during the shift change."
"That's still a lot of guards," Hawk said.
"It's the best we've got."
The plane landed on a frozen lake. A sled was waiting, powered by a small engine. They crossed the ice, the wind biting at their faces.
The command center was a massive structure, buried in the ice. Only the entrance was visible, a steel door set into the snow.
"Echo, give me the layout."
"One level below ground. The command center is in the center. Security is heavy, but they're not expecting us."
"Then we hit them hard and fast."
---
They breached the entrance through the ice.
The fighting was fierce, but brief. The guards were caught off guard.
Vance reached the command center. The room was filled with figures, dozens of them, sitting at consoles and monitors.
At the center of the room stood Magnus.
"Mr. Cole. I was wondering when you'd arrive."
"Then you know why I'm here."
"I know you want to stop us. I know you think you can win."
"I don't think. I know."
Vance raised his Sig. Magnus smiled.
"You're too late. The First Order is already in motion."
"I don't care."
Vance pulled the trigger.
---
The bullet struck Magnus in the shoulder. He went down, his eyes wide with surprise.
The other members of the First Order scrambled for cover. Vance fired again, taking them out one by one.
Echo was at his side, her pistol blazing. Hawk and Flint covered the exits.
Within minutes, it was over.
Vance stood in the center of the room, his chest heaving.
"We did it," Echo said.
"Not yet. The attacks are still in motion. We need to stop them."
"How?"
"Find the command codes. Shut down the network."
Echo moved to the central console, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "I'm in. I'm initiating a shutdown protocol."
The screen flickered. A warning message appeared.
*Unauthorized access detected. Countermeasures activated.*
The room filled with gas.
"Move!" Vance shouted.
They ran for the exit. The gas was thick, choking. Vance's lungs burned.
They burst through the door, into the fresh air. Hawk was firing, covering their retreat.
"Get to the sled!" Hawk shouted.
They ran. The sled was waiting, the engine running.
They piled in. Flint started the engine.
The sled screeched away, bullets pinging off the rear.
Vance collapsed, his chest heaving.
---
They flew back to the safe house.
Vance sat in the back of the plane, his mind churning. The command center was destroyed. The First Order's network was in chaos.
But the attacks were still in motion.
"Echo, did you get the command codes?"
"I got some of them. I didn't have time to get everything."
"Then we need to go back."
"We can't. The facility is destroyed. There's nothing left."
"Then we find another way."
"There is no other way."
Vance was silent. Then he spoke.
"We didn't lose. We just need to find another way."
---
The days passed slowly.
Vance worked with Echo, analyzing the data they'd recovered. They found fragments, pieces of a larger puzzle.
"I found something," Echo said. "A secondary command center. In the Himalayas."
"Then we go to the Himalayas."
"Vance, the First Order is still out there. They'll be expecting us."
"I don't care. We're going to stop them."
---
The flight to the Himalayas took twelve hours.
Vance sat in the back of the plane, his mind focused. The command center was a fortress, built into the mountain.
They approached through the snow, silent and fast. The entrance was a steel door, set into the rock.
"Echo, give me the layout."
"One level below ground. The command center is in the center. Security is heavy."
"Then we hit them fast."
They breached the entrance. The fighting was fierce, but they prevailed.
Vance reached the command center. The room was empty.
"It's a trap," Hawk said.
"I know."
The door slammed shut behind them. The room filled with gas.
Vance fell to his knees. The world went dark.
---
Vance woke in a cell.
Concrete walls. Steel door. A single light bulb.
He looked around. Echo was in the cell next to him. Hawk across the hall.
"We need to get out of here," he said.
"How?"
"I'm working on it."
Vance examined the door. Steel, reinforced. A biometric lock.
"We need a handprint," he said.
"Whose?"
"Someone with access."
The door opened. A figure walked in.
Magnus.
"Mr. Cole. I was wondering when you'd wake up."
"Then you know why I'm here."
"I know you want to stop me. I know you think you can win."
"I don't think. I know."
Vance lunged. Magnus was fast, dodging the attack.
"Guards!"
Vance was grabbed, thrown against the wall.
"Keep him here," Magnus said. "He's not going anywhere."
---
The days passed slowly.
Vance was interrogated, tortured, questioned. They wanted information about the Sentinel Network, about his allies, about his family.
He gave them nothing.
Magnus visited him regularly, trying to break him.
"Tell me what I want to know, and I'll let you go."
"I'd rather die."
"That can be arranged."
"I know. But I won't give you anything."
Magnus smiled. "You're just like your father. Stubborn. Determined. Doomed."
"At least I'm not a coward."
Magnus's smile faded. "You'll regret that."
---
One day, the door opened. A guard stood there.
"Someone to see you."
A figure walked in. Echo.
"Echo? How did you find me?"
"I never stopped looking. I found you."
"Are you okay?"
"I'm okay. We're all okay."
Vance's eyes filled with tears. "Echo, I thought I'd never see you again."
"I thought I'd never find you. But I did."
She moved to him, hugged him. He felt her warmth, her strength.
"We're getting you out of here," she said.
"How?"
"I have a plan."
---
The escape was risky.
Echo had infiltrated the facility, posing as a guard. She had keys, weapons, and a way out.
"Follow me," she said.
They moved through the corridors, silent and fast.
Vance reached the exit, felt the fresh air on his face.
"We made it," he said.
"Not yet. We need to keep moving."
They ran through the snow, the facility disappearing behind them.
---
They reached a safe house in the mountains.
Vance collapsed into a chair, his body aching. Echo was beside him.
"Echo, I need to know what happened. After I was captured."
"We went into hiding. Your mother, our daughter, Hawk, Flint. We scattered, went underground."
"Are they okay?"
"They're alive. That's all that matters."
Vance hugged her. "Thank you, Echo. For saving me."
"Don't thank me yet. The First Order is still out there. We still need to stop them."
"I know. But we'll do it together."
