Last Stand

The safe house in the mountains was cold, but Vance barely noticed. He sat at the command center, staring at the monitors. The First Order was still out there. Still planning. Still dangerous. His daughter was asleep in the next room. His mother was watching over her. Echo was beside him, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "I've been tracking their communications," she said. "They're regrouping. A new command center is being established." "Where?" "Eastern Europe. A facility in the Carpathian Mountains." "Then we go there." "Vance, we need to be smart about this. They know we're coming. They'll be waiting." "Then we don't go the way they expect." --- The flight to Eastern Europe took eight hours. Vance sat in the back of the plane, his mind focused. His team was with him. Hawk, Flint, Echo, Kai. They were ready. "Echo, give me the layout." "The facility is a fortress. Built into the mountain. Heavy security, but there's a weak point." "What weak point?" "A ventilation shaft on the north face. It's small, but we can fit through it." "Then that's our entry point." --- They approached the facility through the snow. The ventilation shaft was narrow, barely wide enough for one person. Vance went first, his body squeezing through the tight space. He emerged in a corridor. Empty. Silent. "Clear," he whispered. The others followed. They moved through the corridor, silent and fast. The facility was a maze of tunnels and rooms. "Echo, where's the command center?" "Two floors down. Follow the signs." They descended a staircase. The command center was at the end of the hall. Vance kicked the door open. The room was filled with figures. Dozens of them, sitting at consoles and monitors. At the center stood a figure Vance recognized. Magnus. "Mr. Cole. I was wondering when you'd arrive." "Then you know why I'm here." "I know you want to stop us. I know you think you can win." "I don't think. I know." Vance raised his Sig. Magnus smiled. "You're too late. The First Order is already in motion." "I don't care." Vance pulled the trigger. --- The bullet struck Magnus in the chest. He went down, his eyes wide with surprise. The other members of the First Order scrambled for cover. Vance fired again, taking them out one by one. Echo was at his side, her pistol blazing. Hawk and Flint covered the exits. Within minutes, it was over. Vance stood in the center of the room, his chest heaving. "We did it," Echo said. "Not yet. The First Order is still out there. We just took out their leadership." "Then we find the next leadership." "It's not that simple. They're decentralized. A cell-based structure. We take out one cell, another takes its place." "Then we keep fighting." --- They searched the facility, but found nothing. "No files, no records, no communications," Echo said. "They wiped everything before we got here." "Then we find another way." "There is no other way. The First Order is gone. We lost them." Vance was silent. Then he spoke. "We didn't lose them. They're still out there. We just need to find them." "And how do we do that?" "We follow the money. The First Order had billions in assets. Someone is managing those assets." Echo nodded slowly. "I can trace the financial transactions. It'll take time." "We have time." --- The days passed slowly. Vance worked with Echo, tracing the financial transactions. They found patterns, connections, and leads. "I found something," Echo said. "A shell company in the Cayman Islands. It's been receiving payments from the First Order's accounts." "Who's running it?" "A woman named Nyx." Vance's blood went cold. "Nyx? She's dead." "She's not dead. She's been hiding in the Caribbean. She's been managing the First Order's assets." "Then we go to the Caribbean." --- The flight to the Caribbean took eight hours. Vance sat in the back of the plane, his mind churning. Nyx. Alive. Managing the First Order's assets. Hawk was beside him. "This is a trap." "I know." "Then why are you going?" "Because Nyx has the answers. And I need those answers." The plane landed on a small island. A boat was waiting. Vance and his team crossed the water, reaching a private villa. The villa was opulent, surrounded by palm trees and white sand. "Echo, give me the layout." "One floor. The main room is in the center. Security is light—she's not expecting us." "Then we hit her fast." --- They breached the villa through the front door. Nyx was waiting. She was sitting in a chair, a glass of wine in her hand. "Mr. Cole. I was wondering when you'd arrive." "Then you know why I'm here." "I know you want the First Order's assets. I know you want to stop the remnants." "Then give me what I want." Nyx smiled. "I'll give you the assets. But I want something in return." "What?" "Protection. The remnants are hunting me. They want to silence me before I talk." "Then talk." Nyx reached into her pocket. Vance tensed. She pulled out a small drive. "Everything is on here. Names, locations, communications. The remnants' entire network." Vance took the drive. "Why are you helping me?" "Because the remnants are going to fail. And I want to be on the winning side." --- Vance walked out of the villa, the drive in his hand. His team was waiting. "Did you get it?" Hawk asked. "I got it." "Then let's go." --- They flew back to the safe house. Vance sat in the command center, analyzing the data on the drive. The remnants' network was vast, sprawling, and deeply embedded. "We can take them all out," Echo said. "One by one." "It'll take years." "Then we take years." Vance shook his head. "We don't have years. The remnants are still active. They're still planning." "Then we hit them fast. Hit them hard." Vance looked at the list. Dozens of names. Dozens of locations. "Let's start with the leaders," he said. "The ones at the top." --- The next three months were a blur of operations. Vance and his team moved across the globe, hitting remnants' safe houses, taking down leaders, destroying networks. Each mission was a success. Each mission brought them closer to peace. But each mission also took a toll. Hawk was wounded in a firefight in Moscow. Flint was nearly killed in a car bomb in London. Echo was captured in Paris and barely escaped. Vance was exhausted. His body was battered. His mind was frayed. But he couldn't stop. Not until it was over. --- They returned to the safe house after the Paris mission. Vance collapsed into a chair, his eyes closed. His mother was at his side, tending to his wounds. "Vance, you need to rest," she said. "I can't rest. Not yet." "Then at least let me help you." She cleaned his wounds, bandaged them. He winced but didn't complain. His daughter walked in, her face pale. "Daddy, are you okay?" Vance looked at her. His little girl. His reason for living. "I'm okay, sweetheart. I just need to rest." She crawled into his lap, hugged him. "I love you, Daddy." Vance hugged her back. "I love you too." --- The days passed slowly. Vance rested, healed, and spent time with his family. His daughter brought him joy, his mother brought him comfort, and Echo brought him love. The remnants were scattered, defeated. The war was over. For now. --- One evening, Vance stood on the porch of the safe house, watching the sunset over the mountains. Echo walked out, joined him. "Vance, I want to ask you something." "What?" "Are you happy?" Vance thought about it. He'd been through so much. Lost so much. But he'd also gained so much. "Yes," he said. "I'm happy." Echo smiled. "Good. Because I am too." They watched the sunset together. --- The next morning, Vance stood in the command center, staring at the monitors. Echo walked in, her laptop under her arm. "Vance, we have a lead. A new threat emerging in South America." "Then we go to South America." "Are you sure? You've been working nonstop." "I can rest when the world is safe." Echo shook her head. "The world will never be safe. There will always be threats. Always be enemies." "Then I'll keep fighting." "Until when?" "Until I can't anymore." Echo walked over, took his hand. "Then I'll be fighting beside you." Vance looked at her. "Thank you, Echo."
