The Silent Enemy

1601 Words
The morning started like any other. Vance was in the garden with his daughter, teaching her how to plant tomatoes. Her small hands were covered in dirt, her face smudged with soil. She was singing a song she'd made up, her voice bright and carefree. Echo was on the porch, watching them with a smile. His mother was inside, cooking breakfast. For a moment, everything was perfect. Then the drone appeared. It was small, barely visible against the sky. But Vance saw it. His instincts screamed. "Get inside!" he shouted. He grabbed his daughter, ran for the house. Echo was already at the door, her pistol drawn. The drone fired. Vance dove, covering his daughter with his body. The bullet struck the ground where they'd been standing. Echo fired, hitting the drone. It spiraled into the trees. Vance scrambled to his feet, his daughter in his arms. "Everyone to the bunker!" They ran. His mother was already at the bunker door, holding it open. They piled inside. Vance slammed the door shut. --- The bunker was small but secure. Vance sat against the wall, his daughter in his lap. She was crying, her small body shaking. "It's okay, sweetheart. Daddy's here." Echo was at the console, trying to get a signal. "They're jamming us. I can't get through to anyone." "Then we wait." "How did they find us?" "I don't know. But someone told them." His mother looked up. "It wasn't me, Vance. I swear." "I know, Mom. I know." --- The hours passed slowly. Vance stayed with his daughter, holding her, comforting her. She fell asleep in his arms. Echo worked on the console, trying to find a way out. His mother watched the door. "We can't stay here forever," Echo said. "I know." "What's the plan?" "We wait until dark. Then we move." "And go where?" "I don't know. But we can't stay here." --- Night fell. Vance moved to the door, his Sig in his hand. He opened it a crack. The compound was quiet. The drone was gone. The threat was gone. "Clear," he said. They emerged from the bunker. The house was intact. The garden was undisturbed. "It's a warning," Echo said. "They wanted us to know they can reach us anytime." "Then we make sure they can't." --- They packed the essentials and left the compound. Vance drove through the night, his family beside him. His daughter was asleep in the back. His mother was watching the road. Echo was at the console, tracking their position. "Where are we going?" Echo asked. "Somewhere they don't know about. Somewhere my father never told anyone." "Where?" "A place I found in his files. A bunker in the desert. Off-grid, no records." "Then we go there." --- The drive took three days. Vance drove through the night, sleeping in shifts. The desert was vast, empty, silent. They reached the bunker at dawn. It was buried in the sand, hidden from view. "This is it," Vance said. They entered. The bunker was small but well-stocked. Food, water, supplies. "We'll stay here until we figure out our next move," Vance said. "And then?" "Then we find out who sent that drone. And we stop them." --- The days passed slowly. Vance worked with Echo, setting up a new command center. His mother watched his daughter. His team—Hawk, Flint, Kai—joined them, bringing supplies and intelligence. "I've been tracking the drone's signal," Echo said. "It came from a location in Eastern Europe. A facility we've never seen before." "Then we go there." "Vance, we need more intel. We need to know who we're dealing with." "Then we get more intel." Kai stepped forward. "I've been analyzing the drone's technology. It's advanced. More advanced than anything the First Order used." "What does that mean?" "It means there's someone else out there. Someone we don't know about." --- The investigation continued. Vance worked with his team, gathering intelligence on the mysterious facility. They found patterns, connections, and leads. "I found something," Echo said. "The facility is run by a man named Soren." Vance's blood went cold. "Soren? He's dead." "He's not dead. He's been hiding in Eastern Europe. He's been building a new organization." "What organization?" "The Order. He's been planning to take over where the First Order left off." "Then we stop him." --- The flight to Eastern Europe took eight hours. Vance sat in the back of the plane, his mind focused. His team was with him. Hawk, Flint, Echo, Kai. "Echo, give me the layout." "The facility is a fortress. Built into a mountain. Heavy security, but there's a weak point." "What weak point?" "A service entrance on the east side. It's lightly guarded." "Then that's our entry point." --- They approached the facility through the forest. The service entrance was a small door, set into the rock. Vance picked the lock. They slipped inside. The facility was a maze of corridors and rooms. Vance moved through the shadows, his team behind him. "Where's the command center?" he asked. "Two floors down," Echo replied. "Follow the signs." They descended a staircase. The command center was at the end of the hall. Vance kicked the door open. The room was filled with figures. Dozens of them, sitting at consoles and monitors. At the center stood a figure Vance recognized. Soren. "Mr. Cole. I was wondering when you'd arrive." "Then you know why I'm here." "I know you want to stop me. I know you think you can win." "I don't think. I know." Vance raised his Sig. Soren smiled. "You're too late. The Order is already in motion." "I don't care." Vance pulled the trigger. --- The bullet struck Soren in the chest. He went down, his eyes wide with surprise. The other members of the Order scrambled for cover. Vance fired again, taking them out one by one. Echo was at his side, her pistol blazing. Hawk and Flint covered the exits. Within minutes, it was over. Vance stood in the center of the room, his chest heaving. "We did it," Echo said. "Not yet. The Order is still out there. We just took out their leadership." "Then we find the next leadership." "It's not that simple. They're decentralized. A cell-based structure. We take out one cell, another takes its place." "Then we keep fighting." --- They searched the facility, but found nothing. "No files, no records, no communications," Echo said. "He wiped everything before we got here." "Then we find another way." "There is no other way. The Order is gone. We lost them." Vance was silent. Then he spoke. "We didn't lose them. They're still out there. We just need to find them." "And how do we do that?" "We follow the money. The Order had billions in assets. Someone is managing those assets." Echo nodded slowly. "I can trace the financial transactions. It'll take time." "We have time." --- The days passed slowly. Vance worked with Echo, tracing the financial transactions. They found patterns, connections, and leads. "I found something," Echo said. "A shell company in the Cayman Islands. It's been receiving payments from the Order's accounts." "Who's running it?" "A woman named Nyx." Vance's blood went cold. "Nyx? She's dead." "She's not dead. She's been hiding in the Caribbean. She's been managing the Order's assets." "Then we go to the Caribbean." --- The flight to the Caribbean took eight hours. Vance sat in the back of the plane, his mind churning. Nyx. Alive. Managing the Order's assets. Hawk was beside him. "This is a trap." "I know." "Then why are you going?" "Because Nyx has the answers. And I need those answers." The plane landed on a small island. A boat was waiting. Vance and his team crossed the water, reaching a private villa. The villa was opulent, surrounded by palm trees and white sand. "Echo, give me the layout." "One floor. The main room is in the center. Security is light—she's not expecting us." "Then we hit her fast." --- They breached the villa through the front door. Nyx was waiting. She was sitting in a chair, a glass of wine in her hand. "Mr. Cole. I was wondering when you'd arrive." "Then you know why I'm here." "I know you want the Order's assets. I know you want to stop the remnants." "Then give me what I want." Nyx smiled. "I'll give you the assets. But I want something in return." "What?" "Protection. The remnants are hunting me. They want to silence me before I talk." "Then talk." Nyx reached into her pocket. Vance tensed. She pulled out a small drive. "Everything is on here. Names, locations, communications. The remnants' entire network." Vance took the drive. "Why are you helping me?" "Because the remnants are going to fail. And I want to be on the winning side." --- Vance walked out of the villa, the drive in his hand. His team was waiting. "Did you get it?" Hawk asked. "I got it." "Then let's go." --- They flew back to the desert bunker. Vance sat in the command center, analyzing the data on the drive. The remnants' network was vast, sprawling, and deeply embedded. "We can take them all out," Echo said. "One by one." "It'll take years." "Then we take years." Vance shook his head. "We don't have years. The remnants are still active. They're still planning." "Then we hit them fast. Hit them hard." Vance looked at the list. Dozens of names. Dozens of locations. "Let's start with the leaders," he said. "The ones at the top."
