Vance woke in darkness.
His head pounded. His lungs burned. He was lying on a concrete floor, his hands cuffed behind his back. The air was cold, damp.
He looked around. Echo was in the cell next to him. Hawk across the hall. Flint was unconscious, his face pale.
"Echo," Vance whispered.
She stirred. "Vance? Where are we?"
"I don't know. But we need to get out."
"How? We're locked in."
"Then we find a way."
Vance examined his cell. Concrete walls, a steel door, a small window with bars. No ventilation. No light except a single bulb.
He looked at his cuffs. Steel. Standard issue. He'd escaped from these before.
He worked his hands, twisting, pulling. The cuffs were tight, but not impossible.
Then he heard footsteps.
A figure appeared at the door. Tall, distinguished, with cold eyes.
"Mr. Cole. I was wondering when you'd wake up."
"Who are you?"
"My name is Magnus. I'm the leader of the Order."
Vance's blood went cold. "You're dead."
"I'm very hard to kill. You should know that by now."
"What do you want?"
"I want to offer you a choice. Join us, or die."
"I'm not joining anyone."
"You don't have a choice. The Order is already in motion. If you try to stop us, we'll kill you."
"Then I'll take my chances."
Magnus smiled. "I thought you'd say that. That's why I've prepared something special for you."
He pressed a button on his wrist. The door to Vance's cell swung open.
Guards rushed in, grabbing Vance, dragging him down the corridor.
---
Vance was thrown into a room.
White walls. A single chair. A mirror on the wall.
Magnus walked in, sat across from him.
"Mr. Cole, I'm going to give you one more chance. Tell me what I want to know, and I'll let you live."
"I'll never tell you anything."
"Then I'll have to be more persuasive."
Magnus gestured to the guards. They grabbed Vance, held him down.
Magnus pulled out a small device. "This is a neural disruptor. It will cause you immense pain without leaving any marks. I'm going to ask you again. Who is your contact in the Order?"
Vance spat in his face.
Magnus wiped his cheek, his expression cold. "Very well."
He pressed the device to Vance's temple.
---
Vance screamed.
The pain was indescribable. White-hot, searing through his skull. He couldn't think, couldn't breathe.
Magnus watched, his face impassive.
"Tell me what I want to know, and the pain stops."
Vance gasped, his vision blurring. "I'll... never..."
Magnus pressed harder.
Vance's world went white.
---
Vance woke in his cell.
His head was throbbing. His body was shaking. He could barely move.
Echo was at the bars, her face pale. "Vance! Are you okay?"
"I'm... alive."
"What did they do to you?"
"I don't... want to talk about it."
Hawk was across the hall, his fists clenched. "We need to get out of here."
"How?" Flint asked. "We're locked in."
"Then we break out."
Vance forced himself to sit up. His body screamed in protest.
"Echo, do you have any way to contact the outside?"
"No. They took everything."
"Then we do this the hard way."
---
The days passed slowly.
Vance was interrogated again and again. Each time, the pain was worse. But he gave them nothing.
Magnus visited him regularly, trying to break him.
"Tell me what I want to know, and this ends."
"I'd rather die."
"That can be arranged."
"I know. But I won't give you anything."
Magnus smiled. "You're just like your father. Stubborn. Determined. Doomed."
"At least I'm not a coward."
Magnus's smile faded. "You'll regret that."
---
One day, the door opened. A guard stood there.
"Someone to see you."
A figure walked in. Echo.
"Echo? How did you get in here?"
"I never left. They've been holding me too."
"But you're free now?"
"I escaped. And I'm getting you out."
"How?"
"I have a plan."
---
The escape was risky.
Echo had found a way out through the ventilation system. It was cramped, but it led to the outside.
"Follow me," she said.
They crawled through the vents, silent and fast. The guards were caught off guard.
They emerged outside, into the cold night air.
"Run!" Vance shouted.
They ran through the forest, the facility disappearing behind them.
---
They reached a safe house in the mountains.
Vance collapsed into a chair, his body aching. Echo was beside him.
"Echo, I need to know what happened. After I was captured."
"They separated us. Tried to get information out of us. But we didn't break."
"Did they hurt you?"
"Not as much as they hurt you."
Vance hugged her. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry I got you into this."
"Don't be. We're in this together."
---
The days passed slowly.
Vance recovered, healed, and prepared. The Order was still out there. Still planning. Still dangerous.
But he had his team back. He had his hope back.
One evening, Vance stood on the porch of the safe house, watching the sunset.
Echo walked out, joined him.
"Vance, I want to ask you something."
"What?"
"Are you happy?"
Vance thought about it. He'd been through so much. Lost so much. But he'd also gained so much.
"Yes," he said. "I'm happy."
Echo smiled. "Good. Because I am too."
They watched the sunset together.
---
The next morning, Vance stood in the command center, staring at the monitors.
Echo walked in, her laptop under her arm. "Vance, we have a lead. A new threat emerging in South America."
"Then we go to South America."
"Are you sure? You've been through so much."
"I'm sure. The Order is still out there. And I'm going to stop them."
Echo nodded. "Then let's go."
---
The flight to South America took ten hours.
Vance sat in the back of the plane, his mind focused. His team was with him. Hawk, Flint, Echo, Kai.
"Echo, give me the layout."
"The target is a compound in the sss. Heavily guarded, but they're not expecting us."
"Then we hit them hard and fast."
---
The compound was a fortress in the jungle.
Vance approached through the trees, his team behind him. The walls were high, the guards numerous.
"Echo, any weak points?"
"East wall. There's a gap in the security."
"Then that's our entry point."
They breached the compound. The fighting was fierce, but brief.
Vance reached the command center. The room was filled with figures. At the center stood a figure Vance recognized.
Magnus.
"Mr. Cole. I was wondering when you'd arrive."
"Then you know why I'm here."
"I know you want to stop me. I know you think you can win."
"I don't think. I know."
Vance raised his Sig. Magnus smiled.
"You're too late. The Order is already in motion."
"I don't care."
Vance pulled the trigger.
