The bunker's alarm screamed at 3 AM.
Vance was awake in an instant, his Sig in his hand. The monitors showed movement at the perimeter. Multiple heat signatures, moving fast.
"Echo, what's happening?"
"I don't know. The sensors are going crazy. Someone's out there."
"The First Order?"
"It has to be. They found us."
Vance moved to the door, his Sig raised. "Everyone to the bunker. Now."
His mother grabbed his daughter, ran for the reinforced room. Echo was at the console, trying to get a signal.
"They're jamming our communications," she said. "We're blind."
"Then we fight."
---
The attack came from all sides.
Vance moved through the bunker, his Sig blazing. The First Order's soldiers were everywhere, pouring through the tunnels.
Hawk was at the east entrance, his rifle cracking. Flint was covering the west.
"We can't hold them!" Hawk shouted. "There are too many!"
"Then we fall back to the inner chamber."
They retreated, firing as they went. Vance reached the inner chamber, slammed the door shut.
His mother was there, his daughter in her arms. Echo was at the console, trying to get a signal.
"We're trapped," Echo said.
"Then we fight our way out."
"There's no way out. They've got us surrounded."
Vance looked at his family. His daughter was crying. His mother was pale. Echo was scared.
"We're not dying here," he said. "Not today."
---
The door exploded inward.
Vance was thrown backward, his ears ringing. The First Order's soldiers poured through the breach.
He fired, reloaded, fired again. Hawk and Flint were at his side, covering the flanks.
"Get them out!" Vance shouted.
Echo grabbed his daughter, ran for the emergency exit. His mother followed.
Vance covered them, firing into the chaos. The soldiers fell, but more kept coming.
"Go!" he shouted. "I'll hold them!"
Echo looked back, her eyes filled with tears. "Vance—"
"Go! I'll find you!"
She ran.
Vance turned back to the soldiers, his Sig blazing. He fought through the chaos, taking them out one by one.
Then the lights went out.
---
Vance woke in darkness.
His head was pounding. His body was battered. He was lying on a concrete floor, his hands cuffed behind his back.
He looked around. He was in a cell. A steel door, a single light bulb.
The door opened. A figure walked in.
"Mr. Cole. I've been expecting you."
The figure was tall, distinguished, with cold eyes.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Magnus. I'm the leader of the First Order."
Vance's blood went cold. "You're dead. I killed you."
"You killed a body double. I've been watching you for years."
"Why? Why are you doing this?"
"Because the world needs order. The Collective, the Omega Initiative, the Phoenix—they were all trying to achieve the same thing. Control. Power. Stability."
"And you're different?"
"I'm successful. They failed. I won't."
Vance shook his head. "You're insane."
"Maybe. But I'm also in control. And that's all that matters."
---
The days passed slowly.
Vance was interrogated, tortured, questioned. They wanted information about the Sentinel Network, about his allies, about his family.
He gave them nothing.
Magnus visited him regularly, trying to break him.
"Tell me what I want to know, and I'll let you live."
"I'd rather die."
"That can be arranged."
"I know. But I won't give you anything."
Magnus smiled. "You're just like your father. Stubborn. Determined. Doomed."
"At least I'm not a coward."
Magnus's smile faded. "You'll regret that."
---
The weeks passed.
Vance was moved to a different facility. A prison in the middle of nowhere. No windows, no light, no hope.
But he held on. He had to. For his family.
One day, the door opened. A guard stood there.
"Someone to see you."
A figure walked in. Echo.
"Echo? How did you find me?"
"I never stopped looking. I found you."
"Are you okay? Is our daughter safe?"
"We're safe. We've been in hiding."
Vance's eyes filled with tears. "Echo, I thought I'd never see you again."
"I thought I'd never find you. But I did."
She moved to him, hugged him. He felt her warmth, her strength.
"We're getting you out of here," she said.
"How?"
"I have a plan."
---
The escape was risky.
Echo had infiltrated the facility, posing as a guard. She had keys, weapons, and a way out.
"Follow me," she said.
They moved through the corridors, silent and fast. The guards were caught off guard.
Vance reached the exit, felt the fresh air on his face.
"We made it," he said.
"Not yet. We need to keep moving."
They ran through the forest, the facility disappearing behind them.
---
They reached a safe house in the mountains.
Vance collapsed into a chair, his body aching. Echo was beside him.
"Echo, I need to know what happened. After I was captured."
"We went into hiding. Your mother, our daughter, Hawk, Flint. We scattered, went underground."
"Are they okay?"
"They're alive. That's all that matters."
Vance hugged her. "Thank you, Echo. For saving me."
"Don't thank me yet. The First Order is still out there. We still need to stop them."
"I know. But we'll do it together."
---
The days passed slowly.
Vance recovered, healed, and prepared. The First Order was still active, still planning, still dangerous.
But he had his family back. He had his team back. He had hope.
One evening, Vance stood on the porch of the safe house, watching the sunset.
Echo walked out, joined him.
"Vance, I want to ask you something."
"What?"
"Are you happy?"
Vance thought about it. He'd been through so much. Lost so much. But he'd also gained so much.
"Yes," he said. "I'm happy."
Echo smiled. "Good. Because I am too."
They watched the sunset together.
---
The next morning, Vance stood in the command center, staring at the monitors.
Echo walked in, her laptop under her arm. "Vance, we have a lead. A new threat emerging in Asia."
"Then we go to Asia."
"Are you sure? You've been through so much."
"I'm sure. The First Order is still out there. And I'm going to stop them."
Echo nodded. "Then let's go."
