The Hollow Mountain

The safe house was quiet when they returned. Vance walked through the door, his body aching, his mind exhausted. The Shadow Council was defeated, but his father was still out there. Still planning. Still building. His mother was waiting in the kitchen, a cup of coffee in her hand. Her eyes were red, her face pale. "Vance, I need to talk to you." "About what, Mom?" "About your father. About what he's planning." "You knew about the Shadow Council?" "I knew. I've known for years. He told me everything." Vance sat down across from her. "Then tell me. Tell me everything." His mother took a deep breath. "Your father has been planning this for decades. He built the Phoenix as a cover. The real organization was always the Shadow Council. They've been preparing to take control of the global infrastructure." "When?" "Now. The Collective is in chaos. The Omega Initiative is destroyed. There's no one left to stop him." "Then I'll stop him." His mother shook her head. "You can't. He's too powerful. He has operatives everywhere, assets in every country. He's been building this for thirty years." "Then I'll find a way." His mother reached across the table, took his hand. "Vance, I'm proud of you. You've become a good man. A strong man. But you can't fight this alone." "I'm not alone. I have Echo. I have the team." "And what about me? I'm still here. I can help." Vance looked at his mother. "Mom, I don't want to put you in danger." "I've been in danger my whole life. I can handle it." Vance was silent. Then he nodded. "Okay. Then help me." --- The command center was buzzing with activity. Echo was at her laptop, tracking communications. Kai was analyzing data from the Shadow Council's files. Hawk and Flint were preparing for the next operation. Vance stood at the central console, his mother beside him. "Echo, give me the status." "I've been tracking the Shadow Council's communications. They're scrambling. They know we hit them in Switzerland." "What about my father?" "He's gone underground. I can't find him." "Then we find him." Vance's mother stepped forward. "I know where he is." Everyone turned to look at her. "There's a bunker in the Rocky Mountains," she said. "He built it years ago. It's his final command center. If he's anywhere, he's there." "How do you know about it?" "He told me. He said it was his last resort. If everything else failed, he'd go there and wait." "Then that's where we go." --- The flight to the Rocky Mountains took four hours. Vance sat in the back of the plane, his mother beside him. Echo was across from them, her laptop open. "The bunker is buried in a mountain," his mother said. "There's only one entrance, heavily guarded. But there's a ventilation shaft on the north side. It's small, but we can fit through it." "Then that's our entry point." Vance looked at his team. Hawk, Flint, Echo, Kai. His mother. "We're going in. We're going to find my father. And we're going to stop him." --- The bunker was hidden in a remote valley, surrounded by peaks. Vance approached through the snow, his team behind him. The entrance was a steel door, camouflaged by rock and ice. "Echo, give me the layout." "The ventilation shaft is on the north side. It leads to the main command center." "Then that's where we go." They found the shaft. It was narrow, barely wide enough for one person. "I'll go first," Vance said. "No," his mother said. "I'll go. I know the layout better than anyone." Vance looked at her. "Mom—" "I'll be fine. Just follow me." His mother climbed into the shaft. Vance followed, then Echo, then the others. The shaft was dark, cramped, the walls covered in ice. Vance crawled forward, his breath misting in the cold. His mother reached a grate, pushed it open. She dropped into the room below. Vance followed. He landed in a corridor, his Sig raised. The corridor was empty. No guards, no cameras. "It's too quiet," Echo said. "I know. But we don't have a choice." They moved down the corridor. The command center was at the end. Vance kicked the door open. His father was standing at the central console, his back to the door. "Vance. I knew you'd come." "Then you know why I'm here." "I know you want to stop me. I know you think you can win." "I don't think. I know." Vance raised his Sig. His father turned. Elias's face was pale, tired. But his eyes were sharp, determined. "You're making a mistake, Vance." "I'm making the right choice." "The right choice? You're choosing to destroy everything I've built. Everything I've sacrificed." "You're building an empire of control. That's not sacrifice. That's tyranny." Elias shook his head. "You don't understand. You never did." "Then help me understand." Elias was silent for a moment. Then he spoke. "The world is broken, Vance. It's been broken for centuries. The Omega Initiative, the Collective, the Phoenix—they were all symptoms of the same disease. A disease that will keep killing until someone stops it." "And you think you're that someone?" "I know I am. I've been preparing for this moment my whole life. I have the resources, the connections, the will. I can fix what's broken." "By controlling everything? That's not fixing. That's replacing one tyranny with another." Elias looked at his son. "Then what would you do? How would you fix it?" Vance was silent for a moment. Then he spoke. "I don't know. But I know it's not this." Elias nodded slowly. "I was afraid you'd say that." He pressed a button on his wrist. The room filled with gas. Vance grabbed his mask, but it was too late. The gas was already in his lungs. He fell to his knees. The world went dark. --- Vance woke in a cell. Concrete walls. Steel door. A single light bulb. He looked around. Echo was in the cell next to him. His mother across the hall. Hawk, Flint, Kai were in separate cells. "Echo!" he shouted. "I'm here. I'm okay." "Where are we?" "I don't know. But I think we're still in the bunker." Vance stood up, examined the door. Steel, reinforced. A biometric lock. "We need to get out of here." "How?" "I'm working on it." Vance searched his pockets. His Sig was gone. His phone was gone. But his father's ring was still on his finger. The ring had a sharp edge. He'd used it before. He could use it again. He scraped the ring against the lock, over and over. Slowly, methodically. The metal began to wear. --- The hours passed slowly. Vance worked on the lock, pausing only when he heard footsteps. Guards patrolled the corridor, their footsteps echoing in the silence. His mother was in the cell across the hall, her face pale. "Vance, your father won't let us go. He's going to keep us here until he's finished." "Then we break out before he's finished." "How?" "I'll find a way." Vance continued working on the lock. The metal was wearing down, but it was slow. Echo was in the cell next to him. "Vance, I need to tell you something." "What?" "I know where your father is going. After the bunker. He has a secondary command center. A fallback position." "Where?" "A private island in the Pacific. He's been building it for years." "Then we need to stop him before he gets there." "We will." --- The lock finally gave way. Vance pushed the door open, moved to Echo's cell, then his mother's. He freed them all. "We need to get to the command center," he said. They moved through the corridor, silent and fast. The bunker was quiet, the guards distracted. Vance reached the command center. His father was still at the console. "Dad." Elias turned. His face was calm, unsurprised. "I knew you'd get out. You were always resourceful." "Then you know why I'm here." "I know you want to stop me. I know you think you can win." "I don't think. I know." Vance raised his Sig. His father didn't move. "Go ahead, Vance. Shoot me. End this." Vance's hand shook. His left hand. The nerve damage. "Dad, I don't want to kill you." "Then don't. Let me finish what I started." "I can't." "Then you have to kill me." Vance stared at his father. The man who had raised him. The man who had betrayed him. The man who had loved him. "I'm sorry, Dad." Vance pulled the trigger.
