The command center was quiet.
Vance stood at the central console, staring at the monitors. The Sentinel Network was tracking a new threat—a cell of Collective remnants operating in Southeast Asia. They were planning something. Something big.
But Vance couldn't focus. His mind kept drifting back to the bunker. To his father's face. To the gunshot.
His left hand was trembling. It had been doing that a lot lately.
Echo walked in, her laptop under her arm. "Vance, I've been analyzing the intelligence from Asia. The cell is led by a man named Raiden. He was one of the Director's top operatives."
"Raiden? I thought he was dead."
"He was. But he's back. He's been rebuilding the Collective's network in the region."
"Then we take him out."
"Vance, are you okay? You seem distracted."
"I'm fine."
"You're not fine. You've been staring at that screen for an hour. You haven't touched your coffee."
Vance looked at the cup on the console. Cold. He hadn't even noticed.
"I'm fine, Echo."
Echo walked over, took his hand. "Vance, I know what happened with your father was hard. But you can't let it consume you."
"I'm not letting it consume me."
"Then what are you doing?"
"I'm working. I'm doing my job."
Echo shook her head. "You're hiding. You're burying yourself in work so you don't have to deal with what happened."
Vance pulled his hand away. "Echo, I don't want to talk about it."
"Then we'll talk about the mission. The cell in Asia. They're planning to hit a government facility in Bangkok. Steal classified intelligence."
"Then we stop them."
"How? We don't have enough intel. We don't know their full plan."
"Then we find out."
Vance walked to the door. Echo followed.
"Vance, where are you going?"
"I'm going to Bangkok. I'm going to find Raiden. And I'm going to end this."
"Vance, you can't just run off on your own."
"I'm not running off. I'm doing my job."
Echo grabbed his arm. "No. You're running away. You're running from what happened with your father."
Vance stopped. His jaw tightened.
"Echo, I don't want to talk about this."
"Too bad. We're talking about it."
Vance turned to face her. His eyes were hard, cold.
"What do you want me to say? That I killed my father? That I shot him in cold blood? That I'm a monster?"
"You're not a monster. You're a man who did what he had to do."
"Then why do I feel like a monster?"
Echo stepped closer. "Because you're human. Because you have a heart. Because you loved him."
Vance's composure cracked. His eyes filled with tears.
"Echo, I don't know how to live with this."
"Then let me help you. Let me be there for you."
Vance hugged her, held her tight. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"I know. I know."
---
The days passed slowly.
Vance worked with Echo, preparing for the mission in Bangkok. He was more focused now, more present. But the shadows were still there.
His mother was worried about him. She sat with him in the evenings, talking, listening.
"Vance, I want to tell you something about your father."
"What?"
"He wasn't always like this. When we first met, he was kind, gentle, idealistic. He wanted to change the world."
"And then?"
"And then the world changed him. He saw too much darkness. He lost too many people. He became afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
"Afraid of losing everything. So he tried to control everything."
Vance was silent. Then he spoke.
"I don't want to become like him."
"You won't. You're nothing like him."
"I killed him, Mom."
"You stopped him. There's a difference."
---
The mission in Bangkok was a success.
Vance and his team moved through the city, silent and fast. They found the cell, took down Raiden, and stopped the operation.
Vance stood in the command center of the cell's headquarters, looking out over the city.
Echo walked in. "Vance, we did it. The cell is finished."
"Then we move to the next target."
"Vance, we need to talk."
"About what?"
"About what happens next. We've been fighting for years. We need to think about the future."
"I am thinking about the future."
"Then what does it look like?"
Vance was silent. Then he spoke.
"I don't know. But I know I want you to be part of it."
Echo smiled. "I want to be part of it too."
---
They flew back to the safe house.
Vance sat in the back of the plane, his eyes closed. Echo was beside him, her hand in his.
"Vance, I want to ask you something."
"What?"
"Do you think we'll ever be done? Is there ever going to be a time when we stop fighting?"
Vance thought about it. The Collective, the Omega Initiative, the Phoenix. There had always been another enemy, another threat.
"I don't know," he said. "But I know we'll face it together."
Echo squeezed his hand. "That's all I need."
---
They arrived at the safe house at dawn.
Vance walked inside, his mother waiting. She hugged him.
"Vance, you're back."
"I'm back, Mom."
"Did you find what you were looking for?"
"I found what I needed. Peace. Justice."
His mother hugged him tighter. "I'm so proud of you."
Vance looked around the room. His family. His home. His life.
He had everything he needed.
---
The months passed.
Vance worked with his team, tracking threats and protecting the innocent. The Sentinel Network grew, expanding to new regions and new allies.
His daughter grew, her first steps, her first words. Echo was beside him, every step of the way.
One evening, Vance stood on the porch, watching the sunset.
Echo walked out, joined him.
"Vance, I want to ask you something."
"What?"
"Are you happy?"
Vance looked at her. His wife. His partner. His love.
"Yes," he said. "I'm happy."
Echo smiled. "Good. Because I am too."
They watched the sunset together.
---
The next morning, Vance stood in the command center, watching the monitors.
Echo walked in, her laptop under her arm. "Vance, we have a lead. A new threat emerging in South America."
"Then we go to South America."
"Are you sure? You've been working nonstop."
"I can rest when the world is safe."
Echo shook her head. "The world will never be safe. There will always be threats. Always be enemies."
"Then I'll keep fighting."
"Until when?"
"Until I can't anymore."
Echo walked over, took his hand. "Then I'll be fighting beside you."
Vance looked at her. "Thank you, Echo."
