Vance's finger tightened on the trigger. The Syndicate leader stood before him, calm, smiling.
"Who is the mole?" Vance demanded.
The leader laughed. "You're not going to shoot me, Mr. Cole. You need me alive."
"I don't need you at all."
"Yes, you do. Because without me, you'll never find the mole. And the mole is about to destroy everything you've built."
Vance's hand shook. His left hand. The nerve damage.
"Tell me who it is."
"I'll show you." The leader pressed a button on his wrist. A screen flickered to life. "Your team is on the grounds. All four of them. One of them is transmitting a signal to my network right now."
Vance looked at the screen. It showed a map of the facility. Four dots. One of them blinking.
"Show me who."
"Watch."
The camera zoomed in on the east wing. A figure was crouched behind a pillar, holding a small device.
Echo.
Vance's blood went cold. "No. It can't be."
"She's been feeding me information since the beginning. Every move you've made, she's told me about it. Every safe house, every plan, every weakness."
"Why? Why would she do that?"
"She has a sister. Mira. The Syndicate has been holding her for years. They threatened to kill her if Echo didn't cooperate."
Vance stared at the screen. Echo, his friend. His teammate. His betrayer.
"She saved my life," he said. "More than once."
"Because she needed you alive. She needed to keep the operation going. But now that it's over, she's being recalled."
Vance felt something snap inside him. Not anger. Not betrayal. Something colder. Something darker.
"Where is she now?"
"Still in the building. I can give you her exact location."
"Then do it."
The leader gave him the coordinates. Vance turned and ran.
---
The east wing was dark, silent.
Vance moved through the corridors, his Sig raised. The coordinates were in his head. Echo's location.
He found her in a supply closet, hunched over her laptop.
"Echo."
She spun around, her face pale. "Vance. I can explain."
"I don't want explanations. I want the truth."
Echo's eyes filled with tears. "He has Mira. The Syndicate leader. He said he'd kill her if I didn't help him."
"You should have told me."
"I couldn't. He was watching everything I did. Every word I said. If I'd told you, they would have killed her."
Vance stared at her. His friend. His betrayer.
"I trusted you," he said.
"I know. And I betrayed that trust. But I had no choice."
"There's always a choice."
Echo shook her head. "Not when your family is on the line. You of all people should understand that."
Vance was silent. He did understand. He would do anything to save his family.
"I'm going to find Mira," he said. "I'm going to save her. And then I'm going to decide what to do with you."
Echo nodded slowly. "I understand."
"Where is she?"
"She's in a facility in Maryland. The Syndicate has been keeping her there for years."
"Then that's where we're going."
---
They walked out of the supply closet. Hawk and Flint were waiting, their faces hard.
"We heard everything," Hawk said. "You should have told us."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"Sorry doesn't fix it."
Vance stepped between them. "We don't have time for this. The Syndicate leader is still in the building. We need to take him down."
"He's already gone," Flint said. "He escaped while we were talking."
Vance's heart sank. "Then we go after him."
"Where?"
"Maryland. Echo's sister is there. He'll be waiting for us."
Echo looked at him. "You're still going to help me?"
"I told you I would. And I keep my promises."
---
They left the Shenandoah facility behind.
The drive to Maryland took four hours. Vance sat in the back, watching the landscape blur past. His mind was churning.
Echo. His betrayer. His friend.
He didn't know what to feel. Anger, sadness, understanding. A mix of all three.
"We're here," Hawk said.
The facility was small, nondescript. A warehouse in an industrial park. No guards, no cameras.
"Too easy," Flint said.
"It's a trap," Vance agreed. "But we're going in anyway."
They approached the building. The door was unlocked.
Inside, the warehouse was empty. Just a single chair in the center of the room. And in the chair, a young girl.
"Mira!" Echo ran to her sister, wrapped her arms around her.
"You came for me," Mira said. "I knew you would."
"I'll always come for you."
Then the lights went out.
Vance dropped to one knee. "Everyone down!"
The room filled with gas. Vance grabbed his mask, pulled it on. He saw Hawk, Flint, Echo doing the same.
Mira was unconscious. Echo held her tight.
"Get them out!" Vance shouted.
They ran for the exit. The door was blocked. A figure stood in the shadows.
The Syndicate leader.
"Mr. Cole. I was hoping you'd come."
Vance raised his Sig. "Let us go."
"Why would I do that? I have everything I want."
"Then you have nothing."
The leader smiled. "I have your friend. I have her sister. And I have you. All in one room."
"Then come get me."
The leader raised his hand. The room filled with soldiers.
Vance fired. Hawk fired. Flint fired.
The soldiers fell. But more kept coming.
"We need to fall back!" Hawk shouted.
"No! We hold!"
Vance fought through the smoke, his Sig blazing. He reached the leader, grabbed him by the throat.
"Call them off!"
"Never."
Vance squeezed. The leader's eyes went wide.
"Call them off!"
The leader gasped. "Fine. Retreat."
The soldiers fell back.
Vance released the leader. "You're coming with us."
"I'm not going anywhere."
The leader pressed a button on his wrist. The room shook.
"The building is coming down," he said. "In thirty seconds, we'll all be dead."
Vance looked at his team. Echo with Mira. Hawk and Flint at the door.
"Go," he said. "I'll hold him."
"I'm not leaving you," Echo said.
"You have to. Get Mira out."
Echo hesitated. Then she ran.
Vance faced the leader. "It's just you and me now."
"Then let's finish this."
They fought. The building shook. The walls crumbled. Vance's fists found the leader's face, again and again.
The leader fell. Vance stood over him.
"It's over," Vance said.
"It's never over."
Vance pulled the trigger.
The leader went still.
Vance ran. The building was coming down around him. He burst through the door, into the open air.
Hawk was there, grabbing him. "Move!"
They ran. The building collapsed behind them.
Vance collapsed in the grass, gasping for breath. His body was battered. His mind was spinning.
Echo was beside him, Mira in her arms.
"It's over," Echo said. "He's gone."
"Not yet," Vance said. "The Syndicate is still out there. They'll find new leaders."
"Then we'll find them first."
Vance looked at her. His betrayer. His friend.
"I'm not going to forgive you," he said. "Not yet."
"I know."
"But I'm not going to abandon you either."
Echo nodded. "That's all I ask."
---
They drove away from the warehouse. The sun was rising over Maryland.
Vance sat in the back, his eyes closed. The fight wasn't over. It would never be over.
But for now, they'd won.
