Chapter 2 – The Stranger’s Secret

212 Words
The stranger led me through winding alleys, the rain turning to a fine mist that clung to my skin. My heart hammered in my chest—not just from the running, but from the dangerous unknown that was this man. “Who are you?” I demanded, voice barely above a whisper. He glanced back at me, his sharp eyes catching the faint glow of lanterns. “Names don’t matter now. What matters is survival.” I hated that answer. I hated feeling powerless. But the truth was, I had nowhere else to go. He brought me to a hidden safe house deep within the city—a small room filled with maps and letters, the scent of leather and ink thick in the air. “Why help me?” I asked. His gaze dropped to the floor. “Because the kingdom is in danger. Not just from outside, but from within.” The weight of his words settled heavy on my shoulders. This was bigger than an arranged marriage or a runaway princess. It was a war for Lysara’s soul—and I was right in the middle of it. As I sank onto a worn chair, I realized one thing for certain: trust would be the hardest battle of all.
