CHAPTER 3: WHEN DEATH BECOMES A NEW BEGINNING Mia couldn’t sleep. Even inside Ethan’s safe house, her body refused to relax. Every sound made her flinch. Every silence felt suspicious. She sat on the edge of the bed, wrapped in a blanket Ethan had given her earlier. It still smelled faintly like rain and something clean. Something real. Ethan stood near the window, watching outside like the night itself could attack them. “You should rest,” he said softly without turning. Mia let out a weak laugh. “Rest?” she repeated. “After tonight?” Her voice broke slightly at the end. She hated that weakness. Ethan finally turned. For a moment, he just looked at her. Not scanning. Not analyzing. Just looking. Like she was human, not a problem to solve. “You survived something planned to destroy you,” he said quietly. “That alone should tell you how strong you are.” Mia shook her head. “I don’t feel strong,” she whispered. “I feel… used. Like my whole life was a lie I didn’t even know I was living.” Silence. Ethan stepped closer, slowly. Careful. Like he was afraid she might break if he moved too fast. “That feeling doesn’t go away immediately,” he said. “But it gets quieter.” Mia looked up at him. Her eyes were tired now. Not just from fear. From betrayal. “Why are you still here?” she asked. Ethan didn’t answer immediately. Then softly: “Because you remind me of someone who didn’t get saved in time.” That hit something deep in her chest. For the first time that night, Mia felt tears rise again. But this time, she didn’t stop them. --- Ethan noticed. And instead of stepping away, he sat beside her. Not too close. Just enough so she wasn’t alone in the space. Mia wiped her face quickly. “I hate crying,” she whispered. “Why?” he asked. “Because it makes me feel weak.” Ethan shook his head slightly. “No,” he said softly. “It makes you human.” That word stayed in the air longer than expected. Human. Mia leaned slightly back, her head resting against the wall. “I thought Adrian loved me,” she said suddenly. Ethan didn’t interrupt. “I thought I was safe,” she continued. “I thought I understood my life.” Her voice cracked again. “But I was just… blind.” A long silence followed. Then Ethan spoke carefully. “Sometimes the people closest to us are the ones we see the least clearly.” Mia looked at him. “Do you think he was always like that?” she asked quietly. Ethan hesitated. “I think…” he said slowly, “you were never meant to see the real version of him.” That made her stomach twist. --- Somewhere far away in the city, a phone rang. Adrian Vale answered calmly. Kate’s voice came through. “She’s gone,” Kate said. A pause. Adrian didn’t react immediately. Then softly: “No.” Kate frowned. “What do you mean no?” Adrian’s voice stayed calm. “She didn’t just disappear,” he said. “Someone took her.” Silence. Then his tone shifted slightly. Colder. “Find her.” --- Back at the safe house, Mia suddenly felt a strange chill run through her body. Like something had just shifted in the air. Ethan noticed immediately. “What is it?” he asked. Mia looked around the room. “I don’t know,” she whispered. “I just feel like… they’re still close.” Ethan’s expression hardened. “They are,” he said. Mia’s heart dropped. “Then why are we still here?” Ethan stood up. Because now his voice changed. More serious. More final. “Because staying as you are right now is dangerous.” Mia frowned. “What does that mean?” Ethan looked at her directly. “It means they already know what you look like,” he said. “Where you live. Who you are.” A pause. Then: “If you stay Mia Sinclair… they will find you.” Silence. Mia’s chest tightened. “So what do I do?” she asked softly. Ethan didn’t answer immediately. Then he said something that changed everything. “You disappear.” --- Mia froze. “Disappear how?” Ethan walked to a drawer and pulled out a small file. He placed it gently in front of her. Inside were documents. A new identity. A new name. Mia stared at it. Confused. Until she saw it. IVY. Her breath stopped. “This…” she whispered. “This isn’t real.” “It will be,” Ethan said quietly. Mia shook her head. “I can’t just become someone else.” Ethan stepped closer. And this time, his voice softened. “You already lost the life you knew,” he said. “Now you choose what comes after.” Mia’s eyes filled again. “But what about me?” she whispered. “Who am I supposed to be if I’m not Mia Sinclair?” Ethan didn’t answer immediately. Then softly: “Someone who survives.” Silence. Heavy silence. Then— A loud bang echoed outside the building. Ethan instantly turned. His hand moved to his side. Mia stood up quickly. “What was that?” she asked, panic rising again. Ethan didn’t look at her this time. “They found us faster than I thought,” he said. Mia’s blood ran cold. “So what now?” she whispered. Ethan turned back to her. And this time, his voice was final. “Now you don’t stay alive as Mia Sinclair.” A pause. Then: “You are reborn tonight.” Mia’s heart pounded. “What are you going to do?” she asked. Ethan stepped closer. Very close now. And for the first time, his expression wasn’t just protective. It was something deeper. Something personal. “I’m going to make sure Ivy survives.” The banging outside got louder. Voices. Running footsteps. Ethan grabbed her hand. Warm. Firm. Real. “Trust me,” he said. Mia hesitated. One second. Then she nodded slightly. Not fully trusting. But choosing him anyway. --- The door behind them shook violently. Ethan pulled her toward the back exit. Fast. Urgent. Mia’s heart was pounding so hard she could barely breathe. “This is insane,” she whispered while running. Ethan looked back at her once. And said: “No.” “This is your second life starting.” They reached a hidden underground room. A medical setup. A surgeon waiting. Mia froze. “What is this?” she asked. Ethan turned to her. And this time, his voice softened completely. “Your beginning.” Mia’s eyes widened. “No… I can’t—” Ethan stepped closer. And gently held her shoulders. “You can,” he said. “Because if you don’t, they will kill you properly next time.” Silence. Tears filled her eyes again. But this time, she didn’t fight it. Slowly, she nodded. Outside, footsteps grew closer. Voices shouting her name. Mia Sinclair. Ethan squeezed her hand once. “Look at me,” he said softly. She did. And for a moment, the chaos disappeared. “I won’t let anything happen to you,” he said. Mia closed her eyes slowly. And whispered: “I don’t know how to be anyone else.” Ethan replied: “Then I’ll help you become her.” The surgeon stepped forward. The lights dimmed. And as the door outside slammed open— Mia Sinclair’s last thought before everything changed was: “Ivy… who is that?” Then darkness took her.
