29 There’s hardly anyone in the carriage. I talk to myself as I ride. In silence. “You’re running away, aren’t you?” I say to myself. And go on: “Running away is pretty unbecoming. Who are you running from?” “From bad people.” “There are plenty of bad people.” “From the worst people.” “But are they so frightening, those bad people?” “They’re scary, if they are in power.” “Authority is always in the hands of bad people. So should everyone run away?” “Those in authority aren’t always bad people. And even if you’re right, bad people are not always given the freedom to commit evil.” “How can you run away from the authorities? They’re everywhere.” “I’m running into myself. I’m running away into nowhere.” “Then you’ll have to become no-one.” “I already am No-one.” And I bid farewel
