Chapter 2 – Trapped Together

The fire blazed warmly in the cabin, creating flickering shadows across the room, but it did little to quiet the storm outside or inside Seren's chest. She tucked her damp hair behind her ear and hugged the steaming mug of tea, attempting to convince herself that everything was alright. Except it was not. She was stuck here with a stranger, a man she didn't know but couldn't quit admiring. Alaric Voss went across the cabin with silent precision, which caused Seren to hesitate. He carefully hung his coat, straightened the seats, and even spaced the firewood. It wasn't simply instinct; his movements were disciplined, with a sense of order and control radiating from them. He's a lawyer, she realized unexpectedly. This explains his deliberate approach to everything. "Tea ready," he remarked without looking up, his voice calm but forceful, as if he was used to giving and receiving directions. He laid another mug on the tiny table in front of her. "Be cautious. It is hot. Seren nodded, taking a careful sip. The warmth crept into her palms and traveled across her chest, but the heat of the fire and the intensity of his presence did more than just warm her physically. It increased her pulse rate. Every glance at him, every little movement, caused her to feel a tension she couldn't understand. Alaric finally settled in across from her, leaning back in the chair with the casual stance of someone who is always in command. Seren noted as his gaze traveled around the room, noting things such as chair positions, a stack of law books on the desk, and a laptop that was closed but ready. His motions were marked by a crisp intelligence, as if he had cataloged everything before acting. "You're safe now," he eventually replied, his silver eyes catching the light from the fire. But it wasn't all about reassuring. There was authority, control, and an underlying guarantee that nothing would harm her in this cabin or outside of it while he was in charge. Seren felt little under his gaze as she mumbled, "I...thank you.” He bowed his head, his countenance unreadable. There was a slight furrow between his brows, which she couldn't place. Then, almost casually, he added, "I had plans to work tonight. Cases are pending. A deposition on Monday," he said, gesturing vaguely toward the desk, which was heaped with documents and a laptop. "Now it looks like I'll be burning the night here instead." Seren gave a blink. Is he... a lawyer? also made sense—his calm demeanor, the meticulous way he handled everything—but also brought a new dimension to the man before her. Not only intense and dangerous, but also disciplined, controlled, and analytical. "I didn't mean to ruin your plans," she explained, mortified. "You didn't," he said, his voice silky and commanding. "The storm completely destroyed them. It's unavoidable. His tone seemed professional, as if he were evaluating an issue. But, underneath the calm, she could detect something else—something primitive, untamed, and hardly repressed. There was a magnetic contrast. He could command a room like a lawyer, but there was an intensity seething beneath his calm façade, a presence she couldn't ignore. Her pulse raced with every small movement he made—the brush of his fingers against a mug, the way his stare stayed just a second longer. Minutes pass. Seren drank her tea, warming her hands and attempting to calm her mind. The storm was not the only thing raging.Being close Alaric made her heart race in ways she didn't understand. She found herself admiring the smallest details—the shape of his jaw, the way his eyes reflected the fire, the strength in his hands. "Do you always organize your workspace so meticulously?" she inquired, pointing to the stack of legal documents. He looked at her with a small smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth. "Yes, while I'm working. Chaos has no place in law or life when it can be avoided." His tone was calm and clinical. But the fire in his eyes was anything but. "And you?" "I try," she admitted, feeling slightly bashful. "When I decorate for occasions, I want everything to be perfect. However, I believe I am more flexible than you. He gave her a solemn look for a moment. His posture relaxed just subtly, just enough for her to notice. "I see," he finally stated. "Flexibility is… an asset, though not always appreciated." Seren offered a tiny smile. She knew that he notices everything. Not just the storm, not just her presence, but also her mood, her posture, and the faint trembling in her hands. She couldn't help but feel exposed and curiously drawn to him. The wind howled again, rattling the cottage walls and accumulating snow against the windows. Alaric stood up and proceeded to check on the storm outside, pulling back the curtain slightly. "It's worse than I thought," he mumbled. "You are not going anywhere tonight. Not secure. "You'll have to stay here.” Seren stood motionless. "Stay… the night?" "Yes," he simply said. There is no uncertainty or hesitation. This is a fact. "It's safer this way." Her heart raced. Being imprisoned with him, with the intensity he exuded—the combination of Alpha presence and disciplined lawyer calm—was nearly unbearable. Still, she nodded. There wasn't another option. "Okay," she said softly. "I'll… stay." He carefully and deliberately returned to his chair and watched her for an extended period of time. Although he lacked warmth and a grin, his quiet authority was reassuring. And behind that, she sensed a primitive tension, a power repressed but ever-present, like a coiled spring. Seren sipped her tea, letting the warmth penetrate into her fingers and chest. Outside, a blizzard raged. Inside, two strangers sat in forced proximity, each aware of the other in ways that words could not convey. Chemistry crackled, subtle and electrifying, bound by necessity—and something deeper she didn't quite comprehend. Seren breathed and hoped for the first time in hours, if not days. She had no idea what this Alpha lawyer meant for her life—or her emotions. But one thing was certain: nothing will be the same after tonight.
