4 The driveway at Nate’s was quiet when I drew onto it that evening. Beth’s Lexus sat to the side of the house, and I knew Sean’s Porsche, which Jem mostly used, would be in the garage, but neither Nate nor Ethan’s trucks had made it back yet—which had kind of been my plan: get Beth to agree to feed me before Nate could object. After parking up next to the Lexus, I headed around to the rear of the house, thankful for the ease up of rain since earlier. The way into the conservatory stood open, as did the French doors into the house, leaving rich, spicy scents to waft outward.
