Chapter Twenty: Panic & Uncertainty

390 Words
Scarlett had been feeling off for weeks—tired, nauseous, irritated at smells, and quick to get frustrated over the smallest things. But with finals looming, she ignored it, focusing on her studies… and Blake. Today, she’d come to cheer him on during one of his big games. She stood on the sidelines, heart thumping, clapping, cheering, eyes glued to him as he ran across the field. And Blake—he spotted her immediately, his grin widening, adrenaline surging as his team scored the winning point. But just as he jogged over to her after the game… Scarlett swayed. Then, she collapsed in his arms. Panic erupted. Blake’s teammates rushed to help, lifting her carefully, eyes wide with concern. “Call an ambulance!” Blake shouted, voice sharp with fear. “She’s fainted—get her to the hospital now!” At the hospital, Scarlett was whisked away for tests. Blake paced in the waiting room, heart pounding, hands clenching into fists. His teammates circled him, equally worried. “What do you think it is?” one of them asked nervously. “She has cancer,” another said grimly, shaking his head. “No… she just has a high fever or something,” the first countered. But the quiet one, looking at Blake with hesitant eyes, added, “Or… she could be pregnant.” Blake froze. “No… no way,” he muttered under his breath, panic rising in his chest. Minutes stretched into hours. Every passing second was unbearable. Blake ran his hands through his hair, pacing, muttering, heart hammering. His teammates tried to calm him, but even their reassurances couldn’t stop the fear gnawing at him. Finally, the doctor emerged, face neutral but kind. “Mr. Blake… Scarlett is stable,” she said. “She’s been very ill, and the symptoms are consistent with a serious condition—but we need more tests to be sure.” Blake let out a shaky breath, shoulders slumping. “She’s going to be okay, right?” he asked, voice almost breaking. The doctor gave a small, reassuring nod. “For now… yes. But we’ll need to monitor her closely.” Blake sank into a chair, gripping his head, staring down at the floor. “Scarlett…” he whispered, voice thick with emotion. “Whatever it is… I’ll be there. Always.”
