CHAPTER 4: THE WHISPERING GEARS

The leather-bound book felt heavy in Clara’s hands, its worn pages whispering secrets of time and fate. Elias lit a lantern, casting flickering shadows across the cluttered workshop. The ticking of clocks grew louder, as if the room itself was alive with anticipation. “Your father was close to unlocking a terrible truth,” Elias explained. “This watch isn’t just a timepiece. It’s a key — to something far older than either of us.” Clara traced the strange symbols etched into the watch’s back, feeling a chill. “What happens if the wrong people find it?” Elias’s eyes darkened. “Then time could unravel.” Suddenly, the door creaked open. A cold draft swept through the room, snuffing out the lantern. Clara’s heart jumped as a shadow flickered past the threshold. “Who’s there?” Elias demanded, stepping protectively in front of Clara. No answer came. Just the echoing tick-tock of countless clocks. The watch in Clara’s pocket vibrated faintly, as if alive. “We don’t have much time,” Elias said grimly. “You must leave now — and trust no one.” Clara nodded, steeling herself for the dangerous path ahead. The mystery of her father’s death, the secret of the watch, and the fate of time itself had become hers to bear. As she slipped out into the foggy London night, the backward ticking followed her steps — a haunting reminder that every second counted.
