CHAPTER 5: THE MAN IN THE FOG

305 Words
Clara moved swiftly through the twisting backstreets, her gloved fingers clenched tightly around the watch in her coat pocket. The chill of the night bit through her layers, but it wasn’t the cold that made her heart race — it was the feeling that someone was following her. She kept glancing over her shoulder. Shadows shifted. A figure darted behind a lamppost. Someone was there. Clara turned down a narrow lane, her boots splashing through puddles. Fleet Street was nearly empty at this hour, save for the occasional drunk stumbling home. She ducked into the covered entryway of an old apothecary and held her breath. Silence. Then, a whisper of movement. A man stepped into the street, his coat long and black, face hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat. He paused, scanning the alley with slow, deliberate movements. Clara pressed back against the doorframe, praying he wouldn’t see her. But he did. His head turned sharply, and his eyes—cold, silver, inhuman—met hers. Clara bolted. She sprinted into the street, dodging barrels and crates, the watch bouncing against her chest like a beating heart. Behind her, footsteps thundered in pursuit. She turned a sharp corner and collided with someone—someone solid. Strong arms caught her. “Clara?” Elias’s voice, urgent. “Come on!” He pulled her through a side door and slammed it shut. Inside, the building smelled of grease and metal. A hidden passage through one of the city’s old clock towers. “Who was that?” Clara gasped. “One of them,” Elias said darkly. “The Keepers of the Hour. They want the watch—and they’ll kill to get it.” Clara's hands trembled as the backward ticking continued. For the first time, she truly understood: This wasn’t just about her father. This was war.
