CHAPTER THREE

CHAPTER THREE Alex waited for 12.30 with a great desire. While he was burning with the desire of learning new things, he had a fear against the things he would probably hear. What could Adam tell him? Perhaps, he could foresee in which country there would be a revolution or the future price of the oil... To tell the truth, learning the winning lottary numbers wouldn’t hurt anybody... It would be good to win some money, to move to a bigger flat, to buy a new flat for his mother... Adam entered Alex’s room exactly at 12.30. After saying “Hello”, he immediately opened subject. “I hope you have achived to sleep for the last two days” he said and went on “I am asking this question because I have not achived to sleep for the last two nights. You must have understood that everything you have seen makes my sleep impossible.” “ I was going to ask that.” Alex said. “Why didn’t you do anything to prevent the disaster that you know beforehand.” “ The answer is simple. This is the subject of belief and the beginning and the end of this is related to the meaning of your life. If you think that you only exist on this earth during the time between your birth and death, death is the most tragic end for you. As you know there is life after death according to the religions. Christians and Moslems believe that the good will go to the heaven and the bad will go to the hell. Buddhists believe reincarnation. Judaism, although there is not a record about the life after death in Torah, is not poor in the subject of‘Gilgul Nesmot’, in other words the return of the souls, namely reincarnation. That’s why everybody, all people, somehow believe in a continuation, infinitiy...” said Adam. “Not everybody” said Alex “you have forgotten the atheists. They believe that our existance depends on us. Therefore, they are not interested in the life after death.” “This also a belief. There is also a theory, hypothesis and a way of thinking in it but it is a belief... I thought you were afraid of fanatics but now you are suprising me. Have you started to interrogating your beliefs?” “Perhaps yes, perhaps no.” said Alex. “What really disturbs me is not the subject of life after death more the question of why you didn’t do anything to change it although you had seen that it would happen beforehand.” “Doctor, the person who is sick is me. How can I say such things? To tell the truth, I told you what would happen and you did not do anything about this isue. This is your responsibility as well, as much as mine. “How? I didn’t believe you until I heard the disaster news.” “As you can see, doctor now you believe me. You tested me and you decided that I can foresee the future. Perhaps, you will demand a new information, you need another miracle to believe again. So, you will demand another catastrophe news or a revolution news and then what will happen? You will believe me more but to what extend? In fact, your thought that I do not do anything to foresee these disasters is the evidence for you to regard this situation as a game. There is a reason for my presence here and for our togetherness as everything in our life has a reason. In order to understand this reason, you have to take your head out of the sand and you have to look aroud with more careful eyes. You have to give up thinking that life is just an endless hustle and bustle. God has always tested the faith of believers. Otherwise, could six million people be killed in the Holocost? Could Jesus Christ know that he would be curicified and tell it to you? Everything has a reason but in order to find out this reason first you have to reveal the good things you have inside. This week I am going to give you a homework. Be together with your children more than before. Try to be closer to them because what will happen in the future cannot be known. I understand your suspicion and fright. Everybody will die one day. I do not mean that something bad will happen to your children...” Alex was much more confused at the end of the meeting than the beginning. “Am I the therapist or is the man directing me?” he asked himself. After adam left the room, he made an appointment with Doctor Koren for consultation on Adam’s file.
