YELENA FELL in love the first time she saw Ethan.
Back then, she was twenty-five years old, working as a personal assistant in a company. Before vampires revealed their nature twenty years ago, they also had jobs like ordinary humans, but Nobles and Purebloods would naturally stay on a higher position.
Their treatment was always better and they wouldn't be satisfied with living ordinary lives. Ethan and other Purebloods all had various positions through their lives, CEOs, royalty, army, presidents, advisors, government officials and such... Once they stayed for a while, they'd simply leave to some other place. They naturally had people all over the media to prevent their photos from being spread and people who deleted their information once they were done with one place.
Ethan, at the beginning of twenty first century, had such a job.
Yelena was just an ordinary human back then, and didn't think much when she began to work. But when their company got a new CEO and she saw Ethan for the first time, her heart that didn't love anyone for twenty-five years skipped a beat.
He was perfect, in every sense of that word. Yelena couldn't help but look forward to her days by his side, her mind couldn't help but think of various fantasies. Yet her happiness was short-lived as she died that night. While she was happily walking back home after her work looking towards tomorrow, someone attacked her from behind with a knife.
While she laid there in a pool of her own blood, her attacker didn't want to let go of her body and began to strip her. She doesn't recall much from that day except that she felt anger and seeing Ethan's faint sioulette. When she woke up next day she was told that she's now a vampire and Ethan explained her what would her future look like from now on.
As of her attacker... She killed him when she turned in that alley.
When she realized that her ideal boss was just like her now, she was more accepting of what she became and didn't panic. Spending her days working for Ethan and learning how to control her nature, those days were extremely precious to her. After meeting other half-bloods, she learned that she's most likely to become Ethan's Blood Partner — that alone made her thrilled with happiness.
But what happened?
Ethan didn't care much about her other that their work relationship. His older brother came, Yelena caught his eye and by the time she realized what was going on, she was already bound to him by a Blood Contract. Ethan didn't try to fight for her and sent her away with the other guy who didn't like her affection for Ethan.
Her days were Hell, but what could she do?
So she slowly went mad.
When Tristan got bored of her, he threw her aside — completely forgetting her existence. If not for the Blood Contract the two have and him being reluctant to throw away her abilities, she'd already be dead long ago.
So she had to hold onto some hope in order to not completely lose her mind.
In this case, that would be Ethan — but suddenly learning that he's been taken away, how could she still stay calm?
Mikhael didn't know that side of her past.
But even if he did, he still wouldn't show her mercy — what she's done is unforgivable.
"Flame," Ethan stepped out to stop him, but before he could reach him Tristan intercepted.
"Why are you in hurry, Sixth?" He didn't care about Yelena but if she could cause some trouble for Ethan, he'd gladly support her. Not to mention, Ethan seems to be quite concerned about this boy. What is so good about him?
Tristan wanted to know. He wanted to snatch Ethan's lover and f**k him in front of Ethan, to see his cold face show anger and despair and then snap Mikhael's neck, making Ethan look as the life left his body. To tell him; "Look, I can do this to your lover now and I'll always be able to do this to your things. Do you dare be so arrogant now? I'll keep taking your things away until you're groveling under my feet, beging for mercy!"
To break down his perfect façade and ruin him completely.
That's how much he hates Ethan. There's no apparent reason for his hate either. He was just jealous.
"Move," Ethan calmly said. He didn't have time to bother with this bastard.
"The two already agreed, didn't they?"
"They didn't—"
"I agree!" Ethan moved his gaze to Yelena who gulped, but seeing Ethan's concern for Mikhael only made her hate him more, "I will prove what this guy did, please let me fight him!"
Ethan didn't understand, what was she playing at? Does she really think he's blind? Unfortunately — her mind was, on the other hand, full of images of Mikhael dying.
She could kill him, she could kill him, she can kill him now and get away with it!
No matter how much Lord Ethan cared for him, could he still bother to love a corpse? Watching Ethan's eyes become colder and colder, she felt the need to get rid of Mikhael even more.
"This dangerous man shouldn't be allowed to live!"
"..."
"Flame, come here!" Ethan threw her one last look before turning to Mikhael. Mikhael chose to ignore him as he stepped towards Yelena again.
"Mikhael!"
Hearing his name from Ethan's lips made him pause for a moment as he turned around. His previously clouded eyes with rage showed clarity for that single moment as he mouthed something to Ethan before smiling. Then he turned around with previous murderous glare.
"Stop this nonsense, you two cannot..." Dominique tried to speak up as well. No matter how good Mikhael was, could he really beat a half-blood? Dominique didn't think so. Looking at Amelia and the girl in her arms, his heart softened, and even though he wanted to see Mikhael beat that woman, he didn't want to endanger his life.
"I think that this is the best solution for now," the First Pureblood spoke up, "I am also curious as to what ability this vampire has to speak as if he knows me."
"This isn't the time for this, Mikhael is my friend. I'm telling you that there's no way he made this mess!" Dominique's fangs elongated. He didn't fear this elder brother of his.
"And Yelena is our brother's wife. I do wonder why you trust a stranger over our family."
"Constantine, are you seriously going to insist on this matter?"
The later party took off his gloves before showing off his own fangs.
"So what if I do, Dominique? In the first place, how could a lowly vampire be worthy of being a Pureblood's partner? Just take a look at Ethanasios, he wants to kill a brother for that man!"
Constantine openly showed his disgust with Mikhael. Not only did that little vampire dare to be with a Pureblood despite his lowly bloodline, he even dared to directly feed off him? He's completely throwing away their face!
Leonard stood behind Dominique as the guy who came with Constantine also took the similar position behind his own partner.
"It's been a while, Samuel," he greeted.
"Indeed it has," the two didn't refer to meeting at all. The First and Second often fought and the two would naturally fight along them. They have completely different views on life which is why they're never able to agree on anything. And it's Samuel and Leonard that always end up clearing their mess.
"This has nothing to do with Mikhael, you already know what kind of a person Tristan is. Ethanasios has been silent for two millenniums, it was about time to stand up and teach him his place," Dominique was sure that today's fight would be inevitable.
He was with Mikhael for around three centuries, the amount of times the two fought together was too much to be counted so he's well aware of his abilities. But half-bloods are different, just like Purebloods — they could use their blood to suppress weaker vampires completely. Their healing abilities were also better than other vampires, not to mention that half-bloods usually had few familiars.
They aren't your usual prey Mikhael hunted.
"Big deal, it's not like he brought an actual harm to Sixth," Constantine sneered before turning to Ethan, "Ethanasios, do you know what you did wrong?"
Ethan only turned to him with cold eyes.
"What's that got to do with you? I'll be with whoever I want to be. We might be siblings because of our powers, but we aren't related in any way. Since when did we start looking at each other's business?"
"..."
Dominique was tongue-tied while Constantine emitted dangerous gleam. True, Purebloods, although working together and not wanting to let any of them die were actually often fighting among themselves. There are no familial ties between them, they only worked together because of profits. Even though some were created later, they aren't necessarily weaker than the one before them. In fact, they all had almost the same amount of power, which is why half-bloods by their side became deciding factor as of to who is stronger.
In this case, Samuel by Constantine's side was the only half-blood of the seven that reached the six-century mark of age, while the two by Tristan's side didn't even live for two centuries. It's known that with every Deep Slumber a half-blood goes through, their battle prowess will grow exponentially.
"Are you honestly going to defy me because of that man?"
"Are you honestly going to meddle in my business? Did you already forget that it's because your bothersome interfering with Seventh that he chose to run aw—"
"SHUT UP!"
Even Mikhael turned to see what's going on. He seems to have heard another big secret about this family.
"Truth hurts, doesn't it?" Ethan didn't want to bother with this guy.
"Now, now, let's all calm down. We didn't gather here to fight," even though he said so, Sebastian still stood next to Constantine, "But regarding that girl... She's about to change. Whatever will we do?"
"If you try to touch her, then you can get a free ticket to Hell from me," Amelia sneered as she moved Cera to hold her with one hand and used the other one to take out her gun. Even though her action might cause trouble for Hunters HQ, so what?
"Unfortunately, I do not agree with Tristan," Diana, a loyal bro-con stood with Dominique and Ethan, but she still glanced oddly at Cera.
"Amelia, take Cera and Mikhael, then leave once the fight begins," Dominique told her, "we'll keep them busy."
Amelia only shook her head. Mikhael was already in front Yelena now, even if she wanted to stop him, she'll be unable to do so.
"It's fine, don't worry about Mikhael," she let out a defeated sigh, "Let's just hope he won't go overboard."
"How certain are you that he'll be fine?" Ethan appeared next to her and asked, his eyes carefully watched Cera and Mikhael. It will take another hour or so before she turned — it's not like Ethan wasn't attached to this little niece of his after all this time he spent with her. It's common knowledge that children turned into vampires couldn't control themselves, but he knew that Cera was really well behaved and there was also Mikhael...
Even thought he mouthed earlier that he'll be fine, Ethan still worried for him. That little i***t's skills — failure of skills — Ethan has seen with his own two eyes.
Other than having an urge to attack from time to time, Cera should be able to control her nature well. He didn't want to see her die.
"You see... Mikhael seems to be pretty serious this time. There was only one time when he was serious and the results were... Too much for me to measure his battle prowess."
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
"Mikhael... No, you should already know that among Twenty Esteemed Seats, the first seven are made of immortal humans whose power is on pair with Purebloods, while the later are people with strength equal to that of a higher Noble."
Ethan nodded. It's why vampires and hunters could never get rid of each other completely.
"Then our leader should be just as strong as the Vampire King," she paused, "But the truth is, even though we have seven immortals among the Esteemed Seats, our First Seat is not one. Instead, he is a half-blood."
Even Dominique and Constantine paused as they turned to look at her, where did another half-blood come from now? Why didn't they know this?
"But, our First Seat's situation was somewhat special. Truth to be told, he was once our target and the way he got into that position was rather weird. He was beaten senseless by the original First Seat, then the First Seat made him take over his position."
Her gaze was somewhat unnatural as she eyed Mikhael.
"Our original First Seat was extremely powerful, you see. When the current guy was still free to roam outside, he's done some really despicable things, including turning children into vampires and making them work for him. He was drunk on power since he was a half-blood and knew that there won't be many people that could possibly stop him, so he did as he pleased. Since he was so dangerous, Hunters HQ chose to send someone to deal with him, that someone being the First Seat and me, who only then came to rise to the position of Second Seat — as part of my training."
She'd never forget what happened at that time. Mikhael always lazed around even when doing the most dangerous missions and didn't use his full power — not to mention that he was always smiling with an easygoing face. Amelia often joked with him or chased him with her guns when he provoked her, but she never saw him turn angry before.
In fact, missions with Mikhael were so ridiculous sometimes — he's extremely lucky! One time he happened to angrily kick a random pebble on the road, but that pebble hit the wall, changed trajectory around fifty times before hitting a random person half a mile away, knocking him out. When they came to that person, they realized... That the person was actually their target for the mission.
He always had escort around him and vampires to protect him, but this time he chose to go out in a corner to... Take a piss alone! Yes, and then the pebble Mikhael kicked knocked him out.
Indeed, it was that ridiculous — and there are many situations like that too.
So Amelia who only knew of this side to Mikhael, when seeing him turn serious for the first time in her life was so terrified that she didn't dare to go next to him for entire year — using all kinds of excuses to avoid him.
"Back then, the two of us were the main force, but the other five seats came along for support — since it was our first time dealing with a half-blood. We weren't sure how powerful he is, but once the First Seat learned of his deeds he was so angry that he took on that guy alone."
Mikhael didn't even fight with that guy. He toyed with him on spot for weeks, seemingly never getting tired.
"It was terrible, the half-blood couldn't make a single move before the First Seat. Bit by bit, the First Seat would cut few slices off his flesh again and again. When he was about to drop dead — he'd feed him his blood, his blood suppression was completely useless, even his familiar was skinned alive. Up to this day, when that guy sees the previous First Seat, he still trembles in fear and avoids him as much as possible."
But more that that, it's not the most terrifying part of Mikhael's strength.
"Us six almost died trying to stop him. We even had to call the boss to help us stop the First's madness," she let out a long sigh, "In the end, we did manage to stop him — but at the cost of three Seats falling into comatose state for months and boss losing two of his limbs. The First Seat was still not defeated, but got bored of dealing with the other guy and us."
He didn't differentiate between friends and enemies. He just cut whatever was in the way of his prey.
"In the end, we took in the half-blood as one of us and the previous First Seat gave up his position."
She looked at Ethan.
"Not because he became weaker, nor because of pressure from other Seats. It wasn't even because he died or because someone stronger appeared."
Ethan felt like he could understand what she was implying.
"But because he found his position to be a bother. Because he was too lazy to deal with official work," First Seat had to deal with government and Purebloods too, along with other business for Hunters HQ. Mikhael couldn't sleep much because of that annoying pile of work, so he just threw his position to the newcomer.
Although he didn't bother with that half-blood anymore, the later avoided him like virus.
"And that person later fell to the position of Twentieth Seat, which didn't have to do much other than accept missions from time to time."
Ethan frowned as he turned to Mikhael. It's good that he heard that Mikhael could defend himself, but...
How could he avoid power of suppression as a vampire?
"Yes, that guy is Mikhael. If he could harm an existence of someone on a level as our boss, then this woman stands no chance against him. It would be for the best to not get involved with him right now, because..."
She watched as that woman lunged at Mikhael, her mind full of urge to kill him to hear anything Amelia just said.
"...you might be the first he'll cut down."
Mikhael only gently smiled as he gripped that white blade, a single red line spread from the centre of the blade, going down the entire length of it. If one looked better, from the blood flowing from the cut that appeared on his hand as he gripped that handle, they'd notice that it was it which made that odd straight line.
Then, with a casual movement, he avoided her with ease. It didn't seem like he's done much, but she became unable to move before letting out a blood-curling scream. Ethan and other Purebloods who could see what he did couldn't help but feel a shiver run their spines, Mikhael finally turned to look at her before rising his other hand.
"Ah, sorry. It's been a while since I last held blade," he apologized as he opened his hand, and in there lied something that looked like a bloody mess of threads, "I wanted to cut only your nerves, but who'd know that I accidently pulled out few veins instead."
His smile was extremely terrifying at that moment. It didn't look gentle at all, it was more like a person who accidentally pushed someone then apologized, but his lips didn't quite reach his eyes. His gaze was that of a person looking down on an ant, his smile that of amicable elder. Together, they made him look like a psychopath.
"His left gun was meant for killing vampires, his right for humans. Then... If put together, what are they meant to hunt?" Mikhael wouldn't attack unless you crossed his bottom line.
As to what that bottom line was, only those who managed to provoke him knew.
Ethan couldn't pull his eyes off Mikhael.
'Wrong.
This is wrong.'
The voice deep inside his head spoke, it held so much grief and pain that Ethan's heart ached as well.
'He shouldn't be like this.'
He watched as Mikhael moved once again, this time pulling out bone from her leg.
"Half-bloods are good at regeneration, but you see, it's only possible if something is damaged. But if you only harm ligaments and keep the bone between intact, it won't regrow... Such as this, only the ligaments would heal." He threw the bone on the ground before stepping on it. As if on cue, Yelena began to scream clutching her leg.
's**t! What is this!?'
"But if your bone is to regrow onto already repaired ligaments... What do you think would happened when you add a bone that doesn't fit onto complete skeleton?"
'He shouldn't stain his hands with blood.'
"Let's see, you have over two hundred bones in you body. What would happen if I'm to pull out each one of them and then make them regrow wrongly? Do you think you'll be able to fix that in your entire life?"
'He shouldn't be tainted with darkness.'
"What is wrong? Can't you stand? The other guy was fine even as I cut open his skull and teeth one by one. He didn't even let a squeak, not to mention scream nor beg for mercy."
He moved his blade once again, pulling out more of her veins.
"Should I go from your leg or go back to your hand? Which do you prefer? You'll get used to pain eventually, so chose which should be faster to get used to..."
'He should stay in light.'
"Are you worried that two hundred bones are too little?"
Even Constantine, who's seen his fair share of cruelty couldn't stand this sight.
"It's fine, you have a fair number of tendons in your muscles," he cut again.
'Take him away...'
"If I'm careful enough, they should last us for a while..."
'...from the darkness.'
"Or I can just cut again what grew back?" And again.
'Take him back to the light!'
"There should be a fair amount of veins too..." And again.
'Hurry!'
"Or skin... How many times could I cut your skin inch by inch before it's unable to grow back?" And again.
'Stop him!'
Ethan found his legs moving on his own towards Mikhael.
"Starve you in the sun?" The floor around them became completely stained with blood, but not a single drop fell on Mikhael.
'If you don't...'
"Pull your lungs out?" Only Cera's blood from earlier stained his clothes, but because he wore black, it wasn't noticeable at all. Only the yellow shirt had some stains, but because of the picture on it — it almost seemed like it was meant to be there.
'If he falls completely...'
"Or your nails?" He followed with action every suggestion he made.
'If he becomes tainted with darkness...'
"Stab your eyes?" But Yelena regenerated again and again despite her injuries.
'You'll lose him again.'
"Pull your heart out?" His smile grew larger with every swing of his sword as Yelena's screams became fainter. The more it hurt, the less strength she had to continue.
'He won't be able to endure the emptiness.'
"Mikhael!" Grabbing his hand that was about to swing down the blade with one hand and covering his eyes with the other one, Ethan forgot everything about Amelia's warning as he held him back.
'Don't make the same mistake again!'
He could only hear the frantic urging voice in his head. That kind of panic was something Ethan felt for the first time in his life, but he oddly felt familiar with it.
"It's fine, Mikhael," he slowly lowered his hand and made him drop the blade, "You don't have to do this."
His actions gentle and natural like he's done it many times before. Carefully, he held Mikhael without uncovering his eyes, his hands so gentle like holding a silk tread, worried that he'll break it if he exerts the tiniest bit of force.
"It's alright," he continued to coo him, Mikhael oddly didn't resist, "She got what she deserved. I'll continue from now on, so let go..."
'...of that hatred...'
"Calm down..."
'...and return to the light you belong.'
"...my little Flame."
'...My Beloved.'
