It had been just a few weeks since they had broken up. She had been the one that broke up with him, saying stuff about how she just wanted time to herself and didn’t want the distraction of a relationship, but here she was, already hooking up with another guy.
“Xander… Why… What are you doing here?” Jasmine quickly scooted away from the guy she was with as she heard the condoms fall and saw Xander was the one. “This isn’t… Wait… this isn’t what you think it is. James and I are just…” Jasmine stammered, embarrassed by what was happening.
The guy that was next to her, James, let go of her, looked at the condoms that had fallen to the floor, stood up, and burst into laughter.
“Matt is really brutal,” he laughed. “I asked him to get me some rubber, I never would have thought he would send you to bring it. What a jerk,” he laughed even harder.
James came from a rich family too. He wasn’t as rich as Matt, but he was wealthy enough to afford to buy new mustangs every semester.
Xander balled up his fingers into a fist as James spoke. Matt had set him up. He felt so stupid for not seeing it coming. He should have known that the moment he broke up with Jasmine, Matt was going to do something nasty to mess with him.
“Jas, I know… I know you didn’t like that I was broke, but you don’t have to be with this kind of person. You know James sleeps around with everyone, right? He… He is probably seeing someone else right now too,” Xander blurted out in anger.
“Who do you think you are?” Jasmine sent a slap across his face in anger. “You have absolutely no right to talk to me, okay? I broke up with you. Whomever I want to be with is none of your business.”
“James can buy me anything and everything I want. You could never get me anything when we were together, he can do all of that.”
“But… But you said you didn’t want to spend unnecessarily and…”
“Shut up!” Jasmine yelled, cutting him off. “Just get out of my face!”
“Aww, come on girl,” James chuckled and grabbed her hand. “Don’t get mad and ruin our night,” he said, pulling her closer.
“I just… I just hate seeing his face sometimes,” Jasmine pouted.
“You can ignore him baby girl,” James smiled naughtily. “Besides, you could let him stay and watch. He could learn a thing or two.”
Jasmine blushed for a moment, hearing what he said, but she shook her head.
“I’m really not in the mood for this anymore James. Seeing him just ruined my mood,” she said and picked up her purse. “I will make it up to you next time,” she said and kissed him before breaking out of his hold and leaving.
James watched her for a while till she was out of sight, then he turned to look and Xander, frozen in shock. He just shook his head and walked off, stuffing the condoms in his pocket.
Xander was so lost in his thought he didn’t realize when he left the grove. The only thing he could remember was him thinking about how life was all about money.
As he returned to the dorm room with Blondie's drinks, he snapped right back to himself, hearing the laughter of Matt and his boys as he walked into their room.
“Yo X Boy, what did you see just now?” Blondie asked, laughing hard.
“You know what he saw Blondie, no need to make him remember,” Matt said with fake sympathy. “Or did James already finish ravaging Jasmine before you got there?” he burst into another round of laughter and the other guys joined him.
Xander’s fingers balled up into a fist as the anger in him began boiling. He wanted to kill Matt there and then, but he knew Matt was stronger than him.
“Why? Why do you have to treat me like this?” Xander bawled.
Matt laughed even louder. “Look, the broke man is mad. I’m so scared!” he mocked, the other guys in the room laughing too. After a few seconds, he walked up to Xander, calm and collected, and placed a hand on his shoulder.
“You want to know why I treat you this way? I'll tell you the reason. You are poor. In the entire school, I despise you the most,” Matt spoke without reserve. “Let’s be real, you never deserved a great lady like Jasmine. She was just too good for you, so… I say it’s only right for my friend to have her for a few days.”
“It took you what? An entire year to make her yours, well, guess what, James… he had her wrapped around his fingers in just an hour of chatting with her.”
Xander looked around as Matt made fun of him, and all he could see were the faces of everyone laughing at him. It made him so mad he lost control.
“I’m gonna kill you!” Xander yelled and pounced on Matt, trying to punch him in the face, but before he could do anything, Matt’s friends were all over him.
They grabbed him and dragged him away to his dorm, tossing him on the floor in front of his room. He wanted to rush back to Matt’s room but his roommates ran out of the room and pulled him back inside to try to calm him down.
Later that night, lying on the bed, Xander covered himself with his blanket and sobbed sadly.
"Why do they all bully me and trample on my dignity?"
"Is it just because I am poor? They don’t even consider me a human being!"
He felt nothing but anger in his heart, so much anger that he didn’t realize when he began pulling at his hair fiercely. He was mad at Matt for setting him up, but he didn’t know if he should be more mad at Jasmine for what she did too.
