I went downstairs and had a couple of drinks out on the terrace, where I could indulge in some girl watching. Then I wandered inside and played a slot machine a few times. There wasn’t much action in the gambling rooms yet, but I went in and tried the dice. A girl showed up with a drink on the house. I won about two hundred dollars in ten minutes and quit, tossing the girl a ten-dollar chip. Back at the desk I inquired about renting a car. Not just a car, a Cadillac. The clerk made a phone call, and twenty minutes later the car was outside. I signed for it. I got in and took a ride out into the country—no particular reason, but I wanted to kill some time and I wanted to seem busy.
