Chapter 7: Teeth Behind Smiles

697 Words
The sun dipped below Blackwood Hollow's uneven treetops as Caleb traversed a twisting forest path. The bandages under his shirt itched with each step, sticking to the scarring still healing along his ribs. Whatever had cut him in that dreamlike fight — it had cut him here, too. He had no destination in mind. Only that something had called him to the forest since morning. Not the system, though. Not at all this time, at least not outright. This was older. More ancient. Birdsong fell silent the deeper he strode into the woods, fading away to the soft rustle of the undergrowth and the muffled snap of twigs. His breath fogged in the cool darkness. A clearing opened ahead. There were people—perhaps a dozen—scattered casually throughout the clearing of the glade. None of them seemed surprised that he was there. Some leaned against the trees, others squatted, sitting as though they were born from the ground itself. Their eyes shone dimly even in the fading light. A woman stepped forward. She was angular and lean and tall. Her braid fell down her back like a black rope, and her eyes struck his face with a sharp stare. "You're the outsider," she said. "Kael's mistake." Caleb didn't blink. "Not a mistake I signed up for." “Doesn’t matter,” she answered flatly. “You carry the mark.” He tensed. Not externally. But internally, a tension was growing — the kind to which he had grown accustomed. The system was active again, reacting to the proximity of others similar to him. Or unlike him. Keep it down, he instructed himself, instinctively suppressing the power that seethed beneath his skin. Whatever was within him, it was not to be observed now. Another man stepped out of the shadows — younger, thinner. "He looked calm. Could be one of us." The woman snorted. "He hasn't even shifted. He's a liability." "I'm not here to join your pack," Caleb responded, locking eyes with her. "No," she replied. "You came because the bite dragged you into something you don't know." Silence cut through the air. None of them said a word, simply watching. Caleb could sense it—their suspicion, their judgment. They did not consider him one of them. Another man approached, older, broader, with streaks of gray in his beard. The others quieted at his presence. The elder, clearly. "You possess something that is not of us," the old man said quietly, in a voice that commanded attention. "You are not a wolf. Not yet. Maybe never." Caleb didn't budge. "I didn't sign up for this. But I'm not going to back down either." The old man studied him, slow and deliberate. Then, after a tense silence, he nodded. "Then watch. Stay out of our way. Don't attract trouble on our heads. If you lose control—" "You'll kill me?" Caleb asked. The old man smiled grimly. “We won't have to. The forest has its own laws.” The group began to break up into the trees, one by one. The woman with the braid remained behind, her expression unreadable. "Don't imagine that Kael’s protection will save you," she stated, and then she turned and disappeared into the woods. Caleb exhaled slowly, once again alone in the clearing. They don't trust me. But they're not really sure what I am, either. His fists clenched at his sides. Deep inside, the familiar flicker pulsed — the system was still active, though silent. He could feel its pressure humming just beneath the surface of his skin. [Internal Log – Updated] New location marked. Status: Unaffiliated. Observation phase active. Next threshold: ??? (Condition: Combat experience required.) He stood looking at the trees for a long time, then turned and departed. But as he made his first step, there was an odd heat that washed over his forearm. He pulled back his sleeve. A pale mark — not a scar, not a tattoo — glowed briefly under the surface of his skin. A half-circle. Like a crescent moon. And then it faded. Not part of the system. But something else. And whatever it was… it had just activated.
