Caleb didn't leave his cabin for two days.
The agony wasn't the worst of it—he could tolerate the bruised ribs, the busted knuckles, the throbbing under his fingernails. What was left was the Silence within his head after the trial by system. No prompts. No numbers. Just silence, like the eye of a storm.
He stared at his reflection in a shattered fragment of a mirror. His eyes were darker now. Not just in color, but in depth. Something had changed behind them. And he didn't know how to regain it.
He had not informed anyone yet.
Not about the beasts. Not concerning the system. Not even about the claw marks still scarring across his chest.
He didn't take off his shirt. He kept his head down.
But the bloodlust kept on ticking.
[Warning: Bloodlust at 90%]
Recommended Action: Reduce through controlled combat, essence regulation, or moon suppression meditation.
Failure to regulate may result in uncontrollable transformation.
"I know," Caleb growled. "I can feel it."
His temper had been slipping. Little things caused him to twitch. The snap of bones in the fire, the way someone gazed too long, the scent of fear he could now suddenly sense around other people—especially strangers.
Even Aela had noticed.
"Are you okay?" she asked when she discovered him at the edge of town, arms folded, posture stiff.
He nodded at her quickly. “Just tired.”
"Your hands are shaking."
He shoved them all into his pockets.
She didn't push the issue further. She sat down next to him under the tree, shoulders nearly touching each other. The silence was not tense—it was calming. The turmoil in his blood slowed for a moment.
But it didn't last.
Later that evening, Caleb walked deeper into the forest. Away from Blackwood Hollow. Away from Aela. Away from the things he might accidentally destroy.
He needed to let it go.
The shadows followed him. Every branch, every root, became more defined, more vibrant. He was more sensitive. He felt the animals' breath hiding in their dens, the heartbeat of a fox thirty paces to his left, the tension in the earth.

"Alright," he whispered, removing his shirt and tossing it aside.
The night buzzed around him, the moon like an eye watching through the trees.
[Lunar Instinct Override: Trigger Available]
Would you like to enter Controlled Release Mode?
Yes/No
He hesitated. Then said out loud: “Yes.”
[Initiating Controlled Release: Partial Shift Engaged.]
Pain coursed through his body.
His fingernails turned dark. His teeth grew longer. Eyes went wild. He was not hairy, but his muscles were wound up with superhuman strength. The world became sharper—deadly sharp.
He roared. Not fully man. Not fully beast.
And the forest responded.
A rogue wolf—larger than normal, streaked with dirt and wild eyes—ran out from the forest. It did not pause. Instinct trumped reason.
Caleb faced it head-on.
They clashed like thunder. Claws scraped. Blood splattered. The wolf nipped him in the arm, but Caleb didn't cry out—he spun around, grabbed it by the neck, and slammed it to the ground.
[Essence Absorbed: +14 LP]
Partial Instinct Stabilized.
Bloodlust: Reduced to 81%
His breathing slowed.
His body was filled with renewed strength—but under restraint.
[Skill Level: Lunar Foresight-Level 2]
Foresight window increased to 2 seconds. Cooldown reduced to 25 seconds.
He didn’t know if the wolf was part of a random encounter…. Or something the system had drawn to him.
However, he benefitted from the kill.
And the system… it was learning.
He returned to the outskirts of town under the moonlight, shirtless, battered, but lighter than before. He bathed in the stream, grabbed a jacket, and leaned against a cold tree.
Aela's scent reached him first before her voice. Pine and wind.
"You're bleeding," she said, appearing at his side.
“Nothing serious.”
She narrowed her eyes. "You don’t talk about anything serious."
Caleb looked at her. Really looked. The wind tossed her hair behind her. Her voice—soft but never fragile.
"I'm trying to keep people safe," he said.
"From what?"
“From me.”
They looked at each other. She remained silent for a while. Then, gently, she touched the edge of a healing cut on his forearm.
"Don’t push me away just because you're scared of what you're turning into."
He didn’t have a response.
Only the system itself whispered.
[Stable. No immediate threat detected.]
But that did not bring peace.
Just the smallest gasp before something more sinister occurs.
